    Abstract
Of particular interest to restrict the short-circuit level of interconnected power systems is to exploit fault current limiter (FCL) technologies. FCLs let the system planners devise new reliable and rather economical substation configurations and provide the possibility of proposing a promising cost-effective and prompt solution to the fault current over duty problem in the existing substations. This paper attempts to assess reliability of substation architectures accommodating the FCL operation and, besides, numerically investigates the FCL's impacts on the substation reliability indices. In order to clarify the proposed approach, two case studies with and without FCL are analyzed and...

The results of this research were compared with conventional wax model production methods. The criteria of such comparison were based upon parameters such as time, cost, and other related characteristics, which resulted in saving of 50% in time and 60% in cost. In this research,...

Price elasticity of gasoline smuggling: a semi-structural estimation approach

    , Article Energy Economics ; Volume 71 , 2018 , Pages 171-185 ; 01409883 (ISSN) Ghoddusi, H ; Rafizadeh, N ; Rahmati, M. H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2018
    Abstract
We estimate the price elasticity of the demand for gasoline smuggling in Iran. For this purpose, we employ a detailed panel of monthly gasoline consumption data from 160 distribution hubs during the period 2005–2014. We apply two different approaches which are diff-in-diff and panel data estimations. The results suggest that the foreign-to-home gasoline price ratios have a significant impact on the time-varying elasticity of demand. This finding supports the hypothesis that an increase in domestic gasoline prices will significantly reduce the demand for smuggling. In addition, as the distance of a region from its closest higher-price neighboring country diminishes, the price elasticity of...

    Abstract
In this paper, we consider the exponential stabilization problem of a Timoshenko beam with interior local controls with input delays. In the past, most of the stabilization results for the Timoshenko beam were on the boundary control with input delays. In the present paper we shall extend the method treating the boundary control with delays to the case of interior local control with delays. Essentially we design a new dynamic feedback control laws that stabilizes exponentially the system. Detail of the design procedure of the dynamic feedback controller and analysis of the exponential stability are given. © 2018 World Scientific and Engineering Academy and Society. , M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Choubdaran Varnosfaderani, Ali (Author) ; Rahmati, Mohammad Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In order to estimate the inter-sectoral labor mobility costs in Iran’s economy, in this research, we design and estimate a structural model of worker’s decisions. The estimation method used in this research is Simulated Method of Moments and we have used Labor Force Survey and Household Expenditure and Income Survey in order to extract necessary moments. Our findings show that: 1) inter-sectoral labor mobility costs in Iran’s economy are large and they are between 3 to 11 times the annual income. 2) These costs are higher for female, rural, older and high-educated workers. 3) If these costs were zero, production in tradable and non-tradable sectors would have been 36 and 16 percent larger...

Improvement of LC Oscillators Phase Noise by Using N-Path Filters

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Bayazi, Mohammad (Author) ; Kavehvash, Zahra (Supervisor) ; Atarodi, Mojtaba (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
A novel low noise quadrature voltage-controlled oscillator (QVCO) with differential N-path filter is proposed in 0.18-μm CMOS technology. The said QVCO benefits from a cross-coupled structure and a current-reuse technology to produce the quadrature signal and to save power consumption and area, respectively. The new architecture reduces the phase noise by 8dBc/Hz at a 1MHz offset frequency for 2.4GHz oscillation frequency. QVCO consumes 9.8mW from 1.8V power supply when operating at 2.4GHz. QVCO has a frequency tuning range from 2.4GHz to 3GHz and achieves a FOM of 191dB at 1MHz offset. Switches of N-path filter are controlled by outputs of QVCO, so the center frequency of N-path filter is...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Abolqasemi Kharanaq, Fatemeh (Author) ; Nasiri-Gheidari, Zahra (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Today, position sensors are inseparable parts of engineering systems. Encoders and resolvers are the most common types of position sensors that are widely used in industries. Due to low price and high accuracy, encoders are the first choice of engineers. Yet, their performance deteriorates under harsh conditions, namely wide temperature range operation, intense vibration and polluted environments. On the contrary, resolvers are rigid and robust which make them resistant to polluted environments.According to principle of operation, resolvers are divided to two main types: variable reluctance (VR) and wound-rotor (WR). Researches has shown that wound rotor resolvers have better performance...

    Abstract
Recently, there has been an increasing trend towards the use of millimeter-wave (MMW) imaging in various detection applications. This is mainly due to two factors: first, the radiation in the MMW band (30–300 GHz) is nonionizing and safe to use and second, it is able to penetrate through most dielectric materials as well as poor weather conditions, such as smoke and fog. With these potentials, MMW imaging has been used in a variety of applications, including target surveillance and precision target imaging, safe aircraft landing, highway traffic monitoring in fog, remote sensing for civil applications and concealed threat object detection for security concerns. Moreover, it can also find...

Optimal Design and Performance Analysis of Linear Variable Reluctance Multi-Turn Resolver

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Seyed Bouzari, Ali (Author) ; Nasiri Gheidari, Zahra (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Nowadays, with the increasing need of various industries and applications to directly create linear motion, linear resolvers are attracting more attention than ever. Achieving high accuracy as well as measuring absolute position leads to the introduction of a new generation of resolvers, called multi-turn resolvers. Usually, a multi-turn resolver consisted of two individual resolvers in one frame, while using a common core for both resolvers can help to make the multi-turn sensor smaller, cheaper, and lighter. Nevertheless, the studies conducted on linear and multi-turn resolvers are very limited. Therefore, this research proposes an integrated core linear variable reluctance multi-turn...

    Abstract
Today, the “wireless” is used almost synonymously with radio-frequency (RF) technologies as a result of the wide-scale deployment and utilization of wireless RF devices and systems. The RF band ranges from 300 kHz to 300 GHz and its use is regulated by regional and international agencies. With the ever-growing popularity of data-heavy wireless communications, wireless products and services, the demand for RF spectrum is outstripping supply, which causes the spectrum congestion. Therefore, the time has come to seriously consider other viable options for wireless communication using the upper parts of the electromagnetic spectrum. In this way, the optical band which includes infrared, visible,...
