Harmonic Source Detection and Determination of Customer and Utility Harmonic Contributions at the PCC

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Shojaie, Mehdi (Author) ; Mokhtari, Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Harmonics are of the most important issues associated with electric power quality. Non-linear loads such as power electronic converters are harmonic-producing devices in a network. Due to negative impacts of harmonics such as increased losses and reduced life of network equipment, harmonic analysis of a polluted network, is an essential task. Furthermore, harmonic source identification in order to trace harmonics in a network and adequate implementation of harmonic mitigation techniques is also important. Harmonic contribution determination of a customer at a point of common coupling (PCC) is subjected to difficulties such as harmonic voltage and current interactions, unknown customer and...

A Reconfigurable Architecture Using Non-voltatile Memories

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ahari, Ali (Author) ; Asadi, Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In recent years, emerging Non-Volatile Memories (NVMs) have become promising alternatives for existing memory technologies. Due to shortcomings of SRAM memory in nanometer era,NVMs such as Phase-Change Memory (PCM) can be used in configuration memories of Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). Despite prominent features of emerging NVMs, they suffer from high write-power, high write-latency, and limited number of reliable write opera-tions. In addition, a dedicated Peripheral Circuit (PC) which is required to convert the NVM state to the equivalent voltage level can impose significant area and power overheads to FPGAs.In this thesis, a reliable power-efficient hybrid architecture employing...

Hybrid Modeling and Control of Voltage Source Inverters

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mazaheri, Behnam (Author) ; Mokhtari, Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Modeling and control of power electronic converters, due to their non-linear nature, are from important research subjects in power electronics. Power electronic systems contain both continuous-time dynamics and discrete-time inputs, and therefore, are categorized as hybrid systems. Conventionally, modeling and control of hybrid systems is done by linearizing and state-space averaging. However, these methods do not guaranty well operation of the system over a wide range of load or input variation. In this project, by employingMLD modeling method, a model for an inverter which is connected to a three-phase RL load through an LC filter, is derived. Then, this model is used in an optimization...

Persian Statistical Natural Language Understanding Based on Partially Annotated Corpus

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Jabbari, Fattaneh (Author) ; Sameti, Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Spoken language understanding unit is one of the most important parts of a spoken dialogue system. The input of this system is the output of speech recognition unit. The main function of this unit is to extract the semantic information from the input utterances. There are two main types of approaches to do this task: rule-based approaches, and data-driven approaches. Today data-driven approaches are of more interest because they are more flexible and robust compared to the rule-based approaches. The main drawback of these methods is that they need a large amount of fully annotated or in some cases Treebank data. Preparing such data is time consuming and expensive. The goal of this thesis is...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ghasri, Milad (Author) ; Poorzahedy, Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
This study is an endeavor to model the interaction between transportation and land use, as a constituent of a joint land use-network design problem defined in the context of transit oriented development (TOD). Population and employment follow a Garin-Lowry model; the endogenously determined transportation demand is administered by a joint mode choice-assignment model; and mode choice is governed by a logit model. Equilibrium of population choice of place of residence, employment choice of place of retailing, and passenger choice of mode and path, are all governed by a maximum utility principle. An algorithm is devised to reach these equilibrium states by an evolutionary process, whose engine...

Harmonic Modelling of Residential Loads and Their Effects on Distribution Network

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Karimi, Elham (Author) ; Mokhtari, Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In recent years, there has been an increasing concern about harmonic distortion and the effects of harmonics on power systems. Nonlinear loads such as electronic power supplies, battery chargers, motor drives, UPS systems and … are the primary source of harmonic currents. Harmonic currents generated by nonlinear loads flow from the load into the power system due to the network low path of impedance Harmonic currents cause additional heat and losses in power system components and results in voltage distortion as well.To deal with the problems associated with harmonics and to reduce their effects on power networks, study of the effects of non-linear loads on distribution networks is essential....

Performance Enhancement of Enterprise Storage Systems Using a Markov-Based Prefetching Method

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Sereshki, Sina (Author) ; Asadi, Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
With increasing rate of digital information in the world, design, configuration, and networking of enterprise storage systems has become an essential part in designing data centers. The performance of data storage systems in serving incoming requests is one of the major parameters of such systems. A major metric to measure performance is response time. This parameter is, in particular, crucial in enterprise applications such as financial, credit, multimedia, and real-time applications. A common approach to enhance the performance of enterprise storage systems is improving the hit ratio of the system global memory using prefetching technique. Using prefetching technique, a data block is...

Management of Storage Resources, Power, and Performance in Enterprise Storage Systems Using Prefetching Method

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ramezani, Kaveh (Author) ; Asadi, Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Nowadays, enterprise storage systems are widely used in data centers such as databases, servers, and bank institutes. Due to mechanical activity of disk drives, these systems are one of the most power consumptive components in data centers. Prefetching and RAID, which are employed to enhance performance, are widely used in data storage systems. These two methods, however, impose significant energy overhead to the system due to the increased disk activity. In this thesis, we first elaborate shortcomings of prefetching and RAID methods. Then, we propose a new energy efficient and RAID-compatible prefetching method (LPTAP), which aims at improving performance and energy consumption. To evaluate...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mohammadi, Ali (Author) ; Poorzahedy, Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Road construction and maintenance constitute a significant part of country-wide infrastructure development budget each year. This indicates the importance of planning and design of individual road alignment in reducing the development cost. This study presents a meta-heuristic algorithm based on the concept of electromagnetism, which explores and finds a good route between two given points within a three-dimensional (3-D) context. It defines the region in a continuous 3-D surface, identifies initial routes, which are directed and shaped toward better positions by the help of local and global search. The final good solution is fine-tuned to produce a better alignment. The behaviour of the...

Speaker Adaptation in Eigen Voice Space for Statistical Parametric Speech Syntheis

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Shams, Boshra (Author) ; Sameti, Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Recently various speaker adaptation methods in HMM-based speech synthesis are proposed. The importance of adaptation techniques is that we can design a system in which speech is generated with high quality and target speaker characteristics through limited adaptation data sets.
In this research, we focus on adaptation based on clustering and develop a new and novel method using eigenvoices in order to adapt a new speaker. We employ this approach for the first time in HSMM-based speech synthesis systems and its goal is to reduce the parameters and adaptation data of the system. In our proposed method, first some speaker dependent models are trained. For each model we combine the...

Evaluating Impact of Erasure Codes on Performance and Endurance of SSD-Based RAID Array

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Delavari, Ziba (Author) ; Asadi, Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Performance and reliability are the major concerns in design of data storage systems. Using Redundant Array of Independent Disks (RAID) can enhance both performance and reliability. A commonly used configuration in RAID arrays is erasure codes to further enhance system reliability. Due to promising advantages of Solid-State Drives (SSDs)such as low power, shock resistance, and high I/O performance, designers have been encouraged to replace Hard Disk Drives (HDDs) by SSDs in RAID arrays. SSDs, however, suffer from limited endurance due to erase-before-write operation. In this thesis, we investigate the effect of stripe unite size and the number of disks of a RAID array on the endurance of SSDs...

Telephony Text-Independent Speaker Verification in Total Variability Space

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mirian, Alireza (Author) ; Sameti, Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Given two speech segments, the task of speaker verification is defined as determining whether or not both of them have been uttered by the same person. Most of the new approaches in speaker verification are based on Total Variability Space which is the result of applying a factor analysis on GMM mean supervector space. The representation of speech with arbitrary duration in this space is called i-vector.
In this thesis, first the basics of speaker verification is described and i-vector approaches are explained in more details. Then, a method for improving accuracy of Cosine Similarity Scoring is proposed which normalize the raw score using the score of test utterance against a model- and...

Speaker Verification using Limited Enrollment Data

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Kalantari, Elaheh (Author) ; Sameti, Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis, we investigate speaker verification as a biometric technology to verify a person based on his/her claim. Text-dependent speaker verification systems are preferred in commercial and security applications and these systems have better performance in limited data condition based on a prior knowledge about speakers that are assumed to be cooperative. Limited amount of enrollment data is a major concern in this thesis. Speaker dependent model construction and channel variability issues on telephone-based text-dependent speaker verification applications are surveyed. Due to the lack of an appropriate database for the task, we collected a database which is referred to as text-prompt...

A Land Use-Transportation Model with Optimal Strategy Algorithm for Evaluating Transit-Oriented Development Decisions

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Azadnia, Alireza (Author) ; Pourzahedi, Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
There is a two-way relationship between land use and transportation. So each of them can be used to manage and control the other one. Land use can be Auto-Oriented, or Transit-Oriented. Auto-Oriented Development leads to urban sprawl, causing longer trips and increasing use of private cars. Problems related to this type of development appeared by the end of the 20th century. On the other hand, Transit-Oriented Development may lead to higher density areas, and higher transit use, providing better space for pedestrians and cyclists, as well as increasing environmental pollutions. Land use-transportation relationship hs been the subject of many recent studies. One of the previous models...

Improving the Training Process of Understanding Unit in Spoken Dialog Systems Using Active Learning Methods

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hadian, Hossein (Author) ; Sameti, Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
This thesis aims at reducing the need for labeled data in the SLU domain by the means of active Learning methods. This need is due to the lack of labeled datasets for Spoken Language Understanding (SLU) in the Persian language, and fairly high labeling costs. Active learning methods enables the learner to choose the most informative instances to be labeled and used for training, and prevents labeling uninformative or redundant instances. For modeling the SLU system, several statistical models namely MLN (Markov Logic Networks), CRF (Conditional Random Fields), HMM (Hidden Markov Model) and HVS (Hidden Vector State) were reviewed, and finally CRF was chosen for its superior performance. The...
