Design and Development of a Transformer Restricted Earth Fault Protection Immune to Current Transformer Saturation

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Anani, Esmaeil (Author) ; Hajipour, Ehsan (Supervisor)
    Abstract
One of the shortcomings of differential logic in power transformers is its inability to detect small percentage faults at the end of the winding. The occurrence of a phase-to-ground short circuit in the last few percent of the winding near the neutral causes a very large fault current to pass through the neutral and the faulted coils, while the changes in the current observed at the transformer terminal will be very small. To improve the performance of the power transformer protection system, a restricted earth fault (REF) protection is normally used in parallel with the differential protection. To implement REF protection, several solutions have been proposed in scientific and industrial...

Investigating Daylight Saving Time (DST)Impacts on the Electricity Power Consumption in Iran

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ramezani, Iman (Author) ; Hajipour, Ehsan (Supervisor)
    Abstract
This thesis examines the impact of daylight saving time policy on electricity consumption in Iran. After World War I, many countries gradually implemented annual time change laws to extend daylight availability. This involved moving a specific amount of time (usually one hour) forward in early spring and back in early autumn. Historically, the majority of the electricity load on power grids was due to lighting, so this decision made sense. However, with technological advances and diversification of electricity usage, this decision is now being questioned, particularly in light of air conditioning loads, which make up a large part of electricity usage in Iran. These loads have the potential...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ehsan, Amir Mousa (Author) ; Jalili, Rasoul (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In order to control accesses in semantic environments, a semantic-based access control and policy specification language should be choosen. Upon to them, some security mechanisms should be designed and implemented. Several access control models and policy specification languages have been arisen, but seldom have focused on designing mechanisms to satisfy their models in any environment. In this thesis, we focus on implementation aspects of access control in semantic environments. We chose semantic web as our studying environment and an extension of the SBAC model named MA(DL)2 as our access control model. To control accesses in the selected environment, we divide semantic web into some...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Sarparandeh, Mohammad Hossein (Author) ; Ehsan, Mehdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In order to reduce damage caused by power outages on rare events that lead to long-term disconnection of microgrid from utility grid, isolated mode performance of microgrids including wind and hudro turbines with energy storage systems is considered in this study. Using wind energy as a renewable resource is considered as an appropriate choice for power production in microgrids. However, the uncertainty in wind turbines power generation is something challenging. The existence of water resources near the wind farms causes a special opportunity for operation of these resources along with wind turbines. This thesis aimed at balancing energy supply and demand in island mode of microgrid,...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Abbaskhani Davanloo, Arash (Author) ; Ehsan, Mehdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
As electric energy loss in Iran is around 31 percent and 01 percent of this loss is related to the distribution of electric energy, management and operation of distribution network is of high importance. There are different ways for operating the distribution network while decreasing the loss, such as using capacitors, tap changers, energy storing devices, distributed generations, etc. One of the most common ways is to use Network Reconfiguration. In this thesis, daily reconfiguration of a 03-kV 22-bus distribution network is investigated. The objective function consists of cost of energy loss and improvement of voltage profile. Wind turbines are used as the sources of distributed generation...

    Abstract
This paper attempted to control a hybrid DC microgrid in islanded operation mode using decentralized power management strategies. Proposed adaptive I/V characteristic for hybrid photovoltaic (PV) and battery energy storage system (BESS) and wind turbine generator (WTG) adapts the distributed energy resources (DER) behavior independently in accordance with the load demand. Hence, the PV module can spend its maximum power on load demand and spend the extra power for charging the BESS, which will regulate DC bus voltage and maintain the power balance within the microgrid. When load demand is beyond the maximum generation power of PV unit, WTG will supply the energy shortage. The proposed...

    Abstract
In a medium term planning horizon, a retailer should determine its forward contracting and pool participating strategies as well as the selling price to be offered to the customers. Considering a competitive retail electricity market, the number of clients being supplied by any retailer is a function of the selling prices and some other characteristics of all the retailers. This paper presents an equilibrium problem formulation to model the retailer's medium term decision making problem considering the strategy of other retailers. Decision making of any single retailer is formulated as a risk constraint stochastic programming problem. Uncertainty of pool prices and clients' demands is...

    , Article International Transactions on Electrical Energy Systems ; Volume 26, Issue 5 , 2016 , Pages 920-933 ; 20507038 (ISSN) Kharrati, S ; Kazemi, M ; Ehsan, M ; Sharif University of Technology
John Wiley and Sons Ltd  2016
    Abstract
This paper presents a risk-constrained programming approach to solve a retailer's medium-term planning problem. A retailer tries to maximize its profit via determining the optimal price offered to the customers as well as optimal strategy of participating in futures and pool markets. The uncertainty of pool prices is modeled by an envelope-bound information-gap model. Another source of uncertainty in this problem is the clients' demand, which is considered via a scenario generation method. The proposed method is formulated as a bi-level stochastic programming problem based on the information-gap decision theory. The Karush-Kuhn-Tucker optimality conditions are used to convert the bi-level...
