, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Khalati, Elham (Author) ; Rashtchian, Davood (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Safety integrity level that is a basis for relative risk reduction, is defined by the safety function assessment. Among risk assessment methods, risk graph is known as a qualitative method, which has been used by safety experts due to its simple structure. But this feature doesn't stop them from checking out the structure in a careful way. At first by specifying the basic parameters of the risk graph method, it has been defined that safety and control systems that their functions are independent from alarms and human consciousness, are not considered in this method, so a new parameter has been introduced to show the effects of mentioned control and safety systems. On the other hand, in order...

    Abstract
Frequency estimation of vapor cloud explosions (VCE) are traditionally based on sparse VCE incidents data analysis while process conditions that generate VCE's have a wide spectrum giving VCE's with different strengths. The present paper is focused on developing a systematic methodology to estimate the frequency of VCEs based on process and plant conditions in order to find optimal location of a control room using quantitative risk assessment (QRA). In the presented approach, after classification of plant areas according to variables likely to generate different release conditions, a comprehensive release study is carried out to determine individual probable leakages. Consequently, only...

    , Article Iranian Journal of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering ; Volume 30, Issue 4 , 2011 , Pages 113-119 ; 10219986 (ISSN) Badri, N ; Nourai, F ; Rashtchian, D ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
Safety distance has already been a main easurement for the hazard control of chemical installations interpreted to mean providing space between the hazardous installation and different types of targets. But, the problem is how to determine the enough space. This study considers the application of quantitative risk assessment to evaluating a compressed natural gas station site and to identify nearby land use limitations. In such cases, the most important consideration is to assure that the proposed site would not be incompatible with existing land uses in the vicinity. This scope is possible by categorization of estimated levels of risk imposed by the proposed site. It means that an analysis...

    2013
    Abstract
API Recommended Practice 752 is one of the most referenced practices for evaluating vapor cloud explosion (VCE) impacts to site occupied buildings. This reference introduces generic VCE frequencies for different types of process units that are based on VCE incidents database. Although these reported VCE frequencies are not capable of illustrating all parameters that affect explosion likelihood, they are widely used in risk analysis studies and software packages. This paper delineates the structure of a more realistic method for estimation of local VCE frequencies for independent congested spaces or units as a function of process, site, and meteorological variables. Compared to traditional...

    Abstract
This study considers the application of quantitative risk assessment (QRA) on the siting of compressed natural gas (CNG) stations and determining nearby land use limitations. In such cases the most important consideration is to be assured that the proposed site would not be incompatible with existing land uses in the vicinity. It is possible by the categorization of the estimated levels of individual risk (IR) which the proposed site would impose upon them. An analysis of the consequences and likelihood of credible accident scenarios coupled with acceptable risk criteria is then undertaken. This enables the IR aspects of the proposed site to be considered at an early stage to allow prompt...

Multi-objective design and operation of Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) Triple Combined-cycle Power Generation systems: Integrating energy efficiency and operational safety

    , Article Applied Energy ; Volume 185 , 2017 , Pages 345-361 ; 03062619 (ISSN) Sharifzadeh, M ; Meghdari, M ; Rashtchian, D ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2017
    Abstract
Energy efficiency is one of the main pathways for energy security and environmental protection. In fact, the International Energy Agency asserts that without energy efficiency, 70% of targeted emission reductions are not achievable. Despite this clarity, enhancing the energy efficiency introduce significant challenge toward process operation. The reason is that the methods applied for energy-saving pose the process operation at the intersection of safety constraints. The present research aims at uncovering the trade-off between safe operation and energy efficiency; an optimization framework is developed that ensures process safety and simultaneously optimizes energy-efficiency, quantified in...

Time decomposition in batch process integration

    , Article Chemical Engineering and Processing: Process Intensification ; Volume 45, Issue 1 , 2006 , Pages 14-21 ; 02552701 (ISSN) Pourali, O ; Amidpour, M ; Rashtchian, D ; Sharif University of Technology
    2006
    Abstract
In this work, the concept of problem table decomposition for the thermal integration of continuous processes is extended to batch processes. The approach is based on a combination of time intervals using pinch analysis tools and energy storage system design. Pinch analysis improves energy efficiency for batch processes and it may increase the productivity of a revised plant. Operational and economical constraints may cause some limitation; therefore, in this approach process constraints and flexibilities are carefully considered by defining individual time and heat intervals. The approach is demonstrated on a case study. © 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved
