The Impact of Financial Incentives on Cesarean Rates: Evidence from a Large Subsidy Program in Iran

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Taheri, Sarina (Author) ; Rahmati, Mohammad Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
On May 5, 2014, Iran began the Health Transformation Plan in public hospitals to promote vaginal delivery by increasing physician fees and by freeing payment of natural labor. About five month later part of the plan extended to non-public hospitals, and the fee of vaginal delivery increased there as well. These consequent exogenous policies provide an ideal environment to examine how Ob/Gyn physicians and pregnant mothers respond to financial incentives using difference-in-difference identification. We find that after the first reform caesarean rates declined by 4.92 percent in public hospitals without any health deterioration, a significant but modest drop. Our results suggest that in the...

Noise Analysis and Performance Improvement of Microwave Diode Mixers, and Improving the Method of Noise Figure Measurement

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Rahmati, Mohammad Mehdi (Author) ; Banai, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In spite of developments in microwave mixers, reducing its noise figure is still a designers’ challenge in receiver applications. Due to generating intermodulations and saturating the following stages, the low noise amplifier cannot have a so much gain to decrease the noise of the following stages in a typical receiver. This problem is intensified in special applications because of low dynamic range of low noise amplifiers. Accordingly, the low noise amplifier is replaced sometimes by the mixer. Therefore, the design of a low noise mixer is an important issue in improving the noise performance of a total receiver. To this end, it is required to accurately analyse the nonlinear and noise...

Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning (HVAC) plant is a multivariable, nonlinear and non minimum phase system, which control of this plant, is very difficult. This paper presents a new approach to control of HVAC system. The proposed method is a hybrid of fuzzy logic and PID controller. Simulation results show that this control strategy is very robust, flexible and alternative performance. To evaluate the usefulness of the proposed method, we compare the response of this method with PID controller. The simulation results show that our method has the better control performance than PID controller

Identifying the Effect of Gasoline Consumption on Pollutant Emissions with the help of The Covid-19 Outbreak Exogenous Shock

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Abouzarpoor, Hassan (Author) ; Rahmati, Mohammad Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Gasoline consumption resulting from vehicular traffic is one of the most significant factors influencing the emission levels of pollutants. Since the sold gasoline at fuel stations does not necessarily translate into vehicular traffic, tracing the final consumer becomes challenging. hence, estimating the impact of gasoline consumption on air pollution is accompanied by biased results. Moreover, the COVID-19 outbreak, acting as an exogenous shock, has provided an opportunity to use data such as COVID-19 and intercity travel as instrumental variables, gasoline consumption, and emission levels, between 2018 and 2020, show unbiased estimates of the effect of gasoline consumption on air...

    Abstract
Owing to the exceptional properties of graphene and the crucial role of substrate on the performance of electrochemical biosensors, several graphene-based hybrid structures have recently emerged, yielding improved selectivity and sensitivity. To date, most of the reported biosensors utilize solution-driven graphene flakes with drawbacks of low conductivity (due to high inter-junction contact resistant) and structural fragility. Herein, we present a conductive three-dimensional CeO2 semiconductor nanoparticles/graphene nanocomposite, as a platform for sensitive detection of hydrogen peroxide, an important molecule in fundamental biological processes. The 3D conductive graphene architecture is...

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery ; Vol. 27, issue. 2 , 2012 , p. 610-617 ; ISSN: 8858977 Fotuhi-Firuzabad, M ; Aminifar, F ; Rahmati, I ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
Of particular interest to restrict the short-circuit level of interconnected power systems is to exploit fault current limiter (FCL) technologies. FCLs let the system planners devise new reliable and rather economical substation configurations and provide the possibility of proposing a promising cost-effective and prompt solution to the fault current over duty problem in the existing substations. This paper attempts to assess reliability of substation architectures accommodating the FCL operation and, besides, numerically investigates the FCL's impacts on the substation reliability indices. In order to clarify the proposed approach, two case studies with and without FCL are analyzed and...

The results of this research were compared with conventional wax model production methods. The criteria of such comparison were based upon parameters such as time, cost, and other related characteristics, which resulted in saving of 50% in time and 60% in cost. In this research,...

Price elasticity of gasoline smuggling: a semi-structural estimation approach

    , Article Energy Economics ; Volume 71 , 2018 , Pages 171-185 ; 01409883 (ISSN) Ghoddusi, H ; Rafizadeh, N ; Rahmati, M. H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2018
    Abstract
We estimate the price elasticity of the demand for gasoline smuggling in Iran. For this purpose, we employ a detailed panel of monthly gasoline consumption data from 160 distribution hubs during the period 2005–2014. We apply two different approaches which are diff-in-diff and panel data estimations. The results suggest that the foreign-to-home gasoline price ratios have a significant impact on the time-varying elasticity of demand. This finding supports the hypothesis that an increase in domestic gasoline prices will significantly reduce the demand for smuggling. In addition, as the distance of a region from its closest higher-price neighboring country diminishes, the price elasticity of...

Dynamic feedback stabilization of timoshenko beam with internal input delays

    Abstract
In this paper, we consider the exponential stabilization problem of a Timoshenko beam with interior local controls with input delays. In the past, most of the stabilization results for the Timoshenko beam were on the boundary control with input delays. In the present paper we shall extend the method treating the boundary control with delays to the case of interior local control with delays. Essentially we design a new dynamic feedback control laws that stabilizes exponentially the system. Detail of the design procedure of the dynamic feedback controller and analysis of the exponential stability are given. © 2018 World Scientific and Engineering Academy and Society. Estimation of Inter-sectoral Labor Mobility Costs in Iran’s Economy

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Choubdaran Varnosfaderani, Ali (Author) ; Rahmati, Mohammad Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In order to estimate the inter-sectoral labor mobility costs in Iran’s economy, in this research, we design and estimate a structural model of worker’s decisions. The estimation method used in this research is Simulated Method of Moments and we have used Labor Force Survey and Household Expenditure and Income Survey in order to extract necessary moments. Our findings show that: 1) inter-sectoral labor mobility costs in Iran’s economy are large and they are between 3 to 11 times the annual income. 2) These costs are higher for female, rural, older and high-educated workers. 3) If these costs were zero, production in tradable and non-tradable sectors would have been 36 and 16 percent larger...

    Abstract
Low scalability and power efficiency of the shared bus in SoCs is a motivation to use on chip networks instead of traditional buses. In this paper we have modified the Orion power model to reach an analytical model to estimate the average message energy in K-Ary n-Cubes with focus on the number of virtual channels. Afterward by using the power model and also the performance model proposed in [11] the effect of number of virtual channels on Energy-Delay product have been analyzed. In addition a cycle accurate power and performance simulator have been implemented in VHDL to verify the results. ©2008 IEEE

    Abstract
High speed data converter are very often used in telecommunication systems. Since these systems are increasingly used in mobile foem reducing the power consumption in these circuits is of great importance. The goal of this project was to design a pipeline 10 bit converter for a sample rate 200MS/s with a power consumption of 35 mW for the input level of 1Vp-p and a 1.8V power supply in 0.18um CMOS technology.
To reach these goals, a number of low power techniqes are proposed in various levels of abstraction. In system level, the sampling and feedback capacitors is optimized analytically which leads to simple back-envelope formulas to calculate the optimum values. In circuit level, a...

The Effect of Relationship Lending on the Contract terms of the Loans

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Foroughi Fard, Rasoul (Author) ; Rahmati, Mohammad Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
This study examin the effect of relationship lending on the contract terms of the loans consist of loan rate, avalibility of the loan and collateral reqierements. For this purpose, we use 4850 data of loan granted by GHavamin bank in three months Farvardin, Ordibehesht and KHordad in 1395. The results of this study indicate relationship lending has a negative significant effect on the loan rate, a positive significant effect on the availability of the loan and positive insignificant effect on the collateral requirements. Thus, relationship lending as a solution for information asymmetry, leading to cost advantage for the banks. Banks transfer this advantage to client by lowering the loan...

The Effect of Increasing The Value of Natural Gas Production on Property Value, Wages, Unemployment Rate and Birth Rate in The United States of America (2000-2011)

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Asgari, Mohammad Hossein (Author) ; Rahmati, Mohammad Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In the present study, the effects of increasing the value of shale gas production, either due to increased production or price increases, have been studied on economic variables such as employment, wage, property value and the number of births. In this regard, the data for each of these variables was used at the county level in the United States of America between 2000 and 2011. In order to estimate the desired effects, counties are divided into two types of boom and non-boom counties. The findings indicate that increasing natural gas production will lead to more employment and wage growth in boom counties than non-boom counties. Also, during the period of increasing production, the value of...
