Optimal Retrofitting of the Steel Moment Resisting Frames Using Friction Dampers

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Afzalinia, Farshad (Author) ; Moghaddam, Hassan (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The purpose of this thesis is the optimal retrofitting of the moment resisting frames with friction dampers, using the adaptive approach. In this regard, numerical modeling of the frictional behavior has been presented firstly. Also a 6-story moment resisting frame has been modeled in the OpenSees environment and the time history analysis has been carried out under a specific earthquake record. It is shown that inter-story drifts of the frame exceeds the acceptance criteria which has been assumed 2.5% according to the Life Safety limit. Then, the optimal retrofitting of the frame has been done. It is demonstrated that the maximum inter-story drift of all stories is 2.5% or less, while the...

    2009
    Abstract
This paper presents the results of an experimental and analytical study on the improvements gained in the axial compressive behavior of confined concrete. Among several parameters affecting compressive ductility of confined concrete, including confinement mechanical volumetric ratio, shape and size effect, number of confinement layers, strength of plain concrete and ductility of confining material, the latter was found to play the most important role in determining the ultimate strain and post peak behavior of concrete. Axial compressive tests were performed on small-scale circular or square section concrete columns, which were retrofitted either by CFRP jacket or by two types of...

    , Article Proceedings of the 2009 Structures Congress - Don't Mess with Structural Engineers: Expanding Our Role, 30 April 2009 through 2 May 2009, Austin, TX ; 2009 , Pages 2863-2872 ; 9780784410318 (ISBN) Moghaddam, H. A ; Samadi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
This paper presents the results of an experimental study on the application of pre-stressed high strength metal strips in retrofit of RC columns. Six 2/3 scale were deliberately designated with insufficient transverse reinforcement details and tested under constant axial and cyclic lateral load reversals. The level of axial load and the pattern of strengthening were parameters of this study. It was observed that the technique has been capable to enhance the lateral behavior of columns significantly, in terms of ductility. Very ductile behavior was obtained. The height-wise variations of lateral strain on confining strips are studied. The analysis of the fiber-based model of tested columns...

    Abstract
This study describes an odorless protocol for the synthesis of unsymmetrical sulfides via cobalt ferrite (CoFe2O4) catalyzed cross-coupling reaction of nitroarenes with alkyl halides in the presence of thiourea as sulfur source under ligand-free conditions. The catalyst was recycled using external magnetic field and reused for ten consecutive runs in the reaction of nitrobenzene, thiourea and benzyl bromide without significant loss of activity. Apart from being magnetically separable, being inexpensive and air-stable are another important features of this catalytic system. All the products were formed in good yields and short reaction times. © 2017 Elsevier B.V

On optimal dynamic pegging in rescheduling for new order arrival

    , Article Computers and Industrial Engineering ; Volume 136 , 2019 , Pages 46-56 ; 03608352 (ISSN) Moghaddam, S. K ; Saitou, K ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2019
    Abstract
A rescheduling method for new order arrival is presented based on the concept of dynamic pegging in multi-level production. Upon the arrival of new, unplanned orders, dynamic pegging enables the re-assignment of the Work-In-Progress (WIP) to the existing or newly arrived orders in such a way that the cost of rescheduling is minimized. A simple yet inspiring Mixed Integer Programming (MIP) model is proposed that combines dynamic pegging with rescheduling. The resulting schedules are compared with the ones obtained from two other basic rescheduling approaches. Analysis of the comparisons confirm the superiority of the proposed method in terms of total rescheduling costs. © 2019

    Abstract
This paper presents a new predictive-reactive rescheduling method for adjusting production schedules in response to the unplanned arrival of new orders in multi-level production. It is based on the concept of dynamic pegging, which enables the reassignment of the Work-In-Progress (WIP) to the existing or newly arrived orders at the time of rescheduling. Extending our previous work on reactive rescheduling with dynamic pegging, the new approach incorporates a probabilistic predictive model of new order arrival in the initial scheduling at the begging of the scheduling horizon. A Mixed Integer Programming (MIP) model is developed for two-phase, predictive-reactive scheduling before and after...

Motion blur identification in noisy images using mathematical models and statistical measures

    , Article Pattern Recognition ; Volume 40, Issue 7 , 2007 , Pages 1946-1957 ; 00313203 (ISSN) Ebrahimi Moghaddam, M ; Jamzad, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Motion blur is one of the most common blurs that degrades images. Restoration of such images is highly dependent on estimation of motion blur parameters. Since 1976, many researchers have developed algorithms to estimate linear motion blur parameters. These algorithms are different in their performance, time complexity, precision and robustness in noisy environments. In this paper, we have presented a novel algorithm to estimate linear motion blur parameters such as direction and length. We used Radon transform to find direction and bispectrum modeling to find the length of motion. Our algorithm is based on the combination of spatial and frequency domain analysis. The great benefit of our...

Controlled microwave-assisted synthesis of ZnO nanopowder and its catalytic activity for O-acylation of alcohol and phenol

    , Article Materials Science and Engineering B: Solid-State Materials for Advanced Technology ; Volume 139, Issue 2-3 , 2007 , Pages 265-269 ; 09215107 (ISSN) Matloubi Moghaddam, F ; Saeidian, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2007
    Abstract
ZnO nanopowder has been successfully synthesized by a microwave-assisted solution approach using Zn(CH3CO2)2·2H2O and NaOH. The results obtained from X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transition electron microscope (TEM) show that the mean particle size is 30 nm. SEM and TEM micrographs of ZnO nanopowder also reveal that nanoparticles have spherical shape. Catalytic activity of ZnO nanopowder for O-acylation of alcohol and phenol has been investigated. The results show that the reaction time by using ZnO nanopowder has been reduced by almost 24 times with higher yield than ZnO bulk. © 2007

    Abstract
In this article, behavior of cantilever retaining walls with various flexibilities, which retain saturated cohesive soil behind, is studied using numerical modeling. Generally, pattern of lateral earth pressure behind retaining walls is complex and this complexity becomes greater for clayey soils. In this investigation, effects of different wall bending stiffnesses, and backfill drainage conditions on the failure height and on the lateral earth pressure are investigated using finite elements. Comparison between the obtained results from numerical simulation and those based on empirical or conventional design methods indicate that soil-structure interaction and c drainage conditions play...

This paper presents a simulation-based study of the stuck-open fault testing in CMOS logic circuits. A novel built-in self-test (BIST) technique is presented for detecting stuck-open faults in these logic families. This scheme does not need test-pattern generation, and thus can be used for robust on-line testing. Simulation results for area, delay, and power overheads are presented. © 2007 IEEE
