, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Kiani, Mohammad Mahdi (Author) ; Shabany, Mahdi (Supervisor) ; Mohammadzade, Hoda (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Hypertension precvalence is 24 and 20.5 percent in men and women, respectively. Continuous Blood Pressure monitoring can provide invaluable information about individuals’ health conditions. However, BP is conventionally measured using inconvenient cuff-based instruments, which prevents continuous BP monitoring. This work presents an efficient algorithm, based on the Pulse Arrival Time (PAT), extracted from Electrocardiogram (ECG) and Photopletysmograph (PPG), for the continuous and cuff-less estimation of the Systolic Blood Pressure (SBP), Diastolic Blood Pressure (DBP), and Mean Arterial Pressure (MAP) values. Methods: The proposed framework estimates the BP values through processing vital...

    Abstract
Inclusion of nano-clays into hydrogels is an efficient approach to produce nanocomposite hydrogels. The introduction of nano-clay into hydrogels causes an increase in water absorbency. In the present work, Nanocomposite hydro-gels based on kappa-carrageenan were synthesized using sodium montmorillonite as nano-clay. Acrylamide and meth-ylenebisacrylamide were used as monomer and crosslinker, respectively. The structure of nanocomposite hydrogels was investigated by XRD and SEM techniques. Swelling behavior of nanocomposite hydrogels was studied by varying clay and carrageenan contents as well as methylenebisacrylamide concentration. An optimum swelling capacity was achieved at 12% of sodium...

    Abstract
A 6-bit passive phase shifter for 2.5- to 3.2-GHz frequency band has been designed and implemented in a standard 0.18- μm CMOS technology. A new switched-network topology has been proposed for implementing the 5.625 ° phase shift step. The insertion loss of the circuit is compensated with an on-chip bidirectional amplifier. The measured return losses of the circuit are better than 8 dB with output 1-dB compression point of +9.5 dBm in the transmit mode and noise figure of 7.1 dB in the receive mode. The fabricated phase shifter demonstrates an average rms phase error of less than 2° over the entire operation bandwidth, which makes it suitable for high-precision applications

    , Article Journal of Alloys and Compounds ; Volume 490, Issue 1-2 , February , 2010 , Pages 572-575 ; 09258388 (ISSN) Babakhani, A ; Ziaei, S. M. R ; Kiani Rashid, A. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
It is known that the thermomechanical processing is one of the most important techniques for improving quality and mechanical properties of microalloyed steels. In this paper, the main parameters of hot forging (preheat temperature, strain and post-forging cooling rate) on the primary austenite grain size of vanadium microalloyed steel (30MSV6) were studied. From this investigation, it was found that increasing preheat temperature from 1150 °C to 1300 °C will result in a decrease in grain size number. Furthermore, it has shown that as the strain increases, the austenite grain size number increases, as is evident for the two cooling rates of 2.5 °C/s and 1.5 °C/s for primary austenite....

Experimental Study of the Effect of Wing Flapping on the Aerodynamic Performance of Tail and the Stability of a Flapping Wing Air Vehicle

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mesmarian, Mohammad Navid (Author) ; Pourtakdoust, Hossein (Supervisor) ; Kiani, Maryam (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
In adaptation with nature, Flapping Wing Arial Robots (FWARs) are flying vehicles that use wing flapping motion to produce lift and thrust forces simultaneously. Wing oscillating motion of FWARs in turn creates an unsteady and turbulent flow field around them that makes their aerodynamic modeling and analysis a complex and formidable task. As a result, experimental aerodynamic investigation of FWARs has been the focus of many researchers in the last few years. Inspired by nature, Bird-like FWARs utilize a tail as an augmented aerodynamic surface during their flight motion. In turn the tail aerodynamics that in general plays an important role in flight stability and control is adversely...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Nasihati Gourabi, Forough (Author) ; Pourtakdoust, Hossein (Supervisor) ; Kiani, Maryam (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The problem of concurrent attitude and orbit estimation (CAOE) of satellite using its surface thermal data is studied and investigated in the present dissertation. Considering various uncertainties associated with the satellite system and its surrounding with regards to thermal issues, the dissertation subject and its application to CAOE is challenging and of importance. To this aim, the space thermal model for low Earth orbiting (LEO) satellite is initially reviewed and presented. Since the Sun and the Earth are considered as significant sources of radiation for near Earth space systems, the view factor is a key parameter for orbit observability and estimation via surface thermal data....

    Abstract
Computer base and simulation technique have been applied for modeling the semi-solid die filling and part of the solidification process of aluminum A356 alloy. A fairly simple one-phase rheological model has been implemented into a fluid flow finite element software Procast, to solve the partial differential equations. This model is purely viscous nature and is implemented in the power law cut-off model of Procast. The constitutive parameters of this model were determined for a rheocast A356 alloy. Using these parameters and comparing the simulation results with experimental data showed good correlation with the model prediction. The designed die for rheocasting was applied for the...

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Chaharlang Kiani, Kiarash (Author) ; Mazaheri, Karim (Supervisor) ; Karimi, Mohsen (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
The present thesis is devoted to deeply reconsider the anti-vortex film cooling method and its undiscovered features using numerical optimization and advanced turbulence models. In this regards, a modified turbulent heat-flux model was developed to enhance the predictions in complex flow fields with highly anisotropy and non-equilibrium flow/thermal features. Next, the model was introduced to ANSYS FLUENT 16.0 package to prepare a more accurate flow solver. Then, the solver was coupled with an in-house Differential-Evolution (DE) optimization algorithm to find the optimum configurations of anti-vortex holes for several flow and geometric conditions such as flat-plate, convex/concave surfaces...

    Abstract
In the present study, the roll bonding behaviour of Al-3003/Al-4043 and Al-3003/Zn sheets were compared. The bi-layer sheets were produced by a roll bonding process at different reductions in thickness and rolling temperatures. The joint strengths of the sheets were evaluated by peel and bend testing before and after supplemental annealing treatment. The peeled surfaces were examined using a scanning electron microscope. The results indicated that the Al-3003/Al-4043 sheets were bonded with higher joint strength and lower threshold reductions in thickness with respect to the Al-3003/Zn sheets. In contrast to the Al-3003/Zn sheets, significant improvement was observed in the joint strength of...

Computational Simulation of High Density Ratio Drop Deformation and Breakup, Using Lattice Boltzmann Method

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Kiani, Mehran (Author) ; Taeibi Rahni, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Karbaschi, Mohsen (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Deformation and breakup of drops are the basisof many interfacial flow studies and appear in a number of industrial applications, e.g., spray painting, spray combustion, emulsion, foam, sedimentation, and rain. Following their formation, drops may enter a region where hydrodynamicforces are large enough to cause their significant deformation and breakup. When a drop breaks apart into a multitude of small fragments due to disruptive hydrodynamicforces, the process is termed secondary atomization or breakup. Due to many engineering and scientific applications of multiphase and multi-component flows, they have been the main topic of many researchers for many years. Particularly, interfacial...

On the existence of nowhere-zero vectors for linear transformations

    Abstract
A matrix A over a field F is said to be an AJT matrix if there exists a vector x over F such that both x and Ax have no zero component. The Alon-Jaeger-Tarsi (AJT) conjecture states that if F is a finite field, with |F|≥4, and A is an element of GL n (F), then A is an AJT matrix. In this paper we prove that every nonzero matrix over a field F, with |F|≥3, is similar to an AJT matrix. Let AJTn (q) denote the set of n×n, invertible, AJT matrices over a field with q elements. It is shown that the following are equivalent for q≥3 : (i) AJTn (q)=GL n (q) ; (ii) every 2n×n matrix of the form (A{divides}B)t has a nowhere-zero vector in its image, where A,B are n×n, invertible, upper and lower...

    Abstract
Attitude Determination (AD) is one of the key requirements of many current and emerging remote sensing missions. As such AD has been traditionally accomplished through a variety of algorithms and measurement models pertinent to sensing mechanisms. The current paper addresses conceptual validation and utility of a novel radiation based heat (measurement) model for space application. The proposed new Heat Attitude (HA) model utilizes temperature data to relate the Satellite Surfaces’ (SS) Net Heat Flux (NHF) to attitude assuming that the satellite navigational data are available. As Sun and the Earth are considered the main external sources of radiation, their effects are modeled for the SS...

    Abstract
Graphitization in steels is a subject which has been studied temporarily in past decades. The importance of this phenomenon is due to the fact that graphite formation in steels can ease machining treatment and increase cold-work capability of steels. Weight reduction of the parts and the dedicated bioenvironmental properties of these steels are considered as a valuable replacement for lead containing steels for researchers. Anyway there has been always the assumption that this operation is long and not economically cost effective. For this reason due to the different conditions of applied heat treatments, the effects of the temperature and the time period of heat treatment on the...
