Laboratory Study on the Effect of Thermal Cracking of Heavy Oil

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Rahmnai Khajeh, Saeed (Author) ; Bastani, Dariush (Supervisor) ; Seifkordi, Ali Akbar (Supervisor) ; Safavi, Mohammad Ali (Supervisor) ; Shafeghat, Amin (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
The Visbreaking process is one of the Residue upgrading method, which, in addition to the production of mid-distillate products, also reduces the viscosity of feed. By reducing the viscosity of the feed, the amount of cutter stock is reduced to produce fuel oil. Since the refiners want to achieve the maximum conversion in the visbreaker unit, it is necessary to estimate the proper operating conditions and distribution of the products. Increasing in conversion in a visbreaker unit will lead to a refinancing profit. In this work, four Vacuum Residual oil from Iranian Refineries were selected for studying on visbreaking process. Experiments were carried out at RIPI-Petroleum Refining Technology...

Modeling and Laboratory Evaluation of Rheological Properties of Water based Mud for Horizontal Extended Reach Well

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Latifi Shirdar, Babak (Author) ; Taghikhani, Vahid (Supervisor) ; Ghazanfari, Mohammad Hossein (Supervisor) ; Tahmasbi Nowtarki, Koroush (Co-Supervisor) ; Kalhor, Mojtaba (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
One of the most important challenges in drilling horizontal and directional wells is the optimization of hydraulics and hole cleaning and ECD management. In these wells, poor hole cleaning can lead to formation of cutting bed on the low side of the annulus and cause problems such as stuck pipe or increase in torque and drag. Also poor hydraulic design can lead to decrease in rate of penetration and thus, increase in costs. Mud weight should be placed inside the range of mud window (more than pore pressure and less than formation fracture pressure) in order to prevent kick of reservoir fluid or mud loss.In this thesis, the main goal is to optimize hydraulics and hole cleaning and manage ECD...

Investigation of Ionic Diffusion and Mixing Phenomena in Polymer-Enhanced Low-Salinity Waterflooding Using Molecular Dynamics Simulation

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Abdolmaleki, Amir Hossein (Author) ; Ayatollahi, Shahaboddin (Supervisor) ; Mahani, Hassan (Supervisor) ; Esmaeilbeig, Mohammad Amin (Co-Supervisor) ; Pourkhiabani, Nahid (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
Various studies have confirmed that water salinity and its composition significantly affect the efficiency of the waterflooding process. Field-scale operation of low-salinity water injection has been proven to be a cost-effective enhanced oil recovery (EOR) method which is also compatible with the environmental regulations. Although this method has satisfactory results, it faces some challenges, such as in-situ mixing of the injection low-salinity water with the saline water in the host reservoir. The salinity of the injected water increases, as it contacts the high-salinity reservoir brine in the pores. This phenomenon significantly impairs the efficiency of this technique, and increases...

    Abstract
TiO2–graphene (TiO2–GR) nanocomposites were synthesized using photocatalytic reduction method. TiO2–GR nanocomposites were thereafter doped with noble metals (Pt and Pd) by chemical reduction of the corresponding cations. The samples were characterized by different techniques. The addition of GR to TiO2 decreases the crystalline size of TiO2 due to the homogeneous dispersion of the TiO2 nanoparticles on GR sheets and prevention of coagulation of TiO2 nanoparticles during synthesis process. In addition, the surface area of TiO2 was increased by addition of GR and deposition of noble metals which helps to prevent agglomeration of graphene sheets and TiO2 nanoparticles. Red shifts to the higher...

    , Article Ceramics International ; Volume 40, Issue 1, Part A, January 2014, Pages 951–960 Akbarpour, M.R. (Mohammad Reza) ; Salahi, E ; Alikhani Hesari, F ; Simchi, A ; Kim, H. S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Cu/SiC nanocomposite powders with homogeneously distributed nanosize SiC particles were produced by high energy mechanical milling (MM). Scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and micro-hardness and density measurements were performed to understand the effects of microstructure and hardness on compaction behavior during MM. The effects of SiC nanoparticle content and mechanical milling time on apparent density (AD) and tap density (TD) of the nanocomposite powders were systematically investigated. The Hausner ratio (HR), defined as TD to AD, were estimated to evaluate friction between the particles. Increasing MM duration and SiC content resulted...

    Abstract
Cationic polymers such as poly-L-lysine (PLL) are able to interact electrostatically with DNA to produce polymeric systems with nanometric diameters due to the neutralization and accumulation of DNA. This study integrates the outstanding properties of carbon quantum dots (CQDs) with PLL to develop a novel gene delivery vehicle with a core-shell hybrid nanostructure. The CQD/PLL core-shell nanoparticles (NPs) were, therefore, synthesized in such a way that they had narrow size distribution and an average diameter under 10 nm, both of which were confirmed by dynamic light scattering (DLS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy exhibited that...

    Abstract
Higher than a standard level, the humidity provides a suitable environment for the pathogenic microorganisms to grow and increases energy consumption for cooling, increasing greenhouse gas emissions. Desiccant air-conditioning (DAC) is an effective method to reduce humidity and energy simultaneously. Conventional desiccants are not suitable for use as a desiccant in building air conditioners, mainly because of high regeneration temperature and other issues such as limited equilibrium capacity and hydrothermal and cyclic instability. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a novel class of porous crystalline materials without the disadvantages of traditional desiccants. They benefit from a huge...

    Abstract
Aggregation of the natively unfolded protein α-synuclein (α-syn) is key to the development of Parkinson's disease (PD). Some nanoparticles (NPs) can inhibit this process and in turn be used for treatment of PD. Using simulation strategies, we show here that α-syn self-assembly is electrostatically driven. Dimerization by head-to-head monomer contact is triggered by dipole-dipole interactions and subsequently stabilized by van der Waals interactions and hydrogen bonds. Therefore, we hypothesized that charged nano-objects could interfere with this process and thus prevent α-syn fibrillation. In our simulations, positively and negatively charged graphene sheets or superparamagnetic iron oxide...

    Abstract
Background Across low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs), one in ten deaths in children younger than 5 years is attributable to diarrhoea. The substantial between-country variation in both diarrhoea incidence and mortality is attributable to interventions that protect children, prevent infection, and treat disease. Identifying subnational regions with the highest burden and mapping associated risk factors can aid in reducing preventable childhood diarrhoea. Methods We used Bayesian model-based geostatistics and a geolocated dataset comprising 15 072 746 children younger than 5 years from 466 surveys in 94 LMICs, in combination with findings of the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries,...

    Abstract
Background: Drowning is a leading cause of injury-related mortality globally. Unintentional drowning (International Classification of Diseases (ICD) 10 codes W65-74 and ICD9 E910) is one of the 30 mutually exclusive and collectively exhaustive causes of injury-related mortality in the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study. This study's objective is to describe unintentional drowning using GBD estimates from 1990 to 2017. Methods: Unintentional drowning from GBD 2017 was estimated for cause-specific mortality and years of life lost (YLLs), age, sex, country, region, Socio-demographic Index (SDI) quintile, and trends from 1990 to 2017. GBD 2017 used standard GBD methods for estimating mortality...

    Abstract
The safe, highly effective measles vaccine has been recommended globally since 1974, yet in 2017 there were more than 17 million cases of measles and 83,400 deaths in children under 5 years old, and more than 99% of both occurred in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs)1–4. Globally comparable, annual, local estimates of routine first-dose measles-containing vaccine (MCV1) coverage are critical for understanding geographically precise immunity patterns, progress towards the targets of the Global Vaccine Action Plan (GVAP), and high-risk areas amid disruptions to vaccination programmes caused by coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)5–8. Here we generated annual estimates of routine childhood...
