    Abstract
Considerable portion of energy losses in a vehicle traced to tire. Energy losses in a tire are due to tire longitudinal slip as well as rolling resistance. Hence, both of aforementioned factors must take into the consideration to study the tire energy loss. Present paper aims to investigate the power losses in tires and to examine influence of road conditions and tire inflation pressure on them. To cover the real-world conditions, experiments were done on a gasoline-fueled passenger vehicle on an urban highway along two routes with same length and opposite gradients to comprise the change of road conditions. Then, by use of engine performance model which is prepared in dynamometer...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Aram, Mohammad Hassan (Author) ; Khorasani, Sina (Supervisor)
    Abstract
One of the attractive fields of applied quantum mechanics in recent two-three decades is the field of quantum computing. Up to now different substrates have been proposed for a quantum computer. One of them is cavity quantum electrodynamics in which some quantum systems with finite energy states like atoms interact with quantized Bosonic modes like photons inside a cavity. In this dissertation we study a particular structure in this substrate. This structure consists of some quantum dots inside coupled cavities. Since we would like to build these cavities in a photonic crystal slab, we first introduce two new methods for analysis of this type of crystals. These methods are much faster than...

    Abstract
Lead-acid battery is a storage technology that is widely used in photovoltaic (PV) systems. Battery charging and discharging profiles have a direct impact on the battery degradation and battery loss of life. This study presents a new 2-model iterative approach for explicit modelling of battery degradation in the optimal operation of PV systems. The proposed approach consists of two models: namely, economic model and degradation model which are solved iteratively to reach the optimal solution. The economic model is a linear programming optimisation problem that calculates the optimal hourly battery use profile based on an assumed value of the battery degradation cost. The degradation model,...

    Abstract
Stress sensitivity is a phenomenon that affects reservoir rock properties, such as permeability and therefore changes the well pressure transient behavior. This paper aims to study these behaviors in stress sensitive reservoirs and evaluate the pressure loss in such reservoirs during the process of hydrocarbon production. A power model is used to correlate the changes in permeability with pore pressure. A novel semi-implicit three-dimensional finite element method has been employed to numerically solve the flow problem. The numerical results have been validated by analytical results obtained in a non-sensitive reservoir. Pressure drawdown test for different scenarios has been studied. The...

    2013
    Abstract
In this study, the aeroelastic stability and response of an aircraft swept composite wing in subsonic compressible flow are investigated. The composite wing was modeled as an anisotropic thin-walled composite beam with the circumferentially asymmetric stiffness structural configuration to establish proper coupling between bending and torsion. Also, the structural model consists of a number of nonclassical effects, such as transverse shear, material anisotropy, warping inhibition, nonuniform torsional model, and rotary inertia. The finite state form of the unsteady aerodynamic loads have been modeled based on the indicial aerodynamic theory and strip theory in the subsonic compressible flow....

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Naqavi, Ali (Author) ; Mehrany, Khashayar (Supervisor) ; Khorasani, Sina (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Different methods of shifting and shaping of space-time electromagnetic pulses are in this work investigated by nonlinearity and/or dispersion. Developing two dimensional (2D) finite difference time domain (FDTD) codes in the nonlinear regime and taking the optical dispersion of ideal metals into account, nanophotonic and plasmonic structures are analyzed in this thesis.
Goos-Hänchen shift, superprism effect, and optical bistability are particularly emphasized. A heuristic approximation is presented to extract the Goos-Hänchen shift at the interface of 1D and 2D photonic crystals. The superprism effect for electric polarization – where the electric field vector is perpendicular to the 2D...

    Abstract
Computational instruments such as personal computers (PC) are among the most important and developed inventions needed for the society. Nowadays, the fastest classical computing machines are based on the conventional semiconductor fabrication technology. But these computers cannot satisfy all of the requirements of today’s ongoing developments. Two important weaknesses of the undergoing technology are the speed of computing which is in the frontend of the semiconductor technology, and solving some complicated problems which may take years and even decades with these computers. This is while, based on quantum theory and related algorithms, solving of these problems would take much less time....

Nonlinear free vibrations of thin-walled beams in torsion

    , Article Acta Mechanica ; Volume 223, Issue 10 , 2012 , Pages 2135-2151 ; 00015970 (ISSN) Sina, S. A ; Haddadpour, H ; Navazi, H. M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
Nonlinear torsional vibrations of thin-walled beams exhibiting primary and secondary warpings are investigated. The coupled nonlinear torsional-axial equations of motion are considered. Ignoring the axial inertia term leads to a differential equation of motion in terms of angle of twist. Two sets of torsional boundary conditions, that is, clamped-clamped and clamped-free boundary conditions are considered. The governing partial differential equation of motion is discretized and transformed into a set of ordinary differential equations of motion using Galerkin's method. Then, the method of multiple scales is used to solve the time domain equations and derive the equations governing the...

    , Article Materials and Design ; Volume 30, Issue 3 , 2009 , Pages 741-747 ; 02641275 (ISSN) Sina, S. A ; Navazi, H. M ; Haddadpour, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
A new beam theory different from the traditional first-order shear deformation beam theory is used to analyze free vibration of functionally graded beams. The beam properties are assumed to be varied through the thickness following a simple power law distribution in terms of volume fraction of material constituents. It is assumed that the lateral normal stress of the beam is zero and the governing equations of motion are derived using Hamilton's principle. Resulting system of ordinary differential equations of free vibration analysis is solved using an analytical method. Different boundary conditions are considered and comparisons are made among different beam theories. Also, the effects of...

    Abstract
Open-pore titanium scaffolds were fabricated by sintering of compressed mixtures of TiH1.924 and urea. Spherical and irregular shaped space holders were used to investigate the effect of pore shape on cellular behavior. After removal of the space holder, the shape of the spacers was replicated to the pores. Average diameter of the pores was in the range of 300-600 lm. SEM images showed that titanium hydride resulted in higher surface roughness and larger micro porosities than pure titanium. In vitro evaluationswere carried out by using MTT assay, measuring alkaline phosphatase activity and alizarin red staining in flow perfusion bioreactor for cell culture. Observations revealed excellent...

    Abstract
Conventional lateral resisting systems can provide sufficient strength and ductility for design based earthquakes, although the considerable residual deformation remaining in the plasticized regions undermines the resiliency of the structures. In order to resolve this problem, various self-centering systems have been proposed and tested in recent years, most of which are specified for new buildings and are not simply suitable for retrofitting applications. Moreover, the available self-centering systems are costly and complex to assemble, which can be considered as a serious barrier for practical application. To address these drawbacks, an innovative Core-Less Self-Centering (CLSC) brace is...

    Two-dimesional Bipolar Junction Transistors

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Gharekhanlou, Behnaz (Author) ; Khorasani, Sina (Supervisor) ; Sarvari, Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis, we present for the first time a unified and extensive theory of two-dimensional bipolar junction transistors fabricated on mono-layer materials. Unlike their bulk counterparts which are described by the conventional theory of bulk junctions, the proposed class of structures behaves here significantly different and needs an entirely different theory. This has been based on the theory of planar p-n rectifying junction diodes developed in an earlier study of ours, where we had investigated a basic p-n junction model with abrupt doping profile. The accuracy of theory is limited to the applicability of drift-diffusion model with depletion-layer approximation, while disregarding...

    Abstract
An enhanced media access control (MAC) layer protocol that uses the signaling method benefits of the physical layer in order to provide different levels of quality to different users in optical code-division multiple-access (OCDMA) packet networks is presented. In the proposed network architecture the users are categorized into two classes of service, one having a higher quality level and the other having a lower quality level. Users of each class transmit at the same power level and different from the other classes’ users. Also, the MAC of each user estimates the amount of interference on the channel and adjusts the packet transmission’s time to improve network performance. Through...

The structural model considered here, incorporates a number of non-classical effects such as primary and secondary warping, non-uniform torsional model, rotary inertia and pretwist angle. Ignoring the axial inertia term leads to differential equation of motion in terms of angle of twist in the case of axially immovable beam ends. The governing differential equations of motion are derived using Hamilton's principle and the reduced model around the static equilibrium position is obtained using 2-mode Galerkin discretization...

Compensator Design to Prevent Pilot_Induced Oscillations in Aircrafts

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Eskandari Naddaf, Neda (Author) ; Malaek, Mohammad Bagher (Supervisor) ; Khayyat, Amir Ali Akbar (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Pilot-Induced Oscillations is an unwanted, inadvertent phenomenon which has the ability to damage the aircraft completely. This thesis suggests a novel control method that can damp PIO after predicting its occurrence. The specific point of this control algorithm is that it contains a preprocessor that will not let the controller become activated unless in the case of probable PIOs, so pilot forces will not be disturbed in normal flight situations. Besides, with regard to the tendency of pilot towards establishing PIO, this control algorithm decides on pilot and controller shares in the loop. This research focuses on those groups of phenomena which take place as a result of a sudden...

The results are expected to offer better predictions of the vibrational behaviour of these kinds of structures in general, and in the design of rotor blades of turbo machinery, in...

Stress-sensitivity Study in Fractured Reservoirs Using the Discrete Fracture Model and the Finite Element Method

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Moradi, Mostafa (Author) ; Taghizadeh Manzari, Mehrdad (Supervisor) ; Daneh Dezfuli, Alireza (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
Hydrocarbon recovery projects involve large capital investments and have a very high risk associated with them. To minimize this risk, accurate predictions of reservoir performance must be acquired. Reservoir simulation is a powerful tool for fulfilling this requirement. Physics, mathematics, reservoir engineering and computer programming are combined in reservoir simulation in order to predict reservoir performance under different situations both accurately and efficiently. Performance prediction in fractured reservoirs is a much harder task. This difficulty is due to the higher uncertainties associated with their physical and geometrical parameters. More than 60% of world, and almost 70%...
