Scheduling of Identical Parallel-batch Processing Machines with Variable Machine Capacity and None-identical Job Sizes

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hamedinia, Abdolghaium (Author) ; Kianfar, Ferydoon (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis, we consider the problem of scheduling parallel batching machines with different machine capacity and jobs of arbitrary sizes and processing times. The machines have identical processing velocity. The jobs are processed in batches given that the total size of jobs in a batch cannot exceed the machine capacity. Once a batch starts processing, no interruption is allowed until all the jobs are completed. First we present a mixed integer programming model of the problem. We show the computational complexity of the problem, and then we propose two heuristics, LPT-BF and LPT-FF with regard to constraints of problem. Finally, we generate different scales of instances to test the...

    , Article Computers and Operations Research ; Volume 36, Issue 6 , 2009 , Pages 1780-1788 ; 03050548 (ISSN) Mirmohammadi, H ; Shadrokh, S ; Kianfar, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
An optimal algorithm based on branch-and-bound approach is presented in this paper to determine lot sizes for a single item in material requirement planning environments with deterministic time-phased demand and constant ordering cost with zero lead time, where all-units discounts are available from vendors and backlog is not permitted. On the basis of the proven properties of optimal order policy, a tree-search procedure is presented to construct the sequence of optimal orders. Some useful fathom rules have been proven, which make the algorithm very efficient. To compare the performance of this algorithm with the other existing optimal algorithms, an experimental design with various...

Development of Continuous Kinetic Model for Visbreaking of Heavy Oil Cuts

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Shadbahr, Jalil (Author) ; Khorashe, Farhad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this study the kinetic modeling of visbreaking reactions of heavy oils was investigated using available experimental data from the literatures. The continuous lumping model was developed for kinetic analysis of visbreaking reactions. The normalized boiling point was used to describe the reactant mixture as a continuous mixture and the concentration distribution of the mixture would change under reaction conditions. The continuous model with five adjustable parameters was used to describe visbreaking reactions and these parameters were optimized for each feed and reaction temperatures in the range of 400 to 430ºC using the available experimental data. Therefore for a special feed in a...

Modeling of Side Reactions in Propane Dehydrogenation Over Pt-Sn/γ-Al2O3 Catalyst

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Farjoo, Afrooz (Author) ; Khorasheh, Farhad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The kinetics of side reactions in dehydrogenation of propane over a supported platinum catalyst modified by tin was investigated. Catalytic dehydrogenation over a commercial Pt-Sn/γ-Al2O3 was carried out in a laboratory-scale plug-flow reactor at 580 to 620oC under atmospheric pressure. Several kinetic models derived from different reaction mechanisms were tested using experimental data obtained over a range of reaction conditions. It was found that the kinetics of the main dehydrogenation reaction was best described in terms of a Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism where adsorption of propane was the rate controlling step. Simple power low rate expressions were used to express the kinetics of...

Investigation of Removing Idiosyncratic Price Distortions On Manufacturing TFP in Iran

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Motavasseli, Ali (Author) ; Nili, Farhad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Government intervention in markets may go beyond the market regulation. Interventions may cause some idiosyncratic price distortions. It means the relative prices of factors to become different among firms. Therefore, micro conditions for firms will be changed. These will result in misallocation of factor production between firms and change in manufacturing TFP. According to data from about 14000 medium and small industrial firms in Iran, removing misallocation of production factors (capital and energy) and output idiosyncratic distortions between industrial firms would result in 115 percent increase in manufacturing TFP.

Kinetic Modeling of Coke Formation in PDH over Pt-Sn/Al2O3 in Presence of Oxygenated Additives

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Samavati, Abolfazl (Author) ; Khorasheh, Farhad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Propylene, as one of the most important raw materials of petrochemical industries, is produced through different methods. One of the major methods is propane dehydrogenation. This reaction is endothermic and many by-products will be produced in high temperature. Therefore catalytic dehydrogenation is preferred. Reduction in catalyst's activity and too many side reactions are the most important problems. Coke formation is the most effective reason of deactivation. Main source of coke is propylene. Experiments show that very small amount of water presence within reaction can reduce rate of coke formation. Water content growth does not always increase activity. If water be more than optimum...

The results showed that a small amount of water and methanol can improve the performance of catalyst and also, increase the selectivity to COx. Addition the 0.5, 0.45, 0.3 water and 0.1, 0.05, 0.02 methanol are the optimum amount of these oxygenated compounds in order at...

Measurement of the B-Tagging Efficiency in the CMS Experiment with the First LHC Collisions

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Jafari, Abideh (Author) ; Ardalan, Farhad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Jets originating from bottom (b) quarks, play an important role in the study of Standard Model processes together with the search for new physics. In the CMS experiment a considerable e?ort is dedicated to the development and the performance study of so-called b-tagging algorithms. On the other hand, the top quark which is produced in pair (tt¯) with a high rate at the LHC, decays near 99% of the time to a b-quark. Hence it provides a rich source of b-quark jets, suitable for b-jet identi?cation studies. In this thesis, a fully data-driven method to measure the b-tagging e?ciency, using top quark events in its semi-electron ?nal state, is developed. The results of the application of the...

Studying and Comparing Agile and Lean Supply Chain Models and Determining the Optimum Model Using Genetic Algorithm

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Daei, Mohammad (Author) ; Ghasemi, Farhad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
As you know in lean supply chains, it is tried to: reduce the wastes of resources and achieve more production with lower consumption of resources. This system is very well suited for many supply chains in which the final determinant factors are price and quality. In contrast, recently, the concept of agile supply chain has been introduced, insisting on flexibility and high service level. Opposite to lean supply chain, agile supply chain needs safety stock to be able to respond to market’s changes.
Regarding the dissimilarities of these models –including the disagreement in the allocation of safety stock to nodes– In this thesis, in addition to studying and comparing these two approaches,...

The Impact of House’s Recession on Banks’ Default Rate In The Framework of Stress Testing

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Faraji, Sara (Author) ; Nili, Farhad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The aim of this paper is to perform macro stress test for one of Iran’s private banks using bank’s quarterly data from Q-4 1383 to Q-4 1389. To do this, the relation of bank’s default rate with macroeconomic indicators like house prices and the growth rate of value added of services; as macroeconomic risk factors; was investigated by a linear model. Results show that the bank’s default rate has a negative relation with both risk factors.Stress testing, using monte carlo simulation; shows that reverse shocks to both house prices and the growth rate of value added of services leads to severe increase in bank’s default rate; so that with decrease of both house prices to 4 million rials at...

    Abstract
An industrial scale reactor for light olefinsproduction was modelledusing the oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) of light paraffinsin a multi-tubular reactor system involving 10000 small diameter tubes immersed in a shell with proper liquid-cooled flows. Here a theory-based pseudo-homogeneous 1-D model describing the operation of a fixed bed reactor for the ODHparaffinstoolefins over a Ni-Nb-O mixed oxide catalyst (for ethane) and over a V2O5/γ-Al2O3catalyst (for Propane),was employed. The paraffin and oxygen conversions, gas process and coolant temperatures, as well as other parameters affecting the reactor performance, including pressure, were examined. Furthermore, the applied model showed...

Impact of Subsidies on Evolution of Fertility and Human Capital in the Iranian Economy

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Farrokhi, Farid (Author) ; Nili, Farhad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
On the contrary to common explanations of fertility transition in the Iraninan Economy there has been a growing human capital without decline of fertility for some decades followed by a rapid fall in fertility without a higher growth of human capital during the next decades. Accounting for these facts we propose a new link between subsidies financed by exogenous oil revenue and the evolution of fertility and human capital. While the educational subsidy accelerates the growth of human capital, the presence of financial subsidies keeps fertility from declining. Then, fertility declines with sizeable delay but sharply because (i) high fertility in first generations implies a growth rate of...

Portfolio Management with Robust Optimization Approaches

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hosseini, Maryam (Author) ; Kiyanfar, Farhad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Todays, one of the most important problems is optimal allocation of capital to different investment options that many researchers studied about this problem and presented a lot of solutions. In this thesis, we solve portfolio optimization problem to maximize the return of investment. The options of investment are different kinds of stocks, gold coins and we consider bank deposits as a risk free asset. We apply the problem in multi period and we can buy and sell stocks and gold coins in each period. To improve the efficiency of the proposed models, we use real data and consider transaction fees. The return of some options is uncertain, so we use robust optimization approach. At first we apply...
