System Level Modeling and Optimization of Accelerator-CPU Communication in Data Centers

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Haji Ali Khamseh, Amir (Author) ; Goudarzi, Maziar (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Due to the data centers rapid growth and introduction of a new basic type of massive data processing platforms which requires accelerators to speedup computation and enhance the efficiency and reduce power consumption, using accelerators is inevitable. Communication and data transfer time between software and hardware is the most of time spent on the use of accelerators. By optimizing this part of the hardware / software platform, we have achieved substantial results in this area. The aim of our study is to organize a survey of real accelerator characteristics. To figure out its defects and main drawbacks, in addition to improving the overall efficiency of system. The implementation of...

Speeding up of Genetic Structural Variation Detection

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Akbari Nejad Mousavi, Shaya (Author) ; Goudarzi, Maziar (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Large differences in chromosome structures, compared to the reference genome, are one of the essential reasons for genetic variations. These differences that are called structural variations are associated with numerous diseases, including schizophrenia, cancer development, and autism. Therefore, calling these variations is of utmost importance in the next stages of analysis. However, due to computationally intensive tasks of discovering these variations, calling structural variations is lagging behind data produced by sequencers. Hence, discovering these variations with proper accuracy and in a reasonable time is of paramount importance. In this research, we implement a fast, yet accurate,...

Design and Implementation of a Distributed System for Energy Management in a Hybrid-Energy Building

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Javidi Mostafapoor Boshrooyeh, Hamed (Author) ; Goudarzi, Maziar (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Solar panels are still rather expensive equipments. At current electricity prices, it takes several years to return the investment made to install them in a household. Smarter use of their produced energy can help reduce this break-even time, and hence, would motivate more households to be willing to install and use them which would finally result in a more sustainable society with less reliance on fossil fuels. Electricity prices usually differ at different times of day with the common, but unfortunate, property that the price is maximized at evenings when the solar energy production is minimal or non-existent while at the peak production of the solar panels, i.e., around noon, the price is...

Experimental study of the effects of ferrofluid on thermal performance of a pulsating heat pipe

    , Article ASME 2011 9th International Conference on Nanochannels, Microchannels, and Minichannels, ICNMM 2011 ; Volume 1 , 2011 , Pages 435-440 ; 9780791844632 (ISBN) Maziar, M ; Mohammad, M ; Amir, R. G ; Shafii, M. B ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
In this work, a four-turn Pulsating Heat Pipe (PHP) is fabricated and tested experimentally. The novelty of the present PHP is the capability of obtaining various thermal performances at a specific heat input by changing the magnetic field. The effects of working fluid (water and ferrofluid), charging ratio (25%, 40%, and 55%), heat input (25, 35, 45, 55, 65, 75, and 85 W), orientation (vertical and horizontal heat mode), and magnetic field on the thermal performance of PHPs are investigated. The results showed that applying the magnetic field on the water based ferrofluid reduced the thermal resistance of PHP by a factor of 40.5% and 38.3% in comparison with the pure water case for the...

Distributed Processing of Next Generation Sequencing Data Set

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hadadian Nejad Yousefi, Mostafa (Author) ; Goudarzi, Maziar (Supervisor) ; Motahari, Abolfazl (Supervisor)
    Abstract
DNA analysis plays a significant role in fields such as pharmacy, agriculture, genealogy, and forensics. Next generation sequencing datasets cover a gene several times due to a large number of readings. Therefore, the initial data volume is several times the amount of memory required to store the DNA strand. First, the DNA sequence of a sample should be made using the primary data, and then the difference should be found by comparing the sample DNA sequence with the reference DNA sequence. By finding these differences, one can extract the characteristics of the tested species. The extracted properties are precious for genetics researchers. For example, they can produce drugs that are...

Utilizing Metal Oxide as Hole/Electron Injection layer in Hybrid Light Emitting Diode

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Alehdaghi, Hassan (Author) ; Taghavinia, Nima (Supervisor) ; Irajizad, Azam (Supervisor) ; Marandi, Maziar (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) are one of the main subjects of research in the organic electronic advanced technology. There are many advantages for OLEDs like self-emitting, high efficiency, wide vision angle, high contrast, and rapid response time. The main challenge in this area is the long-time stability of performance in air ambiance. Although the encapsulation process could overcome the instability problem, it increases the final cost. In this project, metal oxides have been utilized for the injection of electrons and holes in hybrid light emitting diodes (HyLEDs). In the first stage, inverted structure of HyLEDs with ZnO and MgxZn1-xO layers was fabricated and characterized....

    Abstract
Pulsating Heat Pipes (PHPs) are new and promising heat transfer devices. To implement the novel idea to vary the startup performance of a PHP using ferrofluid with and without the application of magnetic field, an experimental investigation is conducted. The effects of several important parameters including working fluid, charging ratio, heat input, ferrofluid concentration, internal pressure, and application of magnetic field on the startup performance of Open Loop Pulsating Heat Pipes (Open Loop PHPs) have been considered and described in detail. Obtained results show that using ferrofluid instead of distilled water can improve the startup performance of PHPs in certain conditions....
