Feeder growth: a new method for automatic optimal feeder design in gravity casting processes

    , Article Structural and Multidisciplinary Optimization ; Volume 39, Issue 5 , 2009 , Pages 519-530 ; 1615147X (ISSN) Tavakoli, R ; Davami, P ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
The optimal feeder design in gravity casting processes is considered. The design problem is formulated as an additive, growth-like, evolutionary topology optimization problem. The initial design of the presented method is a casting part which is placed in a suitable environmental mould box. The method is composed of three stages: determining the feeder-neck connection point on the casting surface, constructing the feeder-neck and the feeder growth. During the growth stage, the feeder topology is changed gradually until satisfying some predefined criteria. The design of multiple feeders is also considered in this work. In the presented method, feeders are designed in a descending order of...

    Abstract
Pulse laser ablation (PLA) technique has been demonstrated to be a simple, compatible, promising, versatile, relatively low-cost, pure, and green approach with the absence of toxic chemicals and reagents for fabrication of metal nanoparticles. Purity is an especially important attribute of metal nanoparticles (NPs) in biological and medical technologies. For such applications, it is crucial to prepare metal NPs with the desired shape and size distribution. This chapter discusses the advantages of the PLA technique as compared with other techniques for metal NPs, explains the various mechanisms involved in the generation of metal NPs, outlines the effects of laser parameters, such as...

Numerical modeling of shear band propagation in porous plastic dilatant materials by XFEM

    , Article Theoretical and Applied Fracture Mechanics ; Volume 95 , 2018 , Pages 164-176 ; 01678442 (ISSN) Mikaeili, E ; Liu, P ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2018
    Abstract
This paper studies mixed-mode shear band propagation behaviors in porous plastic dilatant materials by the extended finite element method (XFEM). The Drucker-Prager elastoplastic model is combined with the strong discontinuity method to simulate the dilatant shear band. First, the dissipative nature of the localized area with displacement jump is integrated into the constitutive model by introducing a cohesive law. A new contribution lies that the yielding function is modified in the localized region to calculate the cohesive traction within the framework of the XFEM. The shear band propagation direction is determined by the singularity of the acoustic tensor and the corresponding...

American options with asymmetric information and reflected BSDE

    , Article Bernoulli ; Volume 24, Issue 2 , May , 2018 , Pages 1394-1426 ; 13507265 (ISSN) Esmaeeli, N ; Imkeller, P ; Sharif University of Technology
    International Statistical Institute  2018
    Abstract
We consider an American contingent claim on a financial market where the buyer has additional information. Both agents (seller and buyer) observe the same prices, while the information available to them may differ due to some extra exogenous knowledge the buyer has. The buyer's information flow is modeled by an initial enlargement of the reference filtration. It seems natural to investigate the value of the American contingent claim with asymmetric information. We provide a representation for the cost of the additional information relying on some results on reflected backward stochastic differential equations (RBSDE). This is done by using an interpretation of prices of American contingent...

Using approximate similitude to design dynamic similar models

    , Article Aerospace Science and Technology ; Volume 94 , 2019 ; 12709638 (ISSN) Banazadeh, A ; Hajipouzadeh, P ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Masson SAS  2019
    Abstract
This research deals with the analysis of approximate similitude between the dynamic similar models and the full-scale prototype of an aircraft. Due to physical and technical constraints, a full dynamic similarity is not practically possible and previous works have all neglected one or two similarity criteria like Mach or Reynolds numbers for the sake of Froude number similarity. In this work, it is shown that Mach number has an important effect on aerodynamic characteristics and dynamic response of an aircraft and that neglecting it makes the generalization of the scale-model test data invalid for the full-scale prototype. In order to address this problem, a measurable quantity named...

An online portfolio selection algorithm using clustering approaches and considering transaction costs

    , Article Expert Systems with Applications ; Volume 159 , November , 2020 Khedmati, M ; Azin, P ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2020
    Abstract
This paper presents an online portfolio selection algorithm based on pattern matching principle where it makes a decision on the optimal portfolio in each period and updates the optimal portfolio at the beginning of each period. The proposed method consists of two steps: i) sample selection, ii) portfolio optimization. First, in the sample selection, clustering algorithms including k-means, k-medoids, spectral and hierarchical clustering are applied to discover time windows (TW) similar to the recent time window. Then, after finding the similar time windows and predicting the market behavior of the next day, the optimum function along with the transaction cost is used in the portfolio...

Investigating potential benefits of a salinity gradient solar pond for ejector refrigeration cycle coupled with a thermoelectric generator

    Elsevier Ltd  2019
    Abstract
Extraction of thermal heat from a salinity-gradient solar pond (SGSP) as a way of accumulating solar energy, stockpiling and taking merit of it for medium and low temperature demands is presented as an interesting topic in recent decades. This reliable supply of heat can be used for low-temperature refrigeration systems to yield cooling load for residential applications. For this purpose, theoretical investigation of ejector refrigeration cycle (ERC) driven by a SGSP is carried out to produce cooling output. Also, thermoelectric generator (TEG) is used as a potential device replacing condenser of the ERC for the sake of bolstering performance of the fundamental system by producing power,...

Saturated hydraulic conductivity of problematic soils measured by a newly developed low-compliance triaxial permeameter

    , Article Engineering Geology ; Volume 278 , 2020 Sadeghi, H ; AliPanahi, P ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2020
    Abstract
Research on the reliable characterization of saturated permeability has received great yet necessary attention globally. However, most studies were carried out on soils with a volumetric tendency being almost insensitive to water saturation or at least with this hidden assumption. This is clearly not the case when dealing with the two broad categories of problematic soils, including collapsible and expansive soils. As confirmed by previous research, at least one-fifth of the planet comprises of these soils with a relatively fair distribution. Therefore, the main objective of this study is to introduce a low-compliance double cell/burette permeameter to track all volumetric changes during the...

    Abstract
Redundancy technique is used to improve performance and achieving to increase the lifetime of a system. Nowadays, the redundancy method is applied in many industries. One of the common methods of redundancy is its utilization in the switching systems. In switching systems, one or more components are considered active mode and the others in the standby state to be used by switch if necessary. In order to be fully utilized all the components in the redundant device, the switch unit must perform its function, such as switching, perfectly. Successful coverage by switch unit is expressed with a probability. In this paper, a new approach to the likelihood of switch success is proposed, and showing...

Design and operation of a double-fiber displacement sensor

    , Article Optics Communications ; Volume 281, Issue 4 , 2008 , Pages 614-620 ; 00304018 (ISSN) Golnabi, H ; Azimi, P ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
Design and operation of a double-fiber sensor for displacement measurements are reported in this study. In this arrangement, one fiber transmits the laser light to the target and the second one receives the light reflected off the target and transmits to a photodetector. Utilizing inexpensive plastic optical fibers offers advantages such as higher reflexability and more robustness at a reasonable cost, which are required for some applications. The novelties of the reported design are compactness of the fiber probe, flexibility, long dynamic range (22 mm), and it is possible to use the source and the detector at the same side. The displacement of the target causes the intensity modulation and...

    Abstract
A method for automatic optimal feeder design in steel casting processes is presented. The initial design is the casting part (without feeders) which is placed in a suitable mold box. Design of each feeder contains the following steps: determination of the feeder-neck connection point on the casting surface, initial feeder design, feeder shape optimization and feeder topology optimization. Completing designing the first feeder, the method attends to designing the next one, if it is required, and the same procedure will be repeated. In the presented method, feeders are designed in a descending order of their sizes. The feasibility of the presented method is supported with an illustrative...

A novel multi-access scheme for UWB-PPM communication systems

    , Article European Transactions on Telecommunications ; Volume 18, Issue 4 , 2007 , Pages 389-401 ; 1124318X (ISSN) Khani, H ; Azmi, P ; Sharif University of Technology
    2007
    Abstract
In this paper, it is shown that some spikes exist in power spectral density (PSD) of ultra-wideband-time-hopping-pulse-position-modulation (UWB-TH-PPM) transmitted signal. Analytical and numerical simulation results show that these spikes severely degrade UWB-TH-PPM system bit-error-rate performance and must be properly removed. This paper proposes a novel multi-access scheme that uses both direct-sequence (DS) and time-hopping (TH) multi-access schemes to remove these harmful spikes. Analytical and numerical simulation results show that the proposed scheme removes the spikes from the PSD of the UWB-TH-PPM transmitted signal and yields better performance. In this paper, the performance of...

    , Article Applied Mathematics and Computation ; Volume 188, Issue 2 , 2007 , Pages 1184-1192 ; 00963003 (ISSN) Tavakoli, R ; Davami, P ; Sharif University of Technology
    2007
    Abstract
Recently various versions of alternating group explicit or alternating group explicit-implicit methods were proposed for solution of diffusion equation. The main benefits of these methods are: good stability, accuracy and parallelizing. But these methods were developed for 1D case and stability and accuracy were investigated for 1D case too. In the present study we extend the new group explicit method [R. Tavakoli, P. Davami, New stable group explicit finite difference method for solution of diffusion equation, Appl. Math. Comput. 181 (2006) 1379-1386] to 2D with operator splitting method. The implementation of method is discussed in details. Our numerical experiment shows that such 2D...

A new parallel Gauss-Seidel method based on alternating group explicit method and domain decomposition method

    , Article Applied Mathematics and Computation ; Volume 188, Issue 1 , 2007 , Pages 713-719 ; 00963003 (ISSN) Tavakoli, R ; Davami, P ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
A new parallel Gauss-Seidel method is presented for solution of system of linear equations related to finite difference discretization of partial differential equations. This method is based on domain decomposition method and local coupling between interfaces of neighbor sub-domains, same as alternating group explicit method. This method is convergent and number of iterations for achieving convergence criteria is near the original Gauss-Seidel method (sometimes better and sometimes worse but difference is very small). The convergence theory is discussed in details. Numerical results are given to justify the convergence and performance of the proposed iterative method. © 2006 Elsevier Inc....

An algorithm for finding a feasible solution of graph labeling problems

    , Article Utilitas Mathematica ; Volume 72 , 2007 , Pages 163-174 ; 03153681 (ISSN) Eshghi, K ; Azimi, P ; Sharif University of Technology
    2007
    Abstract
A labeling (or valuation) of a graph G = (V, E) is a map that carries graph elements to numbers (usually to the positive or non-negative integers). The two famous labeling methods are called graceful labeling and edge-magic total labeling. A function f is called a graceful labeling of graph G with m edges if f is an injection from the vertices of G to the set {0, 1,...,m} such that when each edge (x, y) is assigned the label |f(x) - f(y)|, the resulting edge labels are distinct. An edge-magic total labeling is another well-known labeling that was motivated by the notion of magic squares in number theory. Despite the large number of papers published on the subject of graph labeling, there are...

Unconditionally stable fully explicit finite difference solution of solidification problems

    , Article Metallurgical and Materials Transactions B: Process Metallurgy and Materials Processing Science ; Volume 38, Issue 1 , 2007 , Pages 121-142 ; 10735615 (ISSN) Tavakoli, R ; Davami, P ; Sharif University of Technology
    2007
    Abstract
An unconditionally stable fully explicit finite difference method for solution of conduction dominated phase-change problems is presented. This method is based on an asymmetric stable finite difference scheme for approximation of diffusion terms and application of the temperature recovery method as a phase-change modeling method. The computational cost of the presented method is the same as the explicit method per time-step, while it is free from time-step limitation due to stability criteria. It robustly handles isothermal and nonisothermal phase-change problems and is very efficient when the global temperature field is desirable (not accurate front position). The robustness, stability,...

Reliability analysis of notched plates under anisotropic damage based on uniaxial loading using continuum damage mechanics approach

    , Article International Journal of Engineering, Transactions A: Basics ; Volume 34, Issue 1 , 2021 , Pages 253-262 ; 17281431 (ISSN) Nadjafi, M ; Gholami, P ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Extensive recent researches have been underway to model the fracture mechanics degradation based on continuum damage mechanics (CDM) technique. CDM theory is a powerful tool for solving problems such as large plastic deformations that the fracture mechanics is unable to solve. This model is derived by means of the thermodynamics internal variable theory and based on the experimental results on material properties. In this paper, the reliability of rectangular plates containing a central circular hole under static tensile load using the CDM approach for ductile fracture has been studied. To investigate the initiation and evolution of damages, anisotropic damage expressed by second order...

Reliability study of notched composite laminates under uniaxial loading based on continuum damage mechanics approach

    Abstract
The probability of failure estimation of composite structures under applied loads is an inevitable requirement given the uncertainties related to the material properties, loads, and boundary conditions. The properties of composite materials have more scatter due to non-homogeneity and anisotropic characteristics, and manufacturing defects. In this paper, the reliability of S2-Glass/Epoxy laminate composite materials containing a central circular hole under static tensile load is presented. Failure in fiber-reinforced plastic structures, since individual faults in each ply cannot be traced, is a random process due to the scatter caused by the behavior of the material. According to the...
