, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mahmoudi Ali Bygi, Behzad (Author) ; Moshfegh, Alireza (Supervisor) ; Saboohi, Yadollah (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
In this research, initially, thin film of TiO2 nanotube arrays (TNA) was deposited on Titanium foil (Ti), using anodization technique under an optimized applied voltage of 60 V, for 200 minutes. Highly smooth and ordered TNA formed by effective two-step anodization method. The TNA synthesized by this procedure, showed a better surface smoothness and tube order as compared with the TNA prepared in one-step anodization process. The electrolyte which was utilized for the anodization process, contained 90% of Ethylene Glycol (EG) in volume, 10% de-ionized water (DI) in volume, 0.1M Ammonium Fluoride (NH4F), and 0.5 ml Phosphoric Acid (H3PO4) 1M in order to adjust the pH about 5.6. Moreover, the...

    Abstract
Pricing for an insurance policy can be described as the process of calculation of expected compensation to be paid to property losers as well as associated costs of potential risks. Loss forecast is accurate if the risks will be identified appropriately in order to calculate the frequency and expected severity of losses. This is particularly important about environmental risks since most of them appear in the long run. Environmental risk assessment model is both able to estimate the environmental liability premium for environmental pollution and degradation, and it can play a valuable role in promoting this industry. ELIS (Environmental Liability Insurance) software calculates the...

    Abstract
In this study, the thermal buckling analysis of hybrid laminated plates made of two-layered functionally graded materials (FGMs) that are integrated with surface-bonded piezoelectric actuators referred to as (P/FGM)s are investigated. Material properties for both substrate FGM layers and piezoelectric layers are temperature-dependent. Uniform temperature rise as a thermal load and constant applied actuator voltage are considered for this analysis. By definition of four new analytic functions, the five coupled governing stability equations, which are derived based on the first-order shear deformation plate theory, are converted into fourth-order and second-order decoupled partial differential...

    , Article Journal of Thermophysics and Heat Transfer ; Volume 23, Issue 4 , 2009 , Pages 801-809 ; 08878722 (ISSN) Nouri Borujerdi, A ; Ziaei Rad, M ; Seume, J. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
This study investigates the effects of wall heating and skin friction on the characteristics of a compressible turbulent flow in developing and developed regions of a pipe. The numerical solution is performed by finite-element-based finite volume method applied on unstructured grids. A modified κ-ε model with a two-layer equation for the near-wall region and a compressibility correction are used to predict turbulent viscosity. The results show that shear stress in fully developed flow is nearly constant from the centerline up to 75% of the pipe radius, then increases sharply next to the wall, and the ratio of the turbulent viscosity to the molecular one is less than 0.2. Under a uniform wall...

    Abstract
Herein, we report a modified two-step method to construct a uniform and pinhole-free polycrystalline perovskite film with large grains up to the microscale using lead mixed-halide (PbI2-PbCl2) precursor solutions to guarantee the device functioning. Commonly used sequential deposition methods based on dip- and spin-coatings are combined with a vapor-assisted solution process to improve the perovskite morphology and tune the residual lead mixed-halides. These can enhance the optical absorption and efficiency of perovskite solar cell (PSC) devices. The impact of the Cl content in the lead mixed-halide precursors and the employed preparation methods on the photovoltaic performance of PSCs are...

The PLS modeling was used for the multivariate calibration of the spectrophotometric data and DOSC was used for preprocessing of data matrices and the prediction results of model. The experimental calibration matrix was designed by measuring the absorbance over the range 200-400 nm for 32...

Diffusion and segregation of substrate copper in electrodeposited Ni-Fe thin films

    , Article Journal of Alloys and Compounds ; Volume 443, Issue 1-2 , 2007 , Pages 81-86 ; 09258388 (ISSN) Ahadian, M. M ; Iraji zad, A ; Nouri, E ; Ranjbar, M ; Dolati, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2007
    Abstract
The Cu surface segregation is investigated in the electrodeposited Ni-Fe layers using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The results indicate that Cu segregation and accumulation take place in areated and deareated baths and the amount of segregated copper increases after air exposure. This phenomenon is explained by lower interfacial tension of the Cu in comparison with Ni and Fe. Our results reveal more surface segregation in the electrodeposit than vacuum reported results. This should be due to interface charging and higher surface diffusion in applied potential. The effect of...

Two-phase flow in microchannels with a bounding porous medium

    2011
    Abstract
This paper investigates numerical simulation of one-dimensional homogeneous adiabatic gas-liquid two-phase flow in a rectangular microchannel with one boundary porous wall under the assumption of hydrophobic condition. Gas enters the microchannel with a uniform velocity and liquid is injected through the porous side wall. The present approach is to simulate water injection effects and developing mechanism of two-phase flow. The modeling and solution of the conservation equations provide pressure drop, vapor quality, void fraction and tow-phase mixture velocity for different water injection rates. The results show that velocity and pressure drop significantly perturbed when the water...

A new approach to thermo-fluid behavior through porous layer of heat pipes

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 25, Issue 3B , 2018 , Pages 1236-1242 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Nouri Borujerdi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Sharif University of Technology  2018
    Abstract
This paper developed a new mathematical model to investigate the heat transfer as well as wick's thickness of a heat pipe. The model was established by conservative equations of continuity, momentum, and energy in the thermal boundary layer. Using a similarity variable, the governing equations were changed to a set of ordinary differential equations and were solved numerically by the forth-order Runge-Kutta method. The flow variables, such as velocity components, wick's thickness, and Nusselt number, were obtained. The results show that the Nusselt number is proportional to the square root of the Darcy-modified Rayleigh number and to the distance from the edge of the condenser surface....

Analysis of vacuum venting in die casting

    Sharif University of Technology  2004
    Abstract
The present study is undertaken to calculate the rate of change of pressure and residual air mass in die casting for vacuum venting under choked flow conditions. In these calculations, the influence of friction factor, due to roughness and vent air velocity change through the Mach number, has been taken into account. The results show that there is a critical area ratio below which the pressure and vent inlet Mach number increase with time and above which decrease with time. In addition, for an area ratio less than the critical area, the rate of change of residual air mass seems to be more changed at the late stages than at the early stages of the filling time. The picture is reversed for a...

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 18, Issue 4 B , August , 2011 , Pages 923-929 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Hanafizadeh, P ; Saidi, M. H ; Nouri Gheimasi, A ; Ghanbarzadeh, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
In this study, the flow patterns of air-water, two-phase flows have been investigated experimentally in a vertical mini pipe. The flow regimes were observed by a high speed video recorder in pipes with diameters of 2,3 and 4 mm and length 27, 31 and 25 cm, respectively. The comprehensive visualization of air-water, two-phase flow in a vertical mini pipe has been performed to realize the physics of such a two-phase flow. Different flow patterns of air-water flow were observed simultaneously in the mini pipe at different values of air and water flow rates. Consequently, the flow pattern map was proposed for flow in the mini-pipe, in terms of superficial velocities of liquid and gas phases. The...

    Abstract
Herein, we demonstrate a facile low temperature approach to prepare a gel polymer electrolyte (GPE) based on the triiodide/iodide redox couple in a quasi-solid-state dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC). Only one polymeric agent (i.e., hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC)) is used for the preparation of a non-volatile GPE system for the standard liquid electrolyte containing 1-methyl-3-propylimidazolium iodide (MPII). The prepared GPE completely penetrates into a TiO2 photoanode at room temperature due to the uniform distribution of Ti, Ru and I elements in the cross-section of the electrode, forming an interpenetrating GPE/TiO2 network to access all dye molecules. The GPE with the optimum HPC : MPII...

Drag reduction in a channel with microstructure grooves using the lattice Boltzmann method

    Abstract
Using the Shan-Chen lattice Boltzmann multi-phase model, we investigate the effect of adding microstructured grooves to the walls of a 2D parallel-plate channel on the pressure drop in the channel. The effects of the size of the grooves on the pressure drop in the channel were considered. It was observed that the pitch of the grooves has a considerable effect on the pressure drop in the channel, and even for some values of the pitch we observe an increase in the pressure drop. As the pitch decreases, a lower pressure drop is achieved. The results also show that as the ratio of the solid-liquid contact surface to the whole surface is decreased, the pressure drop decreases. It is also observed...

    Abstract
Improved methods of constructing wells and producing wells are one of the keys to increasing field profitability. In the areas of well construction and well productivity optimization, many of the problems encountered are related to the geomechanics of the reservoir and the overlying layers; these problems include well-bore stability, sand production and hydraulic fracturing. Hydraulic fracturing is a complicated phenomenon in which deformation of the porous medium and fluid leak-off to the surrounding area take place simultaneously. Their interaction, therefore, must not be overlooked. In the past, some experimental researchers performed laboratory investigations on the phenomenon of...
