Hierarchical Classification of Variable Stars Using Deep Convolutional and Recurrent Neural Networks

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Abdollahi, Mahdi (Author) ; Rahvar, Sohrab (Supervisor) ; Raeisi, Sadegh (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The importance of using a fast and automatic method to classify variable stars for large amounts of data is undeniable. There have been many attempts for classifying variable stars by traditional algorithms, which require long pre-processing time. In recent years, neural networks as classifiers have come to notice. This thesis proposes the Hierarchical Classification technique, which contains several models with the same network structure. Our pre-processing method produces input data by using light curves and the period. We use OGLE-IV variable stars database to train and test the performance of Convolutional Neural Networks based on the Hierarchical Classification technique. We see that...

    , Article Thin-Walled Structures ; Volume 171 , 2022 ; 02638231 (ISSN) Abdollahi, R ; Firouz abadi, R. D ; Rahmanian, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2022
    Abstract
This study aims to investigate the nonlinear dynamic characteristics of annular cylinders coupled with a fluid medium to identify the effective parameters on stability margins at different rotation speeds. To achieve this, stability and nonlinear vibrations of rotating cylindrical shells containing incompressible annular fluid are considered. The fluid medium is bounded by a rigid external cylinder. Sanders–Koiter kinematic assumptions are utilized to determine the geometrically nonlinear structural equations of motion. These equations are then used to investigate finite amplitude vibrations of various fluid-loaded shells at different states. A penalty approach is introduced by using...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Sadat Bashiri, Fereshteh (Author) ; Faez, Rahim (Supervisor) ; Bagheri Shouraki, Saeed (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Quantum-Dot Cellular Automata (QCA) is a novel field of nanotechnology which is being designed and implemented in molecular scales. It has major advantageous over transistor based technology such as: low power consumption, high information transition speed, small size and high density. It has been shown that conventional transistor based circuits can be implemented in this nanotechnology with less complexity. Furthermore, binary circuits can be implemented in QCA technology since QCA cells have only two independent and equivalent states. So, QCA provides appropriate space for computational circuits. The aim of computational circuits design is to achieve small size and high speed processors....

    Abstract
Biomass residues due to their low bulk density typically require frequent transportation from biomass plantations in rural areas to conversion bio-energy power plants. This issue contrasts with environmental protection strategies, especially when power plants are facing different carbon reduction policies that enforce them to emit less than a given specific carbon amount. Although several researchers have investigated bio-energy supply chains concerning environmental policies, the majority of studies have been devoted to strategic decisions over a single planning period. This paper presents a multi-period bio-energy supply chain under carbon pricing (carbon tax) and carbon trading...

    Abstract
In the last years, we have seen a rapid growth of data generation that leads to an increasing need for data analysis and big data technologies. Meanwhile, cloud computing witnessed great popularity and has become one of the best platforms for big data analytics due to its flexibility and scalability. However, there is not an obvious method for choosing the right cluster configuration for running big data jobs in clouds. Because different big data applications, workloads and cloud configurations can lead to different costs. Moreover, a heterogeneous cluster can use the benefits of distinguished properties of each machine to reduce the cost and execution time of the big data application. The...

    Abstract
This paper proposes a nanophotonic Network-on-Chip architecture based on the traditional Cube-Connected Cycles topology (CCC), which is named as ONC3. We also suggest a contention-free quasi-Dimension-Order-Routing algorithm for the proposed structure. Compared to the previous 2D layouts, our novel scheme lessens the crosstalk parameter of the insertion loss and consequently, the power consumption. Besides, the router structure is area-efficient. On the other hand, optical destination checking supersedes electrical resource reservation, with utilizing passive wavelength routing method and Wavelength Division Multiplexing scheme, simultaneously. The efficiency of the proposed architecture, in...

Biomechanical Modeling of Flexible-bar and Investigating of Muscle Forces and Compression Forces on Discs in Lumbar Region During of Rehabilitation Exercises

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Abdollahi, Masoud (Author) ; Parnianpour, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Asghari, Mohsen (Supervisor)
    Abstract
A single-degree-of-freedom model is considered for flexible exercise bars based on the lumped-element approach. By considering the side segment of a flexible exercise bar as a cantilever beam with an equivalent mass at the free end, its free-vibration response and forced one under excitation of the grip of the flexible bar is written parametrically. Some experiments are performed on a specific flexible bar to obtain numerical values for the parameters in the model to have it quantitatively known. In the next step, simulation of the model results in the response of the flexible bar under a considered excitation. The response is imported into a multi-segment musculoskeletal software, AnyBody,...

    Abstract
This paper proposes a new approach for solving generation scheduling and ramp rate constrained unit commitment with considering spinning reserve probability. In order to simulate the probability of reserve in the formulation, the estimated probability that spinning reserve is called and generated has been considered. A hybrid heuristic method between genetic algorithm and lambdad iteration method is applied to solve the problem. The proposed approach is applied to two different cases such as a 10-unit base problem without considering probability of reserve and 10-unit problem with considering probability of reserve. The results are compared with other approaches results to exhibit the...

Joint transfer of energy and information in a two-hop relay channel

    , Article IWCIT 2017 - Iran Workshop on Communication and Information Theory, 3 May 2017 through 4 May 2017 ; 2017 ; 9781509047833 (ISBN) Abdollahi Bafghi, A. H ; Mirmohseni, M ; Aref, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2017
    Abstract
We study the problem of joint information and energy transfer in a two-hop channel with a Radio frequency (RF) energy harvesting relay. We consider a finite battery size at the relay and deterministic energy loss in transmitting energy. In other words, to be able to send an energy-contained symbol, the relay must receive multiple energy-contained symbols. Thus, we face a kind of channel with memory. We model the energy saved in battery as channel state with the challenge that the receiver does not know the channel state. First, we consider the problem without any channel noise and derive an achievable rate. Next, we extend the results to the case with an independent and identically...

    Abstract
In this research, fine-grained SnO2-based varistors with a simple microstructure and the mean grain size of 0.8 µm were obtained by the microwave sintering method. The breakdown electric field measured for these varistors was 12 kV/cm that is 3 times higher than the conventional-sintered varistors. The high nonlinear coefficient (60) and low leakage current density (9 µA/cm2) were achieved in fine-grained SnO2 varistors. The fine-grained SnO2 varistors appropriately clamped pulse current surges and the calculated value of the clamping voltage ratio of these varistors was 2. The excellent electrical properties and protective effect of fine-grained SnO2 varistors showed that these varistors...

The energy hub: An extensive survey on the state-of-the-art

    , Article Applied Thermal Engineering ; Volume 161 , 2019 ; 13594311 (ISSN) Sadeghi, H ; Rashidinejad, M ; Moeini Aghtaie, M ; Abdollahi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2019
    Abstract
Today's world energy-related challenges, ranging from anthropogenic climate change to continuous growth of demand for different energy forms, have enforced planners of energy systems (ESs) to concentrate on more optimal and eco-friendly operation and/or expansion planning methodologies. In this context, increased interdependencies of gas, heat and electricity ESs have recently encouraged the planners to design operation and/or expiation strategies in an integrated manner in favor of a new concept, the so-called “Energy Hub” (EH). Although this concept has been employed so far in a multitude of studies, but its real nature, advantages, difficulties, importance or inevitability aspect, and...

Quaternion based linear time-varying model predictive attitude control for satellites with two reaction wheels

    , Article Aerospace Science and Technology ; Volume 98 , March , 2020 ; ISSN: 12709638 Golzari, A ; Nejat Pishkenari, H ; Salarieh, H ; Abdollahi, T ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Masson SAS  2020
    Abstract
Attitude control of a satellite having only two reaction wheels is a challenging issue. To address this problem, previously published researches considered some simplifying assumptions on the satellites such as diagonality of the moment of the inertia matrix. On the other hand, in some works, the total angular momentum of the satellite is assumed to be zero. In this paper, a linear time-variant model predictive control (LTV MPC) is designed to control a satellite with two reaction wheels. This control method can be applied to a satellite with a non-diagonal inertial matrix in the presence of external torques, to rotate the satellite toward the desired directions in the space and orbit. The...

Analysis of Lightweight Attribute-Based Encryption Schemes and Presentation of Two New Schemes

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Abdollahi, Sina (Author) ; Mohajeri, Javad (Supervisor) ; Salmasizadeh, Mahmoud (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
Cloud storage provides an accessible and cheap space for data storage. There is usually no trust between users and the Cloud. Consequently, to maintain confidentiality, outsourcing and storing sensitive data in an encrypted form is necessary. In applications where data sharing between several users is required, ciphertext-policy attribute-based encryption(CP-ABE) has been considered a promising solution, but the lack of efficiency and flexibility limits its usage in applications such as IoT. These problems are usually related to both the underlying structure and the required peripheral processes, such as key revocation. In this thesis, two schemes with the same basic structure and different...

    Abstract
Reinforcing the correlation between Gas and Electricity Systems (G&ESs) susceptible to diverse factors ranging from anthropogenic climate change to the advent of new conversion/generation technologies has remarkably brought into focus the co-expansion of G&ESs using a new concept so-called Energy Hub (EH) as well as the potential of storage systems. To assess the effectiveness of EH approach and the role of storages in the coordinated plans of G&ES, this study proposes a comprehensive EH-based planning model for co-expansion of G&ES supply chains with respect to the role of Gas Storage Systems (GSSs). As a Mixed-Integer Linear Programming (MILP) problem, the model is applied to a real...

    Abstract
In this paper, we study the degrees of freedom (DoF) of a frequency-selective K-user interference channel in the presence of an instantaneous relay (IR) with multiple receiving and transmitting antennas. We investigate two scenarios based on the IR antennas’ cooperation ability. First, we assume that the IR receiving and transmitting antennas can coordinate with each other and that the transmitted signal of each transmitting antenna can depend on the received signals of all receiving antennas, and we derive lower and upper bounds for the sum DoF of this model. In an interference alignment scheme, we divide receivers into two groups called clean and dirty receivers. We design our scheme such...

    Abstract
Given an event O and a set of experts E, we describe a method for finding a subset of experts S whose aggregated opinions best predict the outcome of O. Therefor, the problem can be regarded as team formation for performing a prediction task. In order to estimate competency of each team we propose measure Sum Squared Error which uses experts’ records of predictions during past k days. For simplicity, opinion pooling is selected as the method of information aggregation. we prove in case of simple averaging of opinions, finding best team is NP-hard. we suggest some rounding and heuristic algorithms for finding near optimal solutions. Simulation results show that a variation of tabu search used...
