    Abstract
In this paper, the participation of wind farms in load frequency control (LFC) is studied. A previously proposed macromodel for the wind farm is employed to regulate its output power. The wind farm including its proposed control strategy is incorporated into the conventional LFC model. The proposed LFC structure is able to dynamically maintain the system frequency at the nominal value against the power imbalances. To achieve proper transient response, the integral control parameter of the LFC controller is optimized using the genetic algorithm (GA). To verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, several simulation case studies are carried out. The results show that the wind farm can...

    Abstract
Application of Fractional Order PID (FOPID) controller to an Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR) is presented and studied in this paper. An FOPID is a PID whose derivative and integral orders are fractional numbers rather than integers. Design stage of such a controller consists of determining five parameters. This paper employs Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm to carry out the aforementioned design procedure. A novel cost function is defined to facilitate the control strategy over both the time-domain and the frequencydomain specifications. Comparisons are made with a PID controller from standpoints of transient response, robustness and disturbance rejection characteristics. It is...

Introduction of Coreless Self-Centering Braces and Optimized Design Method

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Attari Dezfuli, Mohammad (Author) ; Mofid, Masoud (Supervisor) ; Mohtasham Dolatshahi, Kiarash (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Conventional lateral resisting systems can provide sufficient strength and ductility for design based earthquakes, although the considerable residual deformation remaining in the plasticized regions undermines the resiliency of the structures. In order to resolve this problem, various self-centering systems have been proposed and tested in recent years, most of which are specified for new buildings and are not simply suitable for retrofitting applications. Moreover, the available self-centering systems are costly and complex to assemble, which can be considered as a serious barrier for practical application. To address these drawbacks, an innovative core-less self-centering (CLSC) brace is...

    , Article Journal of Lightwave Technology ; Volume 25, Issue 4 , 2007 , Pages 1095-1106 ; 07338724 (ISSN) Tabataba, F. S ; Aghajanzadeh, S. M ; Nasiri Kenari, M ; Karimi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2007
    Abstract
We consider an internally coded time-hopping coherent ultrashort light pulse code division multiple access scheme (TH-CULP CDMA) and analyze its performance in the fiber-optic communication systems. This system combines the TH and CULP CDMA techniques and exploits the advantages of both. In our method, each bit time interval is divided into Ns frames, and the spectral phase-coded pulse is transmitted in one of these frames. Two exclusive PN sequences are assigned to each user. One is added to a superorthogonal convolutional encoder output to select the transmission frame, and the other is used to encode the phase of the ultrashort pulse in the spectral domain. We evaluate the bit error rate...

Exploring self-organized criticality conditions in Iran bulk power system with disturbance times series

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Vol. 21, issue. 6 , 2014 , p. 2264-2272 ; 10263098 Karimi, E ; Ebrahimi, A ; Fotuhi-Firuzabad, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2014
    Abstract
Ubiquitous power-law as a fingerprint of Self-Organized Criticality (SOC) is used for describing catastrophic events in different fields. In this paper, by investigating the prerequisites of SOC, we show that SOC-like dynamics drive a correlation among disturbances in Iranian bulk power systems. The existence of power-law regions in probability distribution is discussed for empirical data using maximum likelihood estimation. To verify the results, long time correlation is evaluated in terms of Hurst exponents, by means of statistical analysis of time series, including Rescaled Range (R/S) and Scaled Windowed Variance (SWV) analysis. Also, sensitivity analysis showed that for correct...

    Abstract
A significant portion of Iranian flat breads are produced in semi-industrial, indirect-heating ovens. Therefore, an efficient oven design and a proper selection of operating conditions are crucial to improve the product quality and reduce energy consumption. In the present study, a mathematical model is developed to simulate a semi-industrial, indirect-heating, continuous oven performance during contact baking of an Iranian flat bread, referred to as Taftoon. Individual modes of heat transfer are considered among various components of the baking system to estimate the system performance and the bread quality in terms of design and operating conditions. The predictions of this model are in...

    Abstract
Harmonic State Estimation (HSE) is a technique for identifying harmonic distributions in power systems with limited measurements. The main problem in HSE is the optimal placement of measurement meters such that the estimation error is minimized, while making the system fully observable. The second issue is the HSE method. This method must be accurate and fast enough in order to have an accurate HSE. This paper presents a new algorithm that uses minimum variance criterion (MVC) and a sequential method for optimal meters placement, SVD method for observability analysis and finally WLS method for harmonic estimation. The proposed method minimizes the number of measurement devices and the error...

Three-dimensional nonlinear seismic analysis of concrete faced rockfill dams subjected to scattered P, SV, and SH waves considering the dam-foundation interaction effects

    , Article Soil Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering ; Volume 31, Issue 5-6 , 2011 , Pages 792-804 ; 02677261 (ISSN) Seiphoori, A ; Mohsen Haeri, S ; Karimi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
In this study, the nonlinear seismic analysis of a typical three-dimensional concrete faced rockfill dam is reported. Three components of the Loma Prieta (Gilroy 1 station) earthquake acceleration time history are used as input excitation. The dam under study is considered as if it were located in a prismatic canyon with a trapezoidal cross-section. A nonlinear model for the rockfill material is used, and contact elements with Coulomb friction law are utilized at the slab-rockfill interface. Vertical joints in the face slab are also considered in the finite element model. A substructure method, in which the unbounded soil is modelled by the scaled boundary finite element method (SBFEM), is...

    , Article Russian Journal of Non-Ferrous Metals ; Volume 56, Issue 2 , 2015 , Pages 206-211 ; 10678212 (ISSN) Mohammadi, S ; Irani, M ; Karimi Taheri, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2015
    Abstract
In this paper, the effects of Equal Channel Angular Pressing process (ECAP) followed by Shot Peening process (SP) on the fatigue properties of 6082 aluminum alloy are investigated. Several samples of the alloy are ECAPed and SPed and then their mechanical behavior are characterized using tensile, micro-hardness, and fatigue tests. The results indicate that shot peening and then polishing the specimen after one-pass ECAP is an effective method to improve the fatigue life of the alloy. Moreover, by increasing the number of ECAP passes before shot peening, a local work softening occurs at the subsurface layer, leading to a significant decrease in the fatigue life of the alloy. The results of...

    Abstract
Interfacial tension is one of the very important parameters in pharmacology science, chemical engineering and petroleum engineering. The interfacial tension between pure hydrocarbons and water is widely used in chemical and petroleum engineering and so that it is highly desirable to find its accurate values. In this study a new unique correlation has been developed based on a comprehensive database of pure hydrocarbons-water interfacial tension values which contained both aliphatic and aromatic compounds (32 different hydrocarbons) with pressure ranges of 0.1-300 MPa and temperature ranges of 252.44-550 K. The proposed correlation uses the density difference between pure hydrocarbon and...

    Abstract
A risk-based approach for short term security assessment with voltage stability constraint is presented in this paper. This approach includes voltage-stability considerations in reactive power adequacy assessment of a composite power system. The proposed method is based on probabilistic criteria because deterministic risk criteria do not define consistently the true risk in the system. For risk calculation, in this paper, load and parametric uncertainties and system contingencies are considered. Then the effects of uncertainties and contingencies on bus voltage violation are calculated. The required reactive power is determined based on the calculated voltage violation in order to maintain...

    Abstract
This paper proposes a new decentralized power management and load sharing method for a photovoltaic (PV)-based, hybrid single/three-phase-islanded microgrid consisting of various PV units, battery units, and hybrid PV/battery units. The proposed method is not limited to the systems with separate PV and battery units, and power flow among different phases is performed automatically through three-phase units. The proposed method takes into account the available PV power and battery conditions of the units to share the load among them. To cover all possible conditions of the microgrid, the operation of each unit is divided into five states in single-phase units and seven states in three-phase...

    , Article Applied Thermal Engineering ; Volume 124 , 2017 , Pages 948-966 ; 13594311 (ISSN) Mazaheri, K ; Chaharlang Kiani, K ; Karimi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2017
    Abstract
The present paper outlines the application of the recently proposed heat-flux model (Mazaheri et al., 2017) to high blowing-ratio film-cooling and corrugated heat-exchanger simulations. Here, the focus is mainly on the accuracy of the predicted thermal fields, while to find out the sources of inaccuracy detailed analysis of the adopted second-moment-closure hydrodynamic model is provided. To do so, fundamental benchmarks which contain the dominant phenomena in the main cases are thoroughly analyzed to identify the anomalies. Then, the main cases including leading-edge film-cooling, antivortex film-cooling and corrugated heat-exchanger are investigated. The numerical predictions indicate that...
