, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Gorjizadeh, Hossein (Author) ; Seyed Reihani, Nader (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Optical tweezers consist of a tightly focused laser beam. Particle with refractive index grater than that of the surrounding medium are eligible for optical trapping. This device is used for measuring forces from pico-newton to nano-newton, and displacements from nanometer to micrometer. In biopolymers, for example, it is used for studying the elasticity of DNA molecules, mechanical properties of cell membrane; and also in Microfluidics, it can is used for mixing two liquids flowing in a micro-channel by rotating a trapped particle. In general, physics of optical tweezers (or interaction of the trapped particle with the tightly focused laser beam) is treated in three different regimes:1)...

Investigating the Effect of Hemoglobin on Viscoelastic Properties of RBC

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Felekary, Arash (Author) ; Seyed Reihani, Nader (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Red blood cells are one of the most important parts of blood and their mechanical properties are so important in some diseases. Red blood cell is mostly consisted of membrane, cell skeleton, and cytoplasm which contains hemoglobin proteins. Studying these properties separately not only could give us pieces of information about cell mechanics, but also reveals a way to predict their behavior after illnesses. Optical tweezers as a tool, which can produce and measure Piconewton to Nanonewton forces, has been interesting in red blood cell parts' studying. In this thesis, at first hemoglobin is taken out gradually by using Saponin (which is enable to make some pores in the membrane) and the...

The Effect of Thyroid Hormones on The Viscoelastic Behavior of Red Blood Cells

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Laktarash, Shaghayegh (Author) ; Seyed Reihani, Nader (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Blood is one of the most important fluids in the human body, consisting of three parts: red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. The mechanical properties of red blood cells are important in many diseases. The study of viscosity and other mechanical properties of red blood cells in recent years has attracted the attention of scientists in this field. The mechanical properties of red blood cells are related to the outer membrane and its cytoskeleton, and the study of these components can predict the behavior of red blood cells in diseases. The thyroid gland is located in front of the neck and secretes hormones that control many chemical processes in different parts of the body....

On the PDF of the sum of random vectors

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Communications ; Volume 48, Issue 1 , 2000 , Pages 7-12 ; 00906778 (ISSN) Abdi, A ; Hashemi, H ; Nader Esfahani, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    2000
    Abstract
There are various cases in physics and engineering sciences (especially communications) where one requires the envelope probability density function (pdf) of the sum of several random sinusoidal signals. According to the correspondence between a random sinusoidal signal and a random vector, the sum of random vectors can be considered as an abstract mathematical model for the above sum. Now it is desired to obtain the pdf of the length of the resulting vector. Considering the common and reasonable assumption of uniform distributions for the angles of vectors, many researchers have obtained the pdf of the length of the resulting vector only for special cases. However in this paper, the pdf is...

A procedure for obtaining a behavioral description for the control logic of a non-linear pipeline

, Article Proceedings of the ASP - DAC 2004 Asia and South Pacific Design Automation Conference - 2004, Yokohama, 27 January 2004 through 30 January 2004 ; 2004 , Pages 86-91 Najaf Abadi, H. H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2004
    Abstract
Much attention has been directed to different aspects of the design of pipelines. Design of the control logic of non-linear pipelines has however, been considered as a subsidiary issue in that an RTL description for such logic can easily be obtained from a behavioral description, with the use of widely available synthesis tools. But, as the complexity of a non-linear pipeline increases, so does the complexity of the control logic. The complexity may be to an extent that obtaining even a behavioral description for the control logic is rendered difficult. This paper focuses on further automating the development of systems consisting of non-linear or multi-function pipelines by proposing an...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Haghgo, Mojtaba (Author) ; Shafahi, Yousof (Supervisor) ; Tabatabaei, Nader (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Fatigue is one of the most common failure modes that reduce the structural integrity of asphalt pavements. Dynamic tests are used as fatigue performance indicators for asphalt mixture. However, these tests are expensive and require special equipment and set up. At this research, the main goal is to develop a fuzzy model which is more efficient than the existing regression model for prediction of the fatigue life. A database from the available data from various research was compiled. For each model, a comparison between Fuzzy and regression output by actual outputs was done and it was seen that the fuzzy modeling can predict fatigue life very closely. Finally, the required software for this...

Development of Pavement Performance Prediction Models Based on the Assumptions of Availablity and Ubavailabilty of Accurate Data

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ziyadi, Mojtaba (Author) ; Tabatabaei, Nader (Supervisor) ; Shafahi, Yusof (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Accurate prediction of pavement performance is essential to a pavement infrastructure management system. Selection of the prediction model is based on the extent of available data, assumptions used in performance modeling, ease of use and management purposes. Therefore, two methods were proposed in this thesis based on the assumptions of availability and unavailibility of accurate data. The first method presents a two-stage model to classify and accurately predict the performance of a pavement infrastructure system. Sections with similar characteristics are classified into groups using a support vector classifier (SVC). Then, a recurrent neural network (RNN) is utilized to predict...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mohammad Karimi, Mohammad (Author) ; Tabatabaee, Nader (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Asphalt concrete is a composite mixture of three phases; aggregate, bitumen and air void. Stress and strain distributions obtained from macroscopic modeling yield different results due to distinctly different mechanical properties of the above-mentioned phases. In this study a more exact analysis of the stress and strain, were carried out by considering the mixture as a two-phase composite; aggregate and mastic phases. Asphalt concrete was considered a composite material consisted of sand mastic and aggregate. Aggregate and mastic phases were separated and response of the loaded asphalt mixture was investigated. Aggregates finer than 2.36 mm in diameter, filler and bitumen consist the...

Evaluation of Rheological Properties of Modified Binders with Two Modifiers

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Jalaeian Samani, Mohammad Hanif (Author) ; Tabatabaee, Nader (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Binder modification, to improve the rheological properties and meet the standard requirements, is a common practice. The modification is usually done by adding polymers like Ethylene Vinyl Acetate (EVA) and Styrene Butadiene Styrene (SBS), waste materials like crumb rubber, or acids like Poly phosphoric acid (PPA) or by air blowing techniques. High temperature rheological properties of modified binders are usually improved by using polymers while the low temperature rheological properties mostly depend on the original binder. Therefore, the rheological properties at low temperatures do not show clear improvements in the modified binder compared to the original binder. This indicates that a...

Improvement of Engineering Properties of Asphalt Binders Modified with Crumb Rubber

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ghasemi Rad, Amir Hossein (Author) ; Tabatabaei, Nader (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Modification by crumb rubber is a useful means of improving the resistance of asphalt binders and mixtures against rutting, fatigue cracking, and low temperature cracking. Increase binder viscosity and decrease stability at high temperatures are accompanied by most modifiers, and crumb rubber is no exception. Recent research efforts have shown that development of cross bonds across polymer chains and sulfur can improve the storage stability of modified binders. Also, WMA additives can considerably decrease the binder viscosity. This research showed that addition of small amount of sulfur during the crumb rubber modification can improve the workability and storage stability of this binder....

Microstructure-Based Visco-Elastoplastic Continuum Model of Asphalt Concrete

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Zahabi Ardekani, Mohammad Hossein (Author) ; Tabatabaei, Nader (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Asphalt concrete is a heterogeneous and multi-phase material that consists of aggregates, asphalt binder, and pores. These components create a complex microstructure. There is no consensus on how to quantify the microstructure and the required parameters from two-dimensional images. The load transfer can be managed by aggregate-aggregate or aggregate-mastic interactions that depend on the gradation, aggregate internal structure, and asphalt binder viscoelastic properties. The most important internal structure indices affecting the behavior of HMA are aggregate orientation, contact orientation, contact length, and number of contact points. In this research, the influence of aggregate...

Investigation on Using Fresnel Lens in Human Eye

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Eskandari, Mohammad Amin (Author) ; Seyyed Reihani, Nader (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Human eye is one of the most important organs of the human body. Performance of the eye may be decreased by some anomalies such as myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, cataract, glaucoma, etc. There are variety of techniques to treat eye anomalies including surgery, using optical elements and training methods. The easiest way of treating refractive errors of the eye, is to use optical elements such as contact lenses, intraocular lenses and glasses. In the case of cataract, Crystalline lens loses its opacity and should be replaced by artificial lens. The best choice is Fresnel lens which has lower weight and thickness than refractive lenses.Fresnel lens is a diffractive optical element which uses...

DEP Force Measurement on Polystyrene Beads and Red Blood Cells Using Optical Tweezers

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Sasanpour Yazdi, Mehrzad (Author) ; Seyed Reihani, Nader (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In the presence of spatially non-uniform electric field, a dielectric object can experience a translational force which is known as Dielectrophoresis (DEP) force. DEP is one of the most applicable methods in sorting mechanism of different biological cells. Moreover accurately measuring the DEP force in single cell level can lead to a valuable knwoledge about the electrical properties of various cells. In this thesis, first, the other electrokinetic forces in which the Electro-Osmosis (EO) force is the important one, have to be eliminated. Regarding that this effect is strongly dependent on the frequency of external E field, we have applied the external electric field at appropriate frequency...

Optimizing the Economic Lot Size of a Two-Stage Supply Chain With Rework Consideration

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mobarak Abadi, Sara (Author) ; Hajji, Rasul (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In the present research a two stage supply chain is considered. In its first echelon, there is a producer that produces both perfect and defective items. Defective items are reworked by producer and no defective item is produced during the reworking process. There is a buyer in second echelon of the supply chain that faces constant demand and orders fixed batches in fixed periods to the producer. So in each complete cycle of production, multiple orders are received from buyer. Two different policies for reworking are investigated in this research. In the first policy, reworking is done in the same cycle that producing is conducted but in the second one all defective items that are produced...
