    , Article IET Control Theory and Applications ; Volume 5, Issue 2 , 2011 , Pages 323-333 ; 17518644 (ISSN) Esfahani, P. M ; Farokhi, F ; Karimi-Ghartemani, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
This paper addresses the problem of optimal state-feedback design for a class of non-linear systems. The method is applicable to all non-linear systems which can be linearised using the method of state-feedback linearisation. The alternative is to use linear optimisation techniques for the linearised equations, but then there is no guarantee that the original non-linear system behaves optimally. The authors use feedback linearisation technique to linearise the system and then design a state feedback for the feedback-linearised system in such a way that it ensures optimal performance of the original non-linear system. The method cannot ensure global optimality of the solution but the global...

    , Article Proceedings - IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation, 12 May 2009 through 17 May 2009, Kobe ; 2009 , Pages 3347-3352 ; 10504729 (ISSN); 9781424427895 (ISBN) Mohajerin Esfahani, P ; Karimi-Ghartemani, M ; Namvar, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
This paper proposes a method to suboptimally tune the control parameters in a conventional Lyapunov-Based method which shares the same concept of control design with sliding mode approach as applied to the robot manipulators. Optimal tuning of such parameters involves handling of nonlinearities in system dynamics and cost functions, which makes the problem challenging. We propose a step-by-step numerical algorithm that select suboptimal parameters while ensuring system stability. The controller is, suboptimal due to the facts that (1) it is in the form of a Slotine-type sliding mode control, (2) the numerical recursive algorithm might fall into a local minimum, and (3) the controller...

    Abstract
In the present study, two novel annular photobioreactors (PBR) were developed to enhance microalgae growth. One of these photobioreactors used mirrors outside the PBR, while the other one utilized phosphorescence materials inside the PBR. The results of the study suggested that the use of mirrors and phosphorescence materials led to 70% and 30% increase, respectively, in the light intensity without any additional energy consumption. Further, the results revealed that when compared with the base case, the biomass concentration increased by 91% and 24% in PBR with mirrors and phosphorescence materials, respectively. In conclusion, an improvement in PBRs resulted in efficient light to biomass...

    Abstract
Impressive progress in hardwares and developing encryption algorithms in last two decades are caused increase in using encryption protocols in network communications. In last decade, users use privacy preserving networks like Jap and Tor to protect their privacy. These networks protect users' data from eavesdroppers by using three-layer encryption and intermediate nodes between user and target website. Recent researches show that Deep Neural Networks can predict websites viewed by users with high accuracy. In other words, privacy preserving networks suffer from information leakage. In this research, we introduced some of the most powerful methods in encrypted traffic classification and then...

Retrieving Lost Quantum Information Due to Non-Unital Noise by Partial Access to the Environment

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Shirazi Zamani, Ali (Author) ; Memarzadeh Esfahani, Laleh (Supervisor)
    Abstract
One of the main obstacles in constructing quantum computers and implementations of quantum computations and communications protocols, is the occurrence of quantum noise. In fact, due to the unavoidable interaction of the system and its surrounding environment, errors always occur and the system should be protected against noise or we need to find a way to detect the errors and correct them. Regarding the importance of the subject, intensive investigations have been done in this direction. Different approaches for correcting quantum errors are introduced. In this thesis, we focus on an approach based on collecting information from the environment. It has been shown that for a class of...

    Abstract
A series of cross-linked ionic polymers based on styrene-functionalized imidazolium salts with chloride, hexafluorophosphate, or tetrafluoroborate counter anions have been prepared and characterized using a range of analytical and spectroscopic techniques and electron microscopy. The polymer with the chloride anion is an efficient catalyst for the cycloaddition of carbon dioxide with epoxides to afford cyclic carbonates. The cross-linked polymer is insoluble in organic solvents and is highly stable and therefore can be easily recycled and reused

Formal Analysis of Ad Hoc Network Protocols Using Process Algebra

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Ghassemi Esfahani, Fatemeh (Author) ; Movaghar Rahimabadi, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Wireless Ad hoc Networks (MANET) are decentrilized networks, without any static infrastructure. In these networks, nodes communicate directly or indirectly via other nodes. They could move arbitrary, which makes the underlying topology dynamic. Therefore, MANET protocols not only should operate correctly, but they should be able to tolerate faults that
may arise due to unreliable wireless communication and unexpected changes in the underlying topology, while the quality of service metrics in benchmarks are satisfied. Therefore a unified framework for verification and evaluation of MANET protocols would alleviate the design process of such protocols. In this thesis, we provide a formal...

    , Article Journal of Molecular Liquids ; Volume 220 , 2016 , Pages 961-969 ; 01677322 (ISSN) Zeibi Shirejini, S. R ; Rashidi, S ; Abolfazli Esfahani, J ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier  2016
    Abstract
This paper simulates Al2O3-water nanofluid flow and forced convection around a rotating circular cylinder. The governing parameters are Reynolds number (1 ≤ Re ≤ 100), solid volume fraction of nanoparticles (0 ≤ φ ≤ 0.05) and non-dimensional rotation rate (0 ≤ α ≤ 3). The simulations are performed to study the effects of mentioned parameters on the heat transfer rate and fluid flow characteristics. The governing equations including the continuity, momentum, and energy equations are solved with a finite volume method. It is observed that the reduction of heat transfer with increase in rotation rate is in the vicinity of 6.9% and 32% for Re = 5 and 100, respectively at φ = 0.05. Furthermore,...

    Abstract
As the ordinary least squares (OLS) method is very sensitive to outliers as well as to correlated responses, a robust coefficient estimation method is proposed in this paper for multi-response surfaces in multistage processes based on M-estimators. In this approach, experimental designs are used in which the intermediate response variables may act as covariates in the next stages. The performances of both the ordinary multivariate OLS and the proposed robust multi-response surface approach are analyzed and compared through extensive simulation experiments. Sum of the squared errors in estimating the regression coefficients reveals the efficiency of the proposed robust approach. © 2018 Taylor...

UWB orthogonal pulse design using Sturm–Liouville boundary value problem

    , Article Signal Processing ; Volume 159 , 2019 , Pages 147-158 ; 01651684 (ISSN) Amini, A ; Mohajerin Esfahani, P ; Ghavami, M ; Marvasti, F ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The problem of designing UWB pulses which meet specific spectrum requirements is usually treated by filtering common pulses such as Gaussian doublets, modified Hermite polynomials and wavelets. When there is the need to have a number of orthogonal pulses (e.g., in a multiuser scenario), a naive approach is to filter all the members of an orthogonal set, which is likely to destroy their orthogonality property. In this paper, we study the design of a set of pulses that simultaneously satisfy the orthogonality property and spectrum requirements. Our design is based on the eigenfunctions of Sturm–Liouville boundary value problems. Indeed, we introduce Sturm–Liouville differential equations for...

    Abstract
Nowadays, many manufacturing and service systems provide products and services to their customers in several consecutive stages of operations, in each of which one or more quality characteristics of interest are monitored. In these environments, the final quality in the last stage not only depends on the quality of the task performed in that stage but also is dependent on the quality of the products and services in intermediate stages as well as the design parameters in each stage. In this paper, a novel methodology based on the posterior preference approach is proposed to robustly optimize these multistage processes. In this methodology, a multi-response surface optimization problem is...

    , Article International Conference on Risk Management and Engineering Management, Toronto, ON, 18 April 2008 through 18 April 2008 ; 2008 , Pages 24-29 ; 9780978348458 (ISBN) Kianfar, S ; Saeidi, A ; Esfahani, N. N ; Akbari, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
The inventory replenishment policy exploited by a supply chain has a principle role in amplification of order variability compared to fluctuations in customers' demands. This phenomenon is known as the bullwhip effect. In this paper, a four echelon supply chain is simulated and the impacts of continuous and periodic review order-up-to policies on the bullwhip effect are examined. Experiments have been conducted to analyze the influence of the lead time in deterministic conditions, and also the variance of demand and lead time in stochastic circumstances on the bullwhip effect and the corresponding cost. It was observed that in low demand and lead time variances, it is more efficient to...

Reducing occupant injury in frontal crashes for a low-floor city bus

    , Article 2005 ASME International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition, IMECE 2005, Orlando, FL, 5 November 2005 through 11 November 2005 ; Volume 2006 , 2006 , Pages 113-120 Sahraei Esfahani, E ; Darvish, K ; Parnianpour, M ; Bateni, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2006
    Abstract
In this research, the effect of beam buckling in a predefined direction is used to reduce occupant injuries in frontal crashes of an ultra-low-floor (ULF) city bus. In ULF buses, the floor structure consists of several longitudinal long beams, which in case of a frontal crash may buckle due to the axial impact. The direction of rotational acceleration of the driver seat due to buckling is highly affected by the position of the driver seat. A finite element model of an ULF bus was developed using LS-Dyna. The driver model, a Hybrid III 50 th male dummy with deformable jacket and abdomen, was restrained to the seat with a 3-point belt. An Elastic-Plastic material model was used for the bus...

A new method of phase noise compensation in OFDM

    , Article 2003 International Conference on Communications (ICC 2003), Anchorage, AK, 11 May 2003 through 15 May 2003 ; Volume 5 , 2003 , Pages 3443-3446 ; 05361486 (ISSN) Gholami, M. R ; Nader Esfahani, S ; Eftekhar, A. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2003
    Abstract
The local oscillator phase noise can severely affect the performance of OFDM systems. In this paper a new method is presented for compensation of this phase noise. The method is based on the fact that the scattered pilots, which are used for channel estimation, are subject to the same phase error as the OFDM symbols. Least square approach is used to exploit the phase noise information that exists in the scattered pilots and compensate the phase noise on the OFDM symbols. Simulation results show that the method is very effective, especially in high SNR

    Abstract
In this thesis, the aim is to stating some of the noncommutative geometry(NCG) applications in formulating and describing the gravity. So, in the first chapter, we will work on some of metric aspects of NCG. In this chapter, we will review elements of the spin geometry, specifically we will define the Dirac operator which is the most important object in this thesis. Then, we will try to find counterparts of some of Riemannian geometric notions like integral and distance in the NCG framework. We will define some notions such as noncommutative infinitesimals, Dixmier trace, Wodzicki residue, noncommutative integral and spectral triples. Then, in the second chapter, we will work on some of the...

    Ricci Curvature on Graphs

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Naghibi, Ali (Author) ; Esfahani Zadeh, Mostafa (Supervisor) ; Daneshgar, Amir (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In the present study, the Ricci curvature is defined on the graphs by using two methods and the lower bounds are obtained. In the first method, which is related to Bakry and Emery, a definition for Ricci curvature and lower bounds would be obtained by using Curvature-Dimension inequalities. The second method which is related to Ollivier, is based on the fact that in Riemannian Geometry, the Ricci Curvature controls the velocity of convergence and divergence of emanated geodesics from a same source. Next, the more Curvature-Dimension inequalities for Ricci curvature would be obtained by using local clustering. Finally, the Bonnet-Myers theorem would be proved on the graphs.

    Discrete Exterior Calculus

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ebrahimi, Esmail (Author) ; Esfahani Zadeh, Mostafa (Supervisor) ; Daneshgar, Amir (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis, a discrete exterior calculus is studied. Discrete exterior calculus is an attempt to create a discrete analogy of differential geometry and topology which is potentially applicable in computer science and physics. At first, simplicial complexes are presented as approximation of smooth manifolds. Then discrete forms and discrete exterior derivative are defined. We will observe that Stokes, theorem can be stated and proved in discrete analogy too. We will obtain Hodge operator by using dual complex and after that discrete Laplacian and Heat kernel will be calculated by using Hodge operator. In addition, we will define discrete vector field independent of discrete forms and then...
