    , Article 2004 IEEE 60th Vehicular Technology Conference, VTC2004-Fall: Wireless Technologies for Global Security, Los Angeles, CA, 26 September 2004 through 29 September 2004 ; Volume 60, Issue 3 , 2004 , Pages 1899-1903 ; 15502252 (ISSN) Taghavi, Z ; Nasiri Kenari, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2004
    Abstract
In this paper, we consider an iterative multiuser receiver for the coded MC-FH system, first introduced in [4], in the presence of partial-band interference. The structure of the receiver consists of two principal parts: multiuser soft input soft output (SISO) detector and SISO channel decoder. When the channel is under the attack of jamming, for optimum detection we propose to add a jamming estimator to multiuser SISO detector. So, the new SISO multiuser detector consists of multiuser likelihood calculator (MULC) and iterative jamming estimator (JE). The numerical results show that the proposed receiver works quite well compared to the ideal receiver which has the perfect channel state...

Nanotechnology is an emerging field in technology that exploits the chemical and physical properties created by careful manipulation of materials at atomic and molecular levels. These properties lead to abilities created by this technology, which many scientists regard as the next industrial revolution. Although Nanotechnology promises bright future, today, researchers having learned from the history of technology are trying to predict its unwanted aspects and negative effects to decrease its potential issues. Researchers of Nano-ethics are trying to enable us to encounter Nanotechnology’s achievements in a reasonable way, by studying its ethical and social obligations. Since in our country,...

A Critical Reading of Russel on Causation

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Moulavi Ardakani, Reza (Author) ; Taghavi, Mostafa (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Causation is one of the most old and difficult problems of Metaphysics which is also important in Science and Philosophy of Science. There are three different views in the Ontology of Causation—Eliminativism, Fundamentalism and Reductionism. Also we know that the Ontology of Causation can be equated with the question of the difference between Causal and Non-Causal series of events, such that the answers to this question are correspondent to the mentioned views: 1)Eliminativism: There is not any difference between those two series and the concept of Causation does not have any objective or external being. 2)Primitivism: There is a difference between them but it can not be explained in any...

Analysis of Bruno Latour’s Metaphysics and Realism

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Farokhi Kakesh, Hadis (Author) ; Taghavi, Mostafa (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Bruno Latour is one of the well-known contemporary philosophers in the field of science and technology studies. He is specially famouse for his work in laboratory studies and also for rejecting the dualities of modernity. By rejecting subject/object division, Latour opens new perpectives in Ontology. Ontology is one of the most important contributions of Latour to philosophy. He is also one of the primary developers of actor-network theory. In this research, I elaborate on ontological ideas of Latour. First, I will clarify his position in regard to modernity and show how he withdraws from dualities of modernity. Then I will explain his ontological pluralism. Based on this approach, I will...

Optimal agent framework: a novel, cost-effective model articulation to fill the integration gap between agent-based modeling and decision-making

    , Article Complexity ; Volume 2021 , 2021 ; 10762787 (ISSN) Taghavi, A ; Khaleghparast, S ; Eshghi, K ; Sharif University of Technology
    Hindawi Limited  2021
    Abstract
Making proper decisions in today's complex world is a challenging task for decision makers. A promising approach that can support decision makers to have a better understanding of complex systems is agent-based modeling (ABM). ABM has been developing during the last few decades as a methodology with many different applications and has enabled a better description of the dynamics of complex systems. However, the prescriptive facet of these applications is rarely portrayed. Adding a prescriptive decision-making (DM) aspect to ABM can support the decision makers in making better or, in some cases, optimized decisions for the complex problems as well as explaining the investigated phenomena. In...

Stagnation-point flow of upper-convected maxwell fluids

    , Article International Journal of Non-Linear Mechanics ; Volume 41, Issue 10 , 2006 , Pages 1242-1247 ; 00207462 (ISSN) Sadeghy, K ; Hajibeygi, H ; Taghavi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2006
    Abstract
Two-dimensional stagnation-point flow of viscoelastic fluids is studied theoretically assuming that the fluid obeys the upper-convected Maxwell (UCM) model. Boundary-layer theory is used to simplify the equations of motion which are further reduced to a single non-linear third-order ODE using the concept of stream function coupled with the technique of the similarity solution. The equation so obtained was solved using Chebyshev pseudo-spectral collocation-point method. Based on the results obtained in the present work, it is concluded that the well-established but controversial prediction that in stagnation-point flows of viscoelastic fluids the velocity inside the boundary layer may exceed...

    Abstract
In this paper, we provide the exact multiuser performance analysis of the MC-FH system introduced in [1] in the presence of partial-band interference in both AWGN and fading channels. For comparisons, we also provide the performance analysis of both MC-FH and FFH systems based on Gaussian distribution assumption. The partial-band interference is assumed as a Gaussian zero-mean random process with flat power spectrum on a fraction of the signal bandwidth. Our numerical results indicate that in both channels, the MC-FH system significantly outperforms the FFH system in the applications considered. Further, they indicate that the Gaussian analysis works quite well at high number of users. ©2...

Planning for groundwater sustainable use: A case study in Nishapur Plain, Iran

    Elsevier B.V  2020
    Abstract
In Iran, due to arid and semi-arid climate, groundwater resources play an essential role in food production, as well as domestic and industrial water supply. In recent years, increasing population, scarcity of surface water resources, and effects of worldwide and regional climate change have resulted in over-exploitation and unsustainability of these resources in the country. The present study aims to estimate groundwater sustainable yield, examine effects of spatial and temporal scale, and propose a plan for groundwater sustainable use in Nishapur Plain, in the north-east of Iran. In investigating the effects of spatial scale, the area of the plain is divided into several zones, with...

    Abstract
A single-user receiver structure for space-time coded CDMA downlink is studied in a multiuser frequency selective channel. The proposed scheme is a two dimensional Decision Feedback Equalizer (2D-DFE), whose filters are optimized based on the MMSE criterion to cancel noise, ISI, and MUI with a reasonable complexity. By modeling the spreading codes of the interfering users as random sequences, system performance has been evaluated using the Gaussian approximation. Two models for the desired user's spreading sequence have been considered and compared. Our numerical results show that in both cases the 2D-DFE exhibits significant performance improvement and capacity enhancement over the standard...

    Abstract
In this paper, two single-antenna receiver structures for multiuser space-time coded wideband CDMA downlink are studied in frequency selective fading channels. The first structure is the standard space-time coded RAKE receiver, while in the second structure, we have proposed a two dimensional Decision Feedback Equalizer (2D-DFE), whose filters are optimized to jointly cancel noise, ISI, and MUI based on the MMSE criterion. For this receiver, by modeling the spreading sequences of the interfering users as random sequences, system bit error probability has been calculated using the Gaussian approximation. Our numerical results show that the 2D-DFE exhibits significant performance improvement...

Comparative Study of Ideal Scientific Community in Viewpoints of Nasr and Feyerabend

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Zargar, Zahra (Author) ; Hosseini, Hassan (Supervisor) ; Taghavi, Mostafa (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Today, several centuries after the time when science began to flourish of science, everybody is familiar with destroying consequences of modern science and technology, in addition to its achievments. Besides, domination and exclusive position of science in educational system and government organizations have marginalized alternative knowledge. Thus, some people found this trend dangerous for humankind’s fate and tried to change this situation. Nasr and Feyerabend are two philosophers that despite their different work area both criticise modern science and try to establish their own ideal scientific community.Nasr’s approach is regeneration of traditional science which was prevalent before...
