    , Article IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery ; Vol. 29, issue. 1 , 2014 , pp. 72-80 ; ISSN: 08858977 Ghofrani-Jahromi, Z ; Mahmoodzadeh, Z ; Ehsan, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2014
    Abstract
Due to the liberalization of the electricity market and the introduction of distributed generation (DG), the importance of distribution loss allocation (LA) has increased. This paper presents a new method for distribution power LA in radial systems. The proposed method, which is based on the results of power flow and considers active and reactive power flows of lines for LA, is composed of three steps. In the first step, starting from the source nodes (i.e., the nodes whose generation is more than their load), the power loss allocated to all nodes is calculated and then the power loss allocated to the loads connected to each node is obtained. In the next step, the total power loss is...

IGDT based risk-constrained strategic bidding of GenCos considering bilateral contracts

    , Article 2013 21st Iranian Conference on Electrical Engineering, ICEE 2013 ; 2013 ; 9781467356343 (ISBN) Kazemi, M ; Mohammadi Ivatloo, B ; Ehsan, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
A new risk-constrained bidding curve construction method is presented in this paper. A Day-ahead energy market has been chosen for competition of GenCos and the Information Gap Decision Theory (IGDT) is used for modelling the Day-ahead market price uncertainty and its corresponding risk. The bilateral contracts of the GenCo are also considered in the proposed framework. A Bi-level optimization problem is incorporated in the proposed method to guarantee a pre-specified level of revenue. The proposed IGDT based method constructs the non-decreasing bidding curve while dispatching units based on the uncertain forecasted prices of the next-day market. The verification of the proposed method is...

Time-varying acceleration coefficients IPSO for solving dynamic economic dispatch with non-smooth cost function

    , Article Energy Conversion and Management ; Volume 56 , 2012 , Pages 175-183 ; 01968904 (ISSN) Mohammadi Ivatloo, B ; Rabiee, A ; Ehsan, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
The objective of the dynamic economic dispatch (DED) problem is to schedule power generation for the online units for a given time horizon economically, satisfying various operational constraints. Due to the effect of valve-point effects and prohibited operating zones (POZs) in the generating units cost functions, DED problem is a highly non-linear and non-convex optimization problem. The DED problem even may be more complicated if transmission losses and ramp-rate constraints are taken into account. This paper presents a novel and heuristic algorithm to solve DED problem of generating units, by employing time varying acceleration coefficients iteration particle swarm optimization...

    Abstract
This paper presented a combined scheduling and bidding algorithm for constructing the bidding curve of an electric utility that participated in the day-ahead energy markets. Day-ahead market price uncertainty was modeled using non-probabilistic information gap decision theory (IGDT). The considered utility consisted of generation units and a retailer part; the retailer part of the utility and its demand response program (DRP) could affect the utility's profit, which should be considered in the bidding strategy problem. The bidding strategy algorithm proposed in this paper dispatched units by optimizing the demand response programs of the retailer part. In addition, non-decreasing bidding...

    Abstract
One of the major problems in liberalized power markets is loss allocation. In this paper, a different method for allocating transmission losses to pool market participants is proposed. The proposed method is fundamentally based on decomposition of loss function and current projection concept. The method has been implemented and tested on several networks and one sample summarized in the paper. The results show that the method is comprehensive and fair to allocating the energy losses of a power market to its participants

A risk-constrained decision support tool for EV aggregators participating in energy and frequency regulation markets

    , Article Electric Power Systems Research ; Volume 185 , August , 2020 Habibifar, R ; Aris Lekvan, A ; Ehsan, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2020
    Abstract
The growing trend of electric vehicles (EVs) in recent years has led to the emergence of EV aggregators in electricity markets. Generally, the main goal of an EV aggregator is to buy electricity from the wholesale market in a cost-effective manner while satisfying the charging requirements of EV owners. Accordingly, this paper presents a decision support tool for EV aggregators which enables them to determine the optimal bidding strategy to effectively participate in the day-ahead and real-time energy, and frequency regulation markets. Indeed, the aggregator mainly obtains profit by selling energy during the high-price hours (via vehicle-to-grid (V2G) capability) and providing primary...

    Abstract
This paper presents a framework for expansion planning studies of distributed energy storage systems (DESSs) in high wind penetrated power systems. The main objective is to find optimal location and capacity of DESSs in the viewpoint of independent system operator (ISO) while ensuring the maximum usage of wind farms output generation. Three different criteria are introduced for expansion planning studies. Minimizing wind curtailment cost together with transmission congestion cost are considered to properly deal with the issues associated with the curtailment of wind energy and constraints of transmission network. Furthermore, the minimum normalized profit for all DESSs' owners needs to be...

Facilitating the Use of Photovoltaic Renewable Energy Sources Using Demand Response Taking into Account Uncertainty in Real Time Market Prices

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Nikbakht Dastjerdi, Mohammad (Author) ; Ehsan, Mehdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
With the expansion of the use of renewable photovoltaic sources in electricity generation, the problem of uncertainty in predicting the production capacity of these sources has become one of the most important challenges of power networks due to dependence on climatic conditions, which is a random and uncertain phenomenon. Eliminating or reducing the stated problem requires economic policies that hold the producers of these resources accountable for deviating from the promised products in the day-ahead market. This thesis, the first place, proposes a fuzzy-neural prediction method with minimal input information considering the speed and accuracy of the prediction, which reduces the...

    Abstract
This paper proposes a simultaneous approach to manage congestion, evaluate congestion cost, and to allocate this cost among consumers in a short-run market model. The proposed method consists of an iterative algorithm to search and apply a sequence of the best feasible bilateral power exchange among the generators that would optimally reduce and completely remove the congestion. The best exchanges are selected using sensitivity analysis and the AC load flow is used to apply the selected exchange on the system. Congestion cost is calculated using the change in generation cost and divided among the overloaded lines regarding the change in power flow of these lines, after applying the selected...

Turn-to-Turn Fault Detection in Power Transformers in the Presence of Inrush Current

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Fallah Mollamahmod, Mahdi (Author) ; Hajipour, Ehsan (Supervisor)
    Abstract
One of the most critical equipments in power grids are power transformers, which are vulnerable to damage due to the possibility of faults in its various components. A very common category of such faults is turn-to-turn fault in its winding. This fault initiates by the aging of the winding insulation with a short circuit of several adjacent loops to each other and if it is not detected quickly by the transformer protection, it will spread rapidly and can lead to irreparable failure in the transformer. Traditionally, turn-to-turn fault should be detected by mechanical pressure relays, however, due to the poor performance of these relays in the rapid detection of this type of fault, in the...

Power system transient stability improvement using fuzzy controlled STATCOM

    , Article 2006 International Conference on Power System Technology, POWERCON2006, Chongqing, 22 October 2006 through 26 October 2006 ; 2006 ; 1424401119 (ISBN); 9781424401116 (ISBN) Zolghadri, M. R ; Ghafori, A ; Ehsan, M ; Sharif University of Technology
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc  2006
    Abstract
In this paper a fuzzy logic based controller for STATCOM is used to improve power system transient stability. As opposed to the modern control theory, fuzzy logic design is not based on the mathematical model of the process. The controller designed using fuzzy logic implements human reasoning that can be programmed into fuzzy logic language (membership functions, rules and the rule interpretation). The nonlinear fuzzy controller is proposed to supply a supplementary control signal to STATCOM to increase the critical clearing time and overcome the uncertainties existing in the power systems. Proposed method is implemented in a single machine infinite bus system and the results are compared...

Optimal resilience-oriented microgrid formation considering failure probability of distribution feeders

    , Article Electric Power Systems Research ; Volume 209 , 2022 ; 03787796 (ISSN) Jahromi, S. N ; Hajipour, E ; Ehsan, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2022
    Abstract
After a natural disaster, there is an urgent need to supply critical loads such as hospitals as soon as possible. Microgrid (MG) formation is one of the quickest ways to achieve this goal. However, in MG formation studies, there is a trade-off between maximizing the amount of restored loads and minimizing their risk of interruption due to the following aftershocks. For the former objective, the minimum number of MGs should be formed, whereas, for the latter objective, the maximum number of MGs should be configured. This paper tackles this contradictory situation by considering the failure risk of distribution feeders in its proposed optimization framework. In this paper, at first, a novel...

    Abstract
This paper proposes a robust investment and operation model to attend the power and heat needs of a microgrid (MG) connected to the distribution system. The optimization algorithm decides on the best investment and operation of combined heat and power (CHP), boilers, PV power generation and battery energy storage systems (BESS). For the BESS, the algorithm estimates the optimal energy storage capacity (MWh) as well as the maximum hourly delivery capacity (MW). The non-linear and non-concave heat rate chart is recast by a mix-integer linear model to have a tractable and precise model. The model considers the uncertain in some parameters using probability density function (pdf) to portrait its...

Calculation and Distribution of Transmission Loss in Restructured Power Systems

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ebrahimi Bojdani, Mohammad Reza (Author) ; Ehsan, Mehdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The electric power industry is experiencing important changes brought about by the deregulation. Electric power generators and users engage in power transactions which take place over the transmission system and create losses. Transmission losses represent up to 1⎯5% of the total generation, and cost millions of dollars per year. Consequently, the problem of “who should pay for losses” arises and the satisfactory sharing of the transmission system utilization costs among all market participants has become a key issue. Unfortunately, losses are expressed as a nonlinear function of line flows, and it becomes almost impossible to calculate exactly the losses that are incurred by each generator,...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Sheydaeian, Esmat (Author) ; Durali, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Toyserkani, Ehsan (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
The micro-scale channel creation in Osteochondral scaffolds is a prominent issue in tissue engineering. In this project we tried to identify the relevant parameters to obtain the method for injecting a biodegradable photo polymer to achieve a micro channel by predictable size.Due to inadequate accuracy in measuring the properties of the non –Newtonian working fluid, it was decided to use the Newtonian fluid equations in this study. The relevant equations for injecting the liquid under constant pressure were extracted. The modeling and design of micro syringe system was then completed. Using the made set up experiment to measure the fluid viscosity were performed. The next step was the...

Transmission Expansion Planning Considering Uncertainty in Generation and N-1 Criterion

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Karimi Gharigh, Mohammad Reza (Author) ; Ehsan , Mehdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In order to reduce investment and operation costs of the power systems, transmission expansion planning is inevitable. In fact, transmission expansion planning is to determine when, where and how many lines need to be added to power system with a minimum of investment and operating costs. In this thesis, transmission expansion planning has been performed at uncertainty in generation and N-1 criterion condition where uncertainty in generation means uncertainty in the moment of adding power plant to power system. In previous studies, transmission expansion planning was performed with DC-load flow in which, the power loss and voltage profiles were ignored due to the approximation in the...
