    , Article 2006 International Conference on Power System Technology, POWERCON2006, Chongqing, 22 October 2006 through 26 October 2006 ; 2006 ; 1424401119 (ISBN); 9781424401116 (ISBN) Zolghadri, M. R ; Ghafori, A ; Ehsan, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this paper a fuzzy logic based controller for STATCOM is used to improve power system transient stability. As opposed to the modern control theory, fuzzy logic design is not based on the mathematical model of the process. The controller designed using fuzzy logic implements human reasoning that can be programmed into fuzzy logic language (membership functions, rules and the rule interpretation). The nonlinear fuzzy controller is proposed to supply a supplementary control signal to STATCOM to increase the critical clearing time and overcome the uncertainties existing in the power systems. Proposed method is implemented in a single machine infinite bus system and the results are compared...

    , Article Electric Power Systems Research ; Volume 209 , 2022 ; 03787796 (ISSN) Jahromi, S. N ; Hajipour, E ; Ehsan, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2022
    Abstract
After a natural disaster, there is an urgent need to supply critical loads such as hospitals as soon as possible. Microgrid (MG) formation is one of the quickest ways to achieve this goal. However, in MG formation studies, there is a trade-off between maximizing the amount of restored loads and minimizing their risk of interruption due to the following aftershocks. For the former objective, the minimum number of MGs should be formed, whereas, for the latter objective, the maximum number of MGs should be configured. This paper tackles this contradictory situation by considering the failure risk of distribution feeders in its proposed optimization framework. In this paper, at first, a novel...

Calculation and Distribution of Transmission Loss in Restructured Power Systems

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ebrahimi Bojdani, Mohammad Reza (Author) ; Ehsan, Mehdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The electric power industry is experiencing important changes brought about by the deregulation. Electric power generators and users engage in power transactions which take place over the transmission system and create losses. Transmission losses represent up to 1⎯5% of the total generation, and cost millions of dollars per year. Consequently, the problem of “who should pay for losses” arises and the satisfactory sharing of the transmission system utilization costs among all market participants has become a key issue. Unfortunately, losses are expressed as a nonlinear function of line flows, and it becomes almost impossible to calculate exactly the losses that are incurred by each generator,...

    Abstract
The micro-scale channel creation in Osteochondral scaffolds is a prominent issue in tissue engineering. In this project we tried to identify the relevant parameters to obtain the method for injecting a biodegradable photo polymer to achieve a micro channel by predictable size.Due to inadequate accuracy in measuring the properties of the non –Newtonian working fluid, it was decided to use the Newtonian fluid equations in this study. The relevant equations for injecting the liquid under constant pressure were extracted. The modeling and design of micro syringe system was then completed. Using the made set up experiment to measure the fluid viscosity were performed. The next step was the...

Transmission Expansion Planning Considering Uncertainty in Generation and N-1 Criterion

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Karimi Gharigh, Mohammad Reza (Author) ; Ehsan , Mehdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In order to reduce investment and operation costs of the power systems, transmission expansion planning is inevitable. In fact, transmission expansion planning is to determine when, where and how many lines need to be added to power system with a minimum of investment and operating costs. In this thesis, transmission expansion planning has been performed at uncertainty in generation and N-1 criterion condition where uncertainty in generation means uncertainty in the moment of adding power plant to power system. In previous studies, transmission expansion planning was performed with DC-load flow in which, the power loss and voltage profiles were ignored due to the approximation in the...

    , Article IET Generation, Transmission and Distribution ; Volume 5, Issue 11 , 2011 , Pages 1173-1182 ; 17518687 (ISSN) Soroudi, A ; Caire, R ; Hadjsaid, N ; Ehsan, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
This study proposes a probabilistic dynamic model for multi-objective distributed generation (DG) planning, which also considers network reinforcement at presence of uncertainties associated with the load values, generated power of wind turbines and electricity market price. Monte Carlo simulation is used to deal with the mentioned uncertainties. The planning process is considered as a two-objective problem. The first objective is the minimisation of total cost including investment and operating cost of DG units, the cost paid to purchase energy from main grid and the network reinforcement costs. The second objective is defined as the minimisation of technical risk, including the probability...

    Abstract
The aim of this thesis is investigating the approaches proposed for controlling switched systems and designing a controller for MIMO switched systems. The system under consideration is in strict feedback form with unknown dynamics, unmodeled dynamics, state-dependent delays and disturbances and input nonlinearity (saturation, backlash, dead-zone). In this work, the unknown dynamics are estimated by an intelligent approximator. The arbitrary switching law is assumed and for control purpose the switching instances are not required. The backstepping technique has been utilize for controller design and by using a nonnegative switching function and a common lyapunov function, the closed loop...

    Abstract
There is a global tendency towards using Distributed Generation (DG) and renewable energy resources. Considering low utilization cost and low undesirable environmental effects, wind farms have become a considerable resource for producing electrical energy in many countries. Since Wind farms are not programmable and their power output which depends on weather and wind speed is uncertain, they create problems for utilizing electricity system. There are different methods for preserving system stability against the uncertainty of wind power plants. Optimal utilization of pumped storage and gas resources is one of the approaches for reducing production risk of wind farms. In this paper, it is...

Soil Moisture Content Estimation Based on Satellite Imagery

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Rabiei, Saman (Author) ; Tajrishy, Masoud (Supervisor) ; Jalilvand, Ehsan (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
The aim of this study is to provide an algorithm for estimating the Soil Moisture Content (SMC) using Sentinel satellite images for the Varamin and Karaj provinces. Soil moisture varies greatly due to various factors such as land surface changes (roughness, soil type, and vegetation cover), topography and weather conditions. Due to the high cost of traditional methods of measuring soil moisture and also the large spatial changes of soil moisture, the use of these methods to prepare high-precision maps and for long periods of time or in a global scale is not possible. This study examines the relationship between soil spectral reflection diagrams using optical images in the range of 400 to...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Afzali Pourfereydouni, Mohammad Mahdi (Author) ; Vafa, Ehsan (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The “hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal” axis is one of the most important axes of the human body, and cortisol is one of its key products, which plays an essential role in the immune system, stress management, and many diseases. Appropriate modeling and simulation of this axis can help us to understand how the body reacts to stress and inflammation, to examine relevant diseases, and how drugs affect the body. In this study, by combining an axial model of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis with a model of adrenal cells, a bi-level model including several time delays has been developed that can predict the effect of stress on this axis. Some parameters of the model have been modified through...

Data-driven Formulation of a Super Element for FE Analysis of Lattice Structures

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ashrafian, Ali (Author) ; Asghari, Mohsen (Supervisor) ; Hosseini, Ehsan (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Additive manufacturing enables fabricating lattice structures with tailored mechanical responses based on lattice materials. Full exploitation of such a possibility requires reliable and efficient mechanical analysis tools to be explored by topology optimization algorithms for designing the interior architecture of the structures to meet the desired mechanical behavior. However, detailed mechanical analysis of lattice-based structures using the conventional finite element approach is prohibitively expensive due to lattices’ complex and fine features that demand adopting very fine space discretization. As an alternative, equivalent models based on the homogenization principle have widely been...

Power System Frequency Estimation for Protection Application in Accordance with IEC 60255-181

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Abasnejad, Mohamad Ali (Author) ; Hajipour, Ehsan (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The frequency of the system is one of the important network parameters that must be continuously monitored. In new power networks, due to the fact that inverter loads and renewable power plants have increased, frequency estimation has faced many problems. Due to the fact that these renewable power plants have little inertia, the networks that include these power plants are faced with rapid frequency changes in the presence of network incidents and transients such as load shedding and power plant blackout or fault, and therefore they should Be equipped with accurate frequency relays or relays to detect the rate of frequency changes. Also, the increase in the amount of harmonic pollution of...
