In order to study of oil and water separation efficiency, mixtures of water and naphtha with different content of naphtha were used. Separation test for 200μm St.St mesh in different slopes demonstrated that changing of slop increase separation efficiency up to 95.5% for water and up to 100% for naphtha. Separation test for meshes with different pore size demonstrated that meshes with small pore size are more appropriate for...

Lensing as a probe of early universe: From CMB to galaxies

    , Article Journal of Cosmology and Astroparticle Physics ; Volume 2016, Issue 5 , 2016 ; 14757516 (ISSN) Hassani, F ; Baghram, S ; Firouzjahi, H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) radiation lensing is a promising tool to study the physics of early universe. In this work we probe the imprints of deviations from isotropy and scale invariance of primordial curvature perturbation power spectrum on CMB lensing potential and convergence. Specifically, we consider a scale-dependent hemispherical asymmetry in primordial power spectrum. We show that the CMB lensing potential and convergence and also the cross-correlation of the CMB lensing and late time galaxy convergence can probe the amplitude and the scale dependence of the dipole modulation. As another example, we consider a primordial power spectrum with local feature. We show that...

Modeling and Solution Algorithm for Multi-Path Railroad Blocking Problem under Demand and Travel Time Uncertainty

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Mohammad Hassani, Reza (Author) ; Shafahi, Yousef (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The railroad blocking problem emerges as an important issue at the tactical level of planning in freight rail transportation. This problem consists of determining the paths of each shipment which minimize the total cost subject to the key constraints such as limitation on travel time, limitation on number of dispatched trains, and limitation on the number of cars classified at each station. The multi-path railroad blocking model is developed and then a new heuristic algorithm based on the Lagrangian relaxation technique to solve the realistic rail network is introduced. To consider the uncertainty which is inherent in the demand and travel time (as a supply indicator of rail system), a...

    Digital quantum estimation

    , Article Physical Review Letters ; Volume 119, Issue 20 , 2017 ; 00319007 (ISSN) Hassani, M ; Macchiavello, C ; Maccone, L ; Sharif University of Technology
    2017
    Abstract
Quantum metrology calculates the ultimate precision of all estimation strategies, measuring what is their root-mean-square error (RMSE) and their Fisher information. Here, instead, we ask how many bits of the parameter we can recover; namely, we derive an information-theoretic quantum metrology. In this setting, we redefine "Heisenberg bound" and "standard quantum limit" (the usual benchmarks in the quantum estimation theory) and show that the former can be attained only by sequential strategies or parallel strategies that employ entanglement among probes, whereas parallel-separable strategies are limited by the latter. We highlight the differences between this setting and the RMSE-based...

    Abstract
Application of the colloidal gas aphrons (CGAs) in minimizing formation damage by plugging pore mechanism is now wildly accepted due to numerous successful field experience. One of the pivotal factors which affects the pore blockage ability of micro-bubbles is their stability. This experimental study tries to investigate the possible synergistic effect of nanoparticles on improving the stability and other properties of non-aqueous CGA drilling fluids, in both bulk and porous media. In particular, two types of hydrophobic nanoparticles including silicon dioxide nanopowder coated with 2 wt% Silane and nanoclay, in presence of a treated version of bentonite (Bentone 34) as a stabilizer and...

Regarding the aforementioned, the study of multiple satellites control methods is the subject of the present paper. In this paper, two linear robust control strategies are applied to position control system of certain satellites in the virtual structure formation flight. The proposed controllers are designed considering different parametric uncertainties such as semimajor axis and eccentricity changes as well as some disturbances like second term of gravitational acceleration function (j2) and drag...

Harvesting of Aquatic Clean Energy from Vortex Induced Vibration Using Two Degree Of Freedom Cylindrical Oscillator and Piezoelectric

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hassani Fakhrabadi, Pouria (Author) ; Raie, Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Vortex-induced vibration is a known phenomenon in fluids flow that is being studied in different fields of engineering and usually, we want to reduce the harmful effects of this phenomenon on the subjected structures. Also, it is possible to use this phenomenon for harvesting clean energy from fluids flow. Energy harvesting from vortex-induced vibrations is based on the maximizing of flow instead of its reduction, and the utilization of these vibrations instead of their suppression. Vortex induced vibrations occur in any ranges of Reynolds numbers. Only in three transient regions cause a reduction in vortex-induced vibrations; therefore, even in streams with a velocity less than 0.2 m/s, it...

    Abstract
In this paper, we propose a new modeling approach for analytical evaluation of normalized throughput and average backoff time for IEEE 802.11 MAC standard in non-saturation mode and with Poisson arrivals. To this end, we map different stages of distributed coordinated function (DCF) onto different components of a closed multi-class BCMP queueing network with arbitrary service time distribution. At the last part of the paper, we illustrate the applicability of the proposed approach by some numerical results in both saturation and non-saturation modes and obtain average backoff time for different arrival rates. © 2007 IEEE

Bayesian reliability-based robust design optimization of mechanical systems under both aleatory and epistemic uncertainties

    , Article Engineering Optimization ; 2022 ; 0305215X (ISSN) Hassani, H ; Khodaygan, S ; Ghaderi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Taylor and Francis Ltd  2022
    Abstract
Uncertainties can be divided into two general categories: aleatory and epistemic. Conventional reliability-based robust design optimization approaches, which disregard epistemic uncertainties due to lack of knowledge about the physical nature of systems, have previously been developed. To overcome this weakness, unlike previous methods, a Bayesian reliability-based robust design optimization method is proposed in the presence of both aleatory and epistemic uncertainties. The proposed formulation is presented as a multi-objective optimization problem. The univariate dimension reduction method is used to approximate the mean and variance of the design function. The non-dominated sorting...

Stock Market Prediction Using Textual Data from News and Social Networks

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hassani, Kourosh (Author) ; Akhavan Niaki, Taghi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
One of the influential factors affecting the future price trends of a stock is the public sentiment surrounding that particular stock. In recent years, researchers have employed Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques to analyze textual data present on social networks, aiming to investigate public opinions. However, there has been limited attention given to validating the users expressing opinions concerning the stock market. Much of the opinions shared on social networks lack a thorough examination and analysis of the market, often being solely based on the author's sentiments. This research endeavors to validate active users on the social network 'X' (Twitter) by developing a...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Molla Khalili, Ahmad (Author) ; Ranjbar Motlagh, Alireza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The development of intrinsic theories for area-minimization problems was motivated in the 1950 by the diffichlty to prove, existence for the Plateau problem for surfaces in Euclidean spaces of dimension higher than two. After the pioneering work of R. Caccioppoli and E. De Giorgi on set with finite perimeter, W. H. Fleming and H. Federer developed the theory of currents, which leads to existence results for the Plateau problem for oriented surfaces of any dimension and codimension. The aim of this paper is to develop an existence of the Federer-Fleming theory to spaces without a differentiable structure, and virtually to any complete metric space. The starting point of our research has been...

    , Article Materials Science and Technology (United Kingdom) ; Volume 30, Issue 2 , February , 2014 , Pages 220-226 ; ISSN: 02670836 Ranjbar Motlagh, S ; Maghsoudi, M. H ; Serajzadeh, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    2014
    Abstract
In this present work, the softening behaviour of Cu-1·1 wt-%Al2O3 alloy containing nanometric alumina particles was investigated. Single pass equal channel angular pressing was first applied on cylindrical specimens, and then, the deformed samples were subjected to annealing treatments in the temperature range of 700-1000°C. Afterwards, finite element analysis, microstructural observations, Vickers hardness and shear punch testing were employed to study strain distribution as well as the recrystallisation behaviour of the examined alloy. It was found that the alloy is softened at 800°C or above, which shows its high thermal stability. Furthermore, a very fine completely recrystallised...

Ground Squeezing Effects on the Analysis and Design of Tunnels

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Amini Motlagh, Peyman (Author) ; Sadaghiani, Mohammad Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Ground squeezing is defined as time-dependent shear displacement of rock mass that causes the decrease of the calculated excavation area of tunnels.Ground squeezing is one of the phenomenons that causes serious problems including the collapse of tunnels’ walls and TBM jamming during the construction of tunnels. Hence, the assessment of ground squeezing is an essential issue in tunneling. In this thesis, different ground squeezing potential prediction methods will be assessed. These methods consist of empirical, semi-emperical, analytical, and numerical methods. After assessing the ground squeezing potential, if it is evaluated high for a project, it will be required to consider the...

    Abstract
Suppose $X$ is a locally compcat Hausdorf‌f space. We denote by $C_0(X)$ the Banach space of all continuous functions real or complex-valued def‌ined on $X$ which vanish at inf‌inity, equipped with the supremum norm. Suppose linear subspace $A$ of $C_0(X)$ is strongly separating, that is, for all pair of distinct points $x_1,x_2 \in X$, there exists $f \in A$ such that $|f(x_1)|\neq |f(x_2)|$. In this thesis, we show that Shilov boundary of $A$ exists and is closure Choquet boundary of $A$. Furthermore, \ we show that a linear isometry $T$ of $A$ onto such a subspace $B$ of $C_0(Y)$ induces a homeomorphism $h$ between two certain subspaces of the Shilov boundaries of $B$ and $A$, sending the...

    Abstract
Today, cloud computing has developed as one of the important emergent technologies in communication and Internet. It offers on demand, pay per use access to infrastructure, platforms, and applications. Due to the increase in its popularity, the huge number of requests need to be handled in an efficient manner. Task scheduling as one of the challenges in the cloud computing supports the requests for assigning a particular resource so as to perform effectively. In the resource management, task scheduling is performed where there is the dependency between tasks. Many approaches and case studies have been developed for the scheduling of these tasks. Up to now, a systematic literature review...
