    Abstract
In this article, oxygen barrier properties of nanocomposite films composed of organoclay (OC), high-density polyethylene (HDPE), and ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) copolymer have been investigated. The nanocomposite films whose EVA forms a dominant fraction were prepared using the solution method. The dispersion of the OC in the HDPE/EVA blend was improved through taking two-step procedure in the preparation of nanocomposite. First, the OC and EVA were dissolved in chloroform. Then, the resulting product, after evaporating most of the solvent, along with HDPE was dissolved in xylene. The obtained nanocomposite films underwent a number of tests in order to examine their barrier properties...

    Abstract
This paper presents a new experimental-numerical method for deriving the transfer functions of a half-automobile model, containing: chassis, body, engine, engine mount and steering wheel, with five degrees of freedom. In this method different parts of system are not required to be disassembled from the main system and the transfer functions of subsystem are obtained through testing of the whole system. This method is based on the experimental results and does not need a mathematical model of the half-automobile. In this method, transfer functions of various parts of chassis are calculated through obtaining the response of secondary elements mounted on the chassis to the displacement input...

    , Article Phase Transitions ; Volume 84, Issue 1 , 2011 , Pages 1-14 ; 01411594 (ISSN) Khodabakhshi, F ; Maleksaeedi, S ; Paydar, M. H ; Saadat, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
The effect of α-Al 2O 3 seeds and MgO on the densification behavior and microstructure of the nanocrystalline γ-Al 2O 3 powder was investigated. The required α-Al 2O 3 seeds were produced by 'autogenous seeding' where the seeds were obtained by calcination of the initial nanosized γ-Al 2O 3 powders above its transformation temperature and incorporated into γ-Al 2O 3 matrix. The seeds were characterized by means of laser particle size analyzer, X-ray diffraction, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface analyzer. The simultaneous influence of α-Al 2O 3 seeds and MgO on γ-Al 2O 3 behavior was evaluated by differential thermal analysis, densitometry, and electron microscopy. The results showed that...

    , Article International Journal for Numerical and Analytical Methods in Geomechanics ; Volume 31, Issue 14 , 2007 , Pages 1609-1629 ; 03639061 (ISSN) Darbandi, M ; Torabi, S. O ; Saadat, M ; Daghighi, Y ; Jarrahbashi, D ; Sharif University of Technology
    2007
    Abstract
The main objective of this work is to develop a novel moving-mesh finite-volume method capable of solving the seepage problem in domains with arbitrary geometries. One major difficulty in analysing the seepage problem is the position of phreatic boundary which is unknown at the beginning of solution. In the current algorithm, we first choose an arbitrary solution domain with a hypothetical phreatic boundary and distribute the finite volumes therein. Then, we derive the conservative statement on a curvilinear co-ordinate system for each cell and implement the known boundary conditions all over the solution domain. Defining a consistency factor, the inconsistency between the hypothesis...

    Abstract
Flow turbulators have promising heat transfer applications. Here, the novel design proposed in our previous study (vibrational ball turbulators, VBTs, mounted on an elastic wire inside a circular tube) is investigated experimentally from heat transfer and thermal performance standpoints. The effects of diameter (Y) and longitudinal distance (pitch, X) ratios of VBTs, the Reynolds number, and the axial tension of the wire (σ0) on the average Nusselt number (Nu), the average Nusselt number ratio (Nu divided by that of a plain tube, Nup), the friction factor ratio (f/fp), and a parameter called the thermal performance factor (η=(Nu/Nup)/(f/fp)1/3) are studied. Different ball diameter (Y=0.3,...

Design and Prototyping of an Attitude Control System for Rigid Bodies

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Saadat, Mohsen (Author) ; Jalali, Mir Abbas (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Attitude control of rigid bodies is a complicated but attractive problem in dynamics. One of its main practical applications is in satellite attitude control and specifically in space telescope orientation control. Using fuel thrusters is not only expensive in most cases, but also it cannot be considered as an appropriate solution from reliability and economic aspects in long-term applications such as space telescopes and telecommunication satellites. On the other hand, magnetic torquers and momentum wheels cannot be utilized for rapid and large maneuvers due to their inability in generating large torques, which are needed in such maneuvers. As a result, another type of attitude control...

Design and Manufacturing of Intelligent Speed Hump

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Rashedi, Mohammad (Author) ; Saadat Foumani, Mahmoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The goal of using speed humps is to reduce the velocity of cars to allowable value. Reducing the speed more than necessary before arriving at the hump, causes losing kinetic energy whose compensation needs consuming more fuel. In fact, the total fuel consumption of vehicles is noticeable and it expresses the need for allowable speed definition to prevent wasting fuel. In this project, using different methods in engineering design and by defining allowable speed, an intelligent speed hump is designed and selected from different patterns which may remain protuberant or become like the road surface in level. The parts considered for this hump are selected simple to lower the cost of...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Rahnavard, Mostafa (Author) ; Saadat Foumani, Mahmoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this research, the effect of variable stiffness and damping, in suspension system, on car performance was studied. The optimization of car performance was obtained by minimization of an objective function including the body acceleration, suspension travel and tire deflection. Firstly, considering the stochastic input for a quarter car model, minimization of the objective function was done by changing the stiffness and damping coefficients in the frequency domain. The Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) method was implemented to minimize the objective function. In order to supply the active force obtained by optimization, different semi-active designs, in which stiffness and damping were...

    Abstract
Hydrophilic polymers are widely used in enhanced oil recovery (EOR) processes to increase water viscosity during polymer flooding. However, these polymers increase the viscosity of injected water in undesirable strands, before reaching considerable positions that make some problems in polymer flooding process such as thermal, mechanical, bacterial degradation, surface absorption and undesirable plugging. In this study, a novel core-shell structure of polyacrylamide as an active polymer and nanoscale coating polystyrene as a shell polymer was designed and prepared to intelligently control mobility ratio in oil reservoirs and overcome weakness and limitations of classical polymer flooding....

System-Level Vulnerability Estimation For Components of Multiprocessor Systems

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Saadat, Mohammad Hashem (Author) ; Gorshi, Alireza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Cache memory is one of the most important parts of the microprocessors. Caches improve performance by bringing data and instructions near the processors and decreasing the access time to data and instructions. But caches are also vulnerable to some kind of error called soft error. When an error happens in a cache, suddenly can propagate throughout the system and affect the integrity and reliability of the overall system. There are actually two types of errors in cache memories, permanent (hard) errors and transient (soft) errors. Previous studies have shown that about 92% of system reboots are initiated by soft-error occurring in cache memory. Soft-errors have two main sources, alpha...
