A Study of the Phase Diagram of the Hubbard Model Using Modern Numerical Methods

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Manavi, Alireza (Author) ; Vaezi, Mir Abolhassan (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The Hubbard model is one of the simplest interacting models in theoretical physics, especially condensed matter physics which despite its simplicity, its solutions are highly nontrivial and intractable. After 5 decades since its introduction, its phase diagram is not fully understood and whether or not, it has a high-temperature superconducting phase. In this thesis, we aim to employ the recent advances in machine learning and GPU programming to accelerate the QMC method. By accelerated QMC methods, we can explore the Hubbard model's phase diagram more efficiently. Using massive parallelization of the GPUs can speed up the measuring process by several times. The self-learning quantum...

Estimation of Gasoline Demand Elasticity in Iran

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Tavakoli, Amir Hossein (Author) ; Rahmati, Mohammad Hossein (Supervisor) ; Vesal, Mohammad ($item.subfieldsMap.e)
    Abstract
The price elasticity of gasoline demand is a key parameter in evaluation of various policy options. However, most of the literature uses aggregate data to identify this elasticity. Temporal and spatial aggregation make elasticity estimates unreliable. We employ a unique dataset of all gasoline transactions in Iran during a four-month period around an unexpected exogenous price change to identify price elasticity. After controlling for date and individual fixed effects we estimate a robust significant price elasticity of -0.127. Aggregation of the same data by week, month, and city yields an estimate of -0.3 indicating a significant bias in earlier studies. We also identify a significant...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Asadi, Mohammad Reza (Author) ; Jahangir, Amir Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Recently, security of integrated circuits has received more attention as ICs have become more complex and their usage has increased in safety critical systems. Many orgeniaztions use the ICs that made by third party companies. This is due to the high costs to build and maintain state-of-the-art semiconductor factories. This subject puts the trustworthiness of the ICs under the question. The chips might be maliciously modified in each stage of the manufacturing chain. This threat is called hardware backdoor in scientific community. The aim of this project is to assess the features embedded in a microprocessor and evaluate the side channel effect of various hardware backdoors. hardware...

Modeling of Hydraulic Fracture Propagation in Naturally Fractured Saturated Poruos Media Using the XFEM Method

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hirmand, Mohammad Reza (Author) ; Khoei, Amir Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Hydraulic fracture propagation occures in fractured saturated porous media due to fluid leakage from the crack faces and the consequent fluid pressure. In many cases, hydraulic fracturing may be considered as a detrimental phenomenon which endangers stability of human made structures like rock-fill dames. However, in recent decades the hydraulic fracturing has been an appealing method for increasing the production rate of low-permeability oil and gas reservoirs in petroleum industries.
In order to efficiently assess the behavior of saturated madia one needs to consider the coupling between the solid and fluid phases of the medium. To do so, the coupled formulation refered to as u-p...

Numerical Simulation and Analysis of Electrokinetic Micromixer

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Raffiee, Amir Hossein (Author) ; Saidi, Mohammad Said (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Lab-On-A-Chip is a micro-scale system which utilizes specific tools in order to operate detection tests on samples. One of the most important components of these devices is micromixers which is responsible for appropriate mixing of samples in short period of time. The biggest problem associated to the mixing in micro-scale is the regime that the flow takes during the process. Due to the small dimensions of micromixers the induced flow stream resides in the range of laminar flows and consequently the mixing is conducted solely by diffusion mechanism which is either time-taking or requires long micro-channel that causes the high cost of fabrication. In order to improve the mixing process two...

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Jafarieh, Amir Hossein (Author) ; Ghannad, Mohammad Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
It is well-known that the behavior of soil-structure systems can be well described using a limited number of non-dimensional parameters. This is the outcome of researches based on the premise that the foundation is bonded to the ground. Here, it is shown the concept can be extended to systems with foundation uplift. A set of non-dimensional parameters are introduced which controls the main features of uplifting systems. The super-structure is modeled as an equivalent single-degree of freedom system with elastic behavior mounted on a rigid foundation resting on distributed tensionless Winkler springs and dampers. The effect of foundation uplift on response of soil-structure systems are...

Hardware/Software Codesign of Network Router Inspired by Software-Defined Network

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ansari, Mohammad Saeed (Author) ; Jahangir, Amir Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
There is a plethora of research and implementations that intend to increase the performance and reduce implementation costs of network routers. In this work, we review previous designs and propose a new network router design that is based on software-defined networks. Our design separates the data plane and the control plane from each other and connects both parts by using OpenFlow protocol. The control plane consists of a general small computer that utilizes the Quagga software to enforce the routing protocols. The control plane translates routing decisions to OpenFlow instructions and sends them to the data plane. The data plane is based on a switch that supports the OpenFlow protocol...
