    Abstract
A feasible and low cost approach to implement a nonplanar dual-polarized log-periodic dipole array antenna using printed circuit board (PCB) technology is proposed. The proposed antenna utilizes a very short transition from a coaxial cable to a balanced twin-lead transmission line to realize an ultrawide bandwidth balun, and has two distinct scaling factor values for high and low frequency elements. A prototype of the antenna operating over the frequency range of 1-13 GHz was designed, fabricated, and tested. An average gain of 7 dBi is obtained. Measured VSWR, cross-polarization and front-to-back ratio are better than 2.6, -16 dB, and 22 dB, respectively

Fatigue Life Assessment of the Joints in Offshore Structures:Considering Residual Stress Caused By Welding Process and Elliptical Crack

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Yari Boroujeni, Ayoub (Author) ; Farrahi, Gholam Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Offshore structures are valuable structures used in the offshore petroleum and gas fields for the purpose of hydrocarbon production operation. These structures are influenced by wave loads. Sea waves are inherently alternative and for this reason fatigue failure is considered as one of the most important modes of failure in these structures. Joints in these structures are made by tubes and they are called tubular joints. The joining process in manufacturing of these joints is welding. Welding process induces residual stresses, mostly tensional, in the substructure of materials. This tensional residual stress has a destructive effect on fatigue life of the joint and increases probability of...

Design and Optimization of a Lens for Beam Shaping in a Terahertz Standoff Imaging System

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Abbaszadeh, Afshin (Author) ; Ahmadi Boroujeni, Mehdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Terahertz waves have three important features that make them suitable for security imaging. 1. THz waves can penetrate or can be absorbed from many of non-metallic and non-polar materials and are perfectly reflected from most of the metals, 2. Drugs and explosives have terahertz spectra that can be detected by THz imaging, 3. THz waves do not have an ionizing effect and are harmless to the human body. Lenses can be considered as a major component of the terahertz imaging systems. Because of the relatively large terahertz wavelengths compared with wavelengths, compression, and decreasing the dimensions of the lenses in these systems matters a lot. In addition, reducing the wave reflection...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Imanbeigi, Ehsan (Author) ; Ahmadi Boroujeni, Mehdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Beam shaping, the transformation of radiated Gaussian beam from the millimeter wave source (conical horn antenna) into a flat-top beam at a certain distance, in the Millimeter wave active stand-off imaging system can be done in different ways, among them, beam shaping with a concave-convex lens (double-sided lens) in transmission mode (previous research done) can be mentioned. This lens consists of a convex-plane and a plane-concave lenses. when the electromagnetic wave passes through the convex-plane part, the wave front of the incident electric field changes from spherical to plane so that the divergent incident rays become parallel, and then the phase profile of the electric field changes...

    Abstract
We report on the response of a monolithic high Tc transition-edge bolometer to about 3 mmWave for the first time. The detector structure consisting of 400-nm YBa2Cu3O7-x(YBCO) film on buffered yttria stabilized zirconia substrate without any coupled antenna, shows bolometric type responsivity to the 3-mmWave radiation at its transition temperature. The YBCO thin film Ce0.9La0.1O2 buffer layer are both fabricated by the metal-organic deposition method. The meander line pattern of the bolometer is designed for obtaining maximum absorption and responsivity possible when the polarized radiation of the source is aligned with the pattern. Meander lines are 50 micrometers wide and 1.5-mm long. We...

    Abstract
The overall success in launching discovered drugs is tightly restricted to the high rate of late-stage failures, which ultimately inhibits the distribution of medicines in markets. As a result, it is imperative that methods reliably predict the effectiveness and, more critically, the toxicity of medicine early in the drug development process before clinical trials be continuously innovated. We must stay up to date with the fast appearance of new infections and diseases by rapidly developing the requisite vaccinations and medicines. Modern in vitro models of disease may be used as an alternative to traditional disease models, and advanced technology can be used for the creation of...

Analysis of Spoof Surface Plasmonic Waveguides for Realizing THz Planar Circuits

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Khosrovani Moghaddam, Mohammad Ali (Author) ; Ahmadi Boroujeni, Mehdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The effect of dielectric cladding on the waveguiding characteristics of an array of metallic pillars on a metal plane in the terahertz band is explored. Firstly, the 2D structure made up of a metallic grating of infinite lateral width is studied analytically to get more insight into the problem. It is seen that by using dielectric cladding decaying length of the domino waveguide is less than one tenth of the wavelength in a frequency bandwidth.
Then the ideas inferred from the 2D structure are applied to the realistic 3D structure that has a finite lateral width. It is shown that by proper design of the dielectric medium surrounding the metallic pillars the modal field confinement can...

    Abstract
In the presented paper, an analytical model is developed for calculation of the air gap magnetic flux density in the axial-flux surface-mounted PM machines. The slotting effect is taken into account in the air gap magnetic flux distribution, accurately. The main novelty of this study is replacing the stator teeth by some surface currents at the border of the removed stator teeth. The uniqueness theorem is applied to find the surface currents. The two-dimensional (2D) field solution in the slotless machine is solved easily by separation of variables method. The multi-slice quasi-3D method is applied for taking 3D nature of field distribution into account. In addition, the back-EMF, armature...
