    Abstract
Extensive wind-tunnel tests were performed on a Y-shaped diverterless supersonic inlet (DSI). All tests were conducted at a free stream Mach number of M∞ 1.65, the design Mach number for this inlet, and at both zero degrees angle of attack (AOA) and angle of sideslip (AOS). The experiments were performed at various inlet operating conditions comprising supercritical, critical, and subcritical conditions that covered almost all ranges of the engine operating for this DSI. The results showed that the DSI had relatively acceptable performance characteristics when operating at its design condition. A symmetric supersonic flow pattern was observed at both supercritical and critical operating...

A new colloidal technique for the synthesis of lead sulfide nanoparticles

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 10, Issue 3 , 2003 , Pages 357-360 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Askari, M ; Ghamsari, M. S ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this paper, the use of colloid chemistry in the synthesis of 5 A° lead sulfide semiconductor nanoparticles has been described. Here, hydrogen sulfide gas dissolved in water is used for the chemical reaction, instead of purging the H2S gas into the solution, which has an influence on particle size. In this technique, the growth of particles was controlled by the addition of EDTA. A fast evolution of the optical absorption spectrum demonstrated the following synthesis. Soon after synthesis reaction, the sample exhibits a structural absorption spectrum with one well-defined peak in a 240 nm wavelength. The absorption spectrum shows a featureless structure, with no tail near the absorption...

    Abstract
A series of wind-tunnel tests were conducted on a Y-shaped diverterless supersonic inlet (DSI) in order to investigate its performance at various operating conditions. The present DSI was designed for a freestream Mach number of M∞ 1.65. The experiments were performed at supercritical, critical, and subcritical operating conditions and at 0 deg angle of attack and angle of side slip. The results showed that the present DSI had an acceptable performance at its design condition. A symmetric supersonic flow pattern was observed at both supercritical and critical operating conditions. At low subcritical operating conditions, the supersonic flow pattern remained symmetric too. However, at high...

    Abstract
This paper addresses design of an observer-based adaptive fuzzy controller for a class of single-input-single-output (SISO) nonlinear systems with unknown dynamics subject to input nonlinearity and unknown direction. The proposed controller is singularity free. A high-gain observer is designed to estimate the unmeasured states, and the Lipschitz condition for proving boundedness of the estimated states is relaxed. The Nussbaum function is used to handle the unknown virtual control directions and the backstepping technique has been applied for controller design. It is proved that all closed loop signals are semi-globally uniformly ultimately bounded (SGUUB) and the output tracking error...

    Abstract
In this paper, an alternative way of harvesting energy from ambient vibration is investigated through proposing a novel inertial energy harvester using magnetic shape memory alloys (MSMAs). To this end, a clamped-clamped beam is coupled with MSMA units which are attached to its roots. A shock load is applied to a proof mass in the middle of the beam. The beam vibration causes longitudinal strain in the MSMAs and as a result the magnetic flux alters in the coils wounding around the MSMA units and produce an AC voltage. To have a reversible strain in MSMAs, a bias magnetic field is applied in transverse direction of the MSMA units. The large scale vibration of Euler-Bernoulli beam is modeled...

    Abstract
The anionic surfactant linear alkylbenzene sulfonate (LAS) is a major chemical constituent of detergent formulation. Regarding the recalcitrant nature of sulfonoaromatic compounds, discharging these substances into wastewater collection systems is a real environmental issue. A study on LAS biodegradation based on bioelectrochemical treatment and in the form of developing a single-chamber microbial fuel cell with air cathode is reported in the present work. Pretreatment study showed LAS concentration of 60 ppm resulted in the highest anaerobic LAS removal of 57%; so, this concentration was chosen to run the MFC. After the sustained anodic biofilm was formed, LAS degradation rate during 4 days...

    Abstract
Linear alkylbenzene sulfonate (LAS), one of the most widely used synthetic surfactants in laundry detergent industry, is considered a hazardous contaminant in wastewater. In the present study, a microbial fuel cell (MFC) based biosensor is developed to quantitively determine the LAS concentration in wastewater. To do so, the developed MFC is fed with LAS concentration of 60 mg l−1. Finally, a sustained biofilm is formed after almost 34 days and the highest open circuit potential of 425 mV is recorded. The maximum power and current densities of 75 mW m−3 and 663 mA m−3 are obtained, respectively; and the internal resistance of the MFC-based biosensor is calculated to be about 1 kΩ. After 98...

Effect of the shear loading direction on shear behavior of rock and finding new empirical method for determining JRC by fractal dimension

    , Article Annual Conference of the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering 2007: Where the Road Ends, Ingenuity Begins, Yellowknife, NT, 6 June 2007 through 9 June 2007 ; Volume 1 , 2007 , Pages 259-267 Khosravi, A ; Sadaghiani, M. H ; Askari, M ; Khosravi, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Effect of different conditions on shear behaviour of rock has been investigated by various researchers. As known, in larger scale the continuity of the rock material is interrupted by separated planes such as bedding planes, faults, shear zones, closure and the behaviour converts to be inelastic and anisotropic. Generally, discontinuities appear repeatedly in more than one preferential direction, creating a three dimensional structure, reducing its stiffness and shear strength as mechanical effects and increasing its transport velocity associated with discontinuity flow as hydraulic effects. They also make rock behavior more complex and different compared to the behavior of soil. According...

    Abstract
The ion exchange process is a promising method for lithium extraction from brine and seawater having low concentrations of this element. To achieve this goal, it is vital to use an effective adsorbent with maximum lithium adsorption potential together with a stable structure during extraction and insertion of the ions. In this study, titanium dioxide and then lithium titanate spinel with nanotube morphology was synthesized via a simple two-step hydrothermal process. The produced Li4Ti5O12 spinel ternary oxide nanotube with about 70 nm diameter was then treated with dilute acidic solution in order to prepare an adsorbent suitable for lithium adsorption from local brine. Morphological and...

    Abstract
Splashing in the Peirce Smith copper converter was investigated using the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method. A model 50 cm in diameter (one eighth of the actual convertor) was made to verify results. The ffect of air flow rate and the distance of air blowers from the surface were identified as two major contributors to splashing and their effect on splashing was investigated. Using C++ based on SPH method, a model, geometrically identical to the physical model, was designed for simulation and verification of results. It was found that splashing may be reduced by as much as 85% by controlling the air flow rate into the convertor

    Abstract
This paper addresses the design of an observer based adaptive neural controller for a class of strict-feedback nonlinear uncertain systems subject to input delay, saturation and unknown direction. The input delay has been handled using an integral compensator term in the controller design. A neural network observer has been developed to estimate the unmeasured states. In the observer design, the Lipschitz condition has been relaxed. To solve the problem of unknown control directions, the Nussbaum gain function has been applied in the backstepping controller design. “The explosion of complexity” occurred in the traditional backstepping technique has been avoided utilizing the dynamic surface...

    Abstract
This study investigates acoustic energy harvesting via magnetic shape memory alloys (MSMA). The acoustic pressure impacts the neck of a Helmholtz resonator (HR) with a flexible face made of an elastic membrane. The design of the proposed energy harvester let radial force in the membrane be tunable. An MSMA is clamped to the membrane, and a proof mass is attached to the other end. The enhanced sound pressure vibrates the membrane and, therefore, excites the base of the MSMA specimen made of Ni-Mn-Ga to apply strain to it. Inserting strain onto the MSMA leads to variant reorientation and change of magnetization vectors, resulting in a change in flux passing through the pick-up coil. Therefore,...

    Abstract
In this paper, acoustic energy harvesting using a tunable Helmholtz Resonator (HR) is investigated. The frequency of resonator can be changed by varying the radial force in a membrane which is used in one of its face. Applying acoustic pressure, vibrates the air inside HR neck and therefore changes pressure in HR chamber which results in membrane vibration. Attached magnet to the membrane will vibrate and its relative motion to a fixed coil generates voltage on the basis of Faraday's law of induction. Modeling approach is developed considering equivalent nonlinear membrane stiffness and coupling of electrical circuit and mechanical device. At the end, system behavior is studied numerically...

    Abstract
Titanium type lithium ion-sieve nanotubes synthesized by the hydrothermal method were extensively explored over recent years due to its promising properties. However, on account of nanotubes′ tangled structure impeding the lithium adsorption in the interior nanotube walls, unalterable dimensions of the synthesized nanotubes, and a long period of annealing, the anodizing technique was proposed. It is shown that lithium uptake and adsorption capacity is improved because of easier mass transfer during the ion exchange process. This work focuses on a novel anodizing method for nanotube ion-sieve synthesis. The optimum anodizing condition was discovered by altering anodizing voltage, time, and...

    Abstract
Wax deposition inside pipelines is a major concern in oil and gas industries, and it must be continuously monitored. In this paper, a mathematical-experimental combined method based on the Compton scattering was proposed to determine the thickness of the wax deposited inside the industrial pipes. For this purpose, first, the relationship between the intensity of the backscattered gamma-rays and the thickness of the wax inside the pipe was mathematically modeled. Then, an experimental setup was prepared for measuring the intensity of the backscattered gamma-rays from the pipes with different wall thicknesses and different wax widths. Finally, the experimentally measured counts were used by...
