Thermal Performance Evaluation of Domed Roofs

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Faghih, Ahmad Reza (Author) ; Bahadori Nezhad, Mehdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Domed roofs were commonly used in buildings with large areas. These roofs played an important role in the Iranian architecture and had a great effect on the buildings cooling loads. Solar energy absorption causes the roof temperature to increase in comparison with its ambient atmosphere. Wind flow removes some of the heat from the roof, and the rest goes thorough the roof and enters the building. The eometrical configuration of these domed roofs causes the wind velocity to increase over them, resulting in an increase in the convection heat transfer coefficient. Also, the heat transfer of the roof is accentuated by the fact that the area of a domed configuration is considerably greater than a...

Quantification of Seismic Performance Factors of Y-Bracing

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Faghih, Ashkan (Author) ; Mofid, Massoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
A particular kind of concentric bracing system composed of three members arranged in y-shaped geometry is examined in this thesis. The non-straight diagonal strut of this off-centre bracing causes eccentricity to the system and is connected to the frame corner through a third member. Providing adequate openings in braced bays accompanied by improved energy dissipation are resulted in positive attitude toward using y-bracing frame as a lateral load resisting system. However, lacking of specific design codes could be problematic for engineers. To overcome this incompetency, seismic performance factors including the response modification coefficient, the system overstrength factor, and...

    , Article 2007 IEEE International Conference on Telecommunications and Malaysia International Conference on Communications, ICT-MICC 2007, Penang, 14 May 2007 through 17 May 2007 ; February , 2007 , Pages 17-22 ; 1424410940 (ISBN); 9781424410941 (ISBN) Faghih Imani, S ; Ashtiani, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    2007
    Abstract
In this paper, we propose a new approach in computing interference distribution and outage probability for uplink CDMA cellular networks. In this approach, we model time-varying interference as a discrete-time Markov chain with flexible approximation and find its steady state distribution. Our approach is based on tracing the time variation of the effective factors in interference such as spatial locations, activity status, and shadowing status for the connected users. To this end, we approximate shadowing with several discrete levels by Lloyd algorithm. Moreover, we incorporate correlation properties of the shadowing status in our model. Then, we map the effective factors onto the...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ehyaei, Ahmad Reza (Author) ; Razvan, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Scattering theory on locally symmetric space first was studied by Peter Lax and Ralph Phillips. They studied the and develop scattering theory on it. Without the Fourier analysis tools this theory was completed with a lot of computations. In this thesis first we try to construct Fourier analysis by definition Fourier transform then by means of new tools we prove very short version of scattering theory on locally symmetric space . In general case for studying scattering theory we need firs spectral decomposition of Hilbert space of square integrable functions locally symmetric spaces of rational rank one is achieved by quotient of symmetric space where G is Lie group and K is maximal...

Analysis and Improvement of QoS in Optical CDMA Networks Using Cross Layer Design Concepts

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hosseini, Ahmad Reza (Author) ; Pakravan, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
According to the rapid growing in communication devices, users need higher rates for their usages. Fiber optics is one the major choices to support such rates. One of the simplest and cheapest networks is Local Area Network (LAN) as a Passive Optical Network (PON). In these networks, some computers are locally connected to a passive optical device and communicate through it. Multiple access to a shared channel is an important task in such a network. In this thesis, Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) is used and a new algorithm for Multiple Access Control Sublayer (MAC) based on scheduling will be developed to improve Quality of Service (QoS) and stabilize the network.
    In the scheduling...

    Abstract
Reviewing trends of energy consumption in the world reveals that sooner or later energy resources will be depleted. This concerning rate of consumption has brought about more greenhouse gases (GHG) emission influencing deleteriously on environment and climate. Human has continued energy consumption to maintain and improve the quality of his life through industrial production. Industry as a significant energy user owns considerable contribution to this consumption. Several attempts have been carried out to develop energy management systems in order to improve the energy efficiency of industrial sectors. Whilst they are comprehensive and could be applied to any sector, there is lack of...

    Abstract
The Tilor welded blank (TWB) two or more sheets with different thickness or strength which are welded together. The automobile designer are searching for new methods to reduce the cars’ weight and producing cost in order to diminish fuel consumption so they can survive in the competitive market. One way to achieve to this seemingly Contradictory demands, is using TWB in cars’ body. One of the most applicable methods to investigate the formability of metals sheets, is Forming Limit Diagrams (FLD). Three ways to determine the FLD are: Analytical Method, Experimental Methods, and Numerical Method. The experimental method to determine FLD, require metal sheets to undergo in different strain...

Comparing the Performance of Centrifuge, Membrane Filter and Filter Press for Clarification of Lipase Enzyme

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Taher Aslani, Ahmad Reza (Author) ; Rousta Azad, Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Lipases (Triacyl Glycerol Acyl Hydrolase, EC.3.1.1.3) are multidimensional biocatalysts which have many applications in food industrials, dairy, fats and oils processing, detergents, synthesis of pure chemical and pharmaceutical materials, paper industrial and cosmetics. Generally, industrial enzymes are produced extracellularly, so their separation from a low-cost complex medium (usually used for production) is one of the cost stages in their production process. Filtration is the most economical method of separation in the production of enzymes, but due to the small size of colloidal particles and cell masses present in the fermentation environment, its use is subject to limitations. In...

A Hybrid Meta-Heuristic Algorithm to Solve Three Dimensional Highway Alignment Optimization Problem

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Faghih, Sabiheh Alsadat (Author) ; Poorzahedi, Hossain (Supervisor)
    Abstract
There are several algorithms in the literature to solve the problem of finding an optimal path between two points in a region. Such path satisfies certain constraints while optimizing the objective function. There are many factors in building, or finding, such paths in the real world, whose considerations complicate the solution procedure. This led the researchers to seriously consider meta-heuristics to solve the problem. This study hybridizes several suitable and effective meta-heuristic algorithms to solve the routing problem on a given topography. In this hybrid meta-heuristic algorithm an Ant System finds a horizontal path between the two points under considerations on the topography. A...

A Framework to Forecast Highway Construction Materials Prices

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Faghih, Amir Mohsen (Author) ; Kashani, Hamed (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Due¬ to the volatile nature of material prices, projecting highway construction costs are proven to be very difficult, leading to many challenges in cost estimation process. Bid preparations as well as project planning and control processes are also negatively affected by the concerns about the inaccuracy of cost projections. There is a growing body of evidence that suggests the use of inaccurate cost estimate can result in bid loss or profit loss for contractors and hidden price contingencies, delayed or cancelled projects, inconsistency in budgets and unsteady flow of projects for owner organizations. Analysis of historical data indicates that a relationship between construction materials...

    Abstract
An access control model for Semantic Web should take the semantic relationships among the entities, defined in the abstract conceptual level (i.e., ontology level), into account. Authorization and policy specification based on a logical model let us infer implicit security policies from the explicit ones based on the defined semantic relationships in the domains of subjects, objects, and actions. In this paper, we propose a logic based access control model for specification and inference of history-constrained access policies in conceptual level of Semantic Web. The proposed model (named TDLBAC-2) enables authorities to state policy rules based on the history of users' accesses using a...

    Abstract
Domed roofs have been used in Iran and many other countries to cover large buildings such as mosques, shrines, churches, schools, etc. However their favorable thermal performance has allowed them to be employed in other buildings like bazaars, or market places in Iran. In this investigation, wind pressure coefficients were determined experimentally for a domed roof model in a boundary layer wind tunnel. The model was a 1/10 scale model of the dome of an old school in the city of Yazd, in the central desert region of Iran. The model included a number of windows at the collar of the dome, and a hole on its apex. A total of 48 pressure tabs were employed to measure the air pressure at various...

    Solar radiation on domed roofs

    , Article Energy and Buildings ; Volume 41, Issue 11 , 2009 , Pages 1238-1245 ; 03787788 (ISSN) Faghih Khorasani, A. R ; Bahadori, M.N ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
Solar radiation received and absorbed by four domed roofs was estimated and compared with that of a flat roof. The domed roofs all had the same base areas, and equal to that of the flat roof. One of the roofs considered was the dome of the St. Peter's Church in Rome. Compared with the other roofs considered, this dome had a higher aspect ratio. It was found that all domed roofs received more solar radiation than the flat roof. Considering glazed tiles to cover a selected dome in Iran and the dome of the St. Peter's Church, it was found that the solar radiation absorbed by these roofs is reduced appreciably. In the case of the dome of St. Peter's Church, the amount of radiation absorbed was...

A temporal description logic based access control model for expressing history constrained policies in semantic web

    , Article Proceedings - 2009 IEEE International Symposium on Policies for Distributed Systems and Networks, POLICY 2009, 20 July 2009 through 22 July 2009, London ; 2009 , Pages 142-149 ; 9780769537429 (ISBN) Faghih, F ; Amini, M ; Jalili, R ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
An access control model for Semantic Web should be compatible with the corresponding semantic model. The access control procedure(s) should also take the semantic relationships between the entities (specified as ontologies) into account. Considering the benefits of logic-based models and the description logic foundation of Semantic Web, in this paper, we propose an access control model based on a temporal variant of description logics (TL-ALCF). This logical schema enables us to express history constrained policies to enrich the policy-base with dynamic properties based on previous accesses. The specification of each component of the model as well as the approach to define history...

Phase Transition in Convex Optimization Problems with Random Data

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Faghih Mirzaei, Delbar (Author) ; Alishahi, Kasra (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In the behavior of many convex optimization problems with random constraints in high dimensions, sudden changes or phase transitions have been observed in terms of the number of constraints. A well-known example of this is the problem of reconstructing a thin vector or a low-order matrix based on a number of random linear observations. In both cases, methods based on convex optimization have been developed, observed, and proved that when the number of observations from a certain threshold becomes more (less), the answer to the problem with a probability of close to one (zero) is correct and the original matrix is reconstructed. Recently, results have been obtained that explain why this...

Fluid Suspended Films in Present of Electric Field and Voltage

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Shirsavar, Reza (Author) ; Amjadi, Ahmad (Supervisor) ; Ejtehadi, Mohammad Reza ($item.subfieldsMap.e)
    Abstract
Scientists want to know how they can control fluids motion. They use electric fields for controlling the fluids in different dimensions. In small size, application of electric fields is very important because of biological applications. We use electric current and field for rotating freely suspended films. Here, we study soap, polar and non-polar liquids, MBBA liquid crystal and ferrofluids films. We show that the surface charge plays the crucial role in rotating the films. We study the correlation between rotation of a film and different physical quantities. Our experiments confirm that dipole moments of fluid molecules do not show a clear effect on the rotation. Increasing the dipole moment...

Stabilization of the Finite element Analysis of the Fluid-Structure Interaction in Micro Systems in Small Time Steps

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Afrasiab, Hamed (Author) ; Movahhedy, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor) ; Assempour, Ahmad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Fluid-structure interaction plays an important role in the performance of various Microsystems. In many micro-devices such as micropumps, microvalves and micromixers, the fluid flow is driven by a vibrating solid membrane. Since the fluid also plays a role in resistance to the solid vibration and deformation, the solid vibration and the fluid flow are always coupled and a full fluid-structure interaction (FSI) analysis is required in order to investigate the performance characteristics of these devices. Since the frequency of the solid vibration is normally high in micro-devices, the time step size required for the finite element analysis of the fluid-structure interaction in these devices...
