    Abstract
In the present paper, phase and microstructural characterization of low carbon MgO-C refractories with addition of Fe-catalyzed phenolic resins as binder were investigated. Initially, phenolic resin was modified using various amounts of Fe particles as catalyst originated from iron nitrate ([Fe(NO3)3·9H2O]). The MgO-C matrix compositions were prepared by using 7% of modified phenolic resin, shaped and cured at 200 °C for 24 h. The cured samples were coked in the temperature range from 800 to 1400 °C and then characterized by XRD and FE-SEM techniques. Based on attained results, in-situ graphitic carbons, particularly in carbon nanotubes (CNTs) network were gradually formed from Fe-catalyzed...

    Abstract
In this research study, a comparative evaluation of the additional impact of nanometer-sized tetravalent oxides [Zirconia (ZrO2), Titania (TiO2), and Silica (SiO2)] on the properties and performance of Doloma-Magnesia (MgO-CaO) ceramic refractories, with an emphasis on their hydration resistance improvement, has been done. For this purpose, from 0 to 2.5 wt% ZrO2, TiO2, and SiO2 nanometer-sized particles have been added to the Doloma-Magnesia compositions. After formulation and mixing of the starting materials, the pressed samples (at 150 MPa) were tempered (at 250 °C for 12 h) and fired in a shuttle furnace (at 1650 °C for 3 h). The physical, mechanical, and thermo-mechanical properties of...

    Abstract
Molecular machines and surface rolling molecules show great potential to accomplish different tasks in several fields, such as bottom-up assembly and nanomanipulation. Many researchers have investigated molecular machines, most of which was on a flat single-crystal substrate. In this paper, we studied the influence of vacancies in different sizes on the motion of a nanocar, a nanotruck, and C60 on a gold substrate at different temperatures by employing classical all-atom molecular dynamics. At the temperature of 200 K, a hole or vacancy appears as a repellent obstacle in the path of C60, and at higher temperatures, C60 can enter this hole. Although C60 has enough energy to escape single-atom...

    Abstract
Molecular machines, such as nanocars, have shown promising potential for various tasks, including manipulation at the nanoscale. In this paper, we examined the influence of temperature gradients on nanocar and nanotruck motion as well as C60 - as their wheel - on a flat gold surface under various conditions. We also compared the accuracy and computational cost of two different approaches for generating the temperature gradient. The results show that severe vibrations and frequent impacts of gold atoms at high temperatures increase the average distance of C60 from the substrate, reducing its binding energy. Moreover, the temperature field drives C60 to move along the temperature variation;...

    Abstract
The nitrate-citrate gel exhibits auto-catalytic behavior, which can be used to synthesize nanocrystalline YIG powders. In this study, yttrium iron garnet (Y3Fe5O12) nanocrystalline powders were prepared by a sol-gel auto-combustion process. The influence of metal nitrates to citric acid molar ratio (MN/CA) of the precursor solution on the combustion behavior and crystallite size of synthesized powders was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermal analyses (DTA/TGA) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results show that with increasing MN/CA value, the combustion rate increases and the single-phase YIG forms at a higher temperature. The crystallite size of the single phase YIG...

    2008
    Abstract
Nanocrystalline Y3-xMMxFe5O12 powders (MM denotes Misch-metal, x = 0.0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, and 1.0) were synthesized by a sol-gel combustion method. Magnetic properties and crystalline structures were investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), and a scanning electron microscope. The XRD patterns showed that the single-phase garnet of Y3-xMMxFe5O12 was formed at x values ≤ 1.0. The saturation magnetization of powders increased with decreasing MM content and reached the maximum value at Y3 Fe5O12. The crystallite size of powders calcined at 800°C for 3 h was in the range of 38-53 nm. © 2008 American Ceramic Society

Oxidation mechanism of C in MgO-C refractory bricks

    , Article Journal of the American Ceramic Society ; Volume 89, Issue 4 , 2006 , Pages 1308-1316 ; 00027820 (ISSN) Sadrnezhaad, S. K ; Mahshid, S ; Hashemi, B ; Nemati, Z. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2006
    Abstract
Kinetics of oxidation of MgO-C refractory bricks containing 14.3% graphite, 80.9% magnesia, and 4.8% phenolic resin is investigated comprehensively. Effect of temperature and grain size distribution on the rate of oxidation of graphite is evaluated by application of a mathematical model developed on the basis of shrinking core/progressive conversion regime to the gas-solid processes involved. Incorporation of the experimental data into the mathematical model indicates that a mixed controlling mechanism governs the oxidation rate. Three activation energies were recognized: (a) 68 kJ/mol for chemical adsorption of gas on the surface of the graphite flakes, (b) 22 kJ/mol for pore diffusion of...

    Abstract
Objective(s): Bioresorbable scaffolds have been advocated as the new generation in interventional cardiology because they could provide temporary scaffolds and then disappear with resorption. Although, the available stents in clinical trials exhibited biosafety, efficacy, no death, and no apparent thrombosis, Mg-substrate degradation on drug release has not been investigated. Materials and Methods: Therefore, more research has been needed to legitimize the replacement of current stents with Mg-based stents. UV-Vis spectrophotometer, scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), pH measurement, H2 evolution, and corrosion tests determined the change in hybrid properties and...

    Abstract
The morphological characteristics and electronic structure of the BaTiO 3 films grown by pulsed-laser deposition technique have been investigated. AFM and FE-SEM images reveal columnar growth characteristic of these films. Utilizing spectrophotometer, optical band gap of the films were reckoned to be about 3.76 eV. Both dα/dE and PL vs. E plots reveal numerous luminance states in the gap. Despite the presence of many luminance faults in the gap, cations manage to preserve their electronic states

Alumina-MWCNT composite was densified by microwave sintering. CNTs were coated with boehmite nanoparticles to enhance their distribution in composite samples. Calcination temperature of composite powder was determined by TGA analysis (5 °C/min). Samples containing 0 and 1vol%CNT were produced by cold isostatic pressing at 180 MPa. Microwave sintering (1520 °C for 45 min) was conducted under the flow of argon. Phase analysis of the calcined composite powder showed complete transformation of boehmite into gamma-alumina. The relative densities were 99.3% and 98.1% for monolithic alumina and composite, respectively. CNT addition improved the fracture toughness of alumina by ~37%. SEM images...
