    Abstract
Closed cell aluminum foams are fabricated by using the casting method. The electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding effectiveness of foams are investigated in the frequency range of 1.44–5 and 8–12 GHz (X band). The shielding materials are made of Al foam with the addition of different concentrations of SiC (5, 10, 15 wt%). Results show that the Al/SiC composite foams have good shielding effectiveness. EMI shielding effectiveness of samples generally increased with increasing porosity and with the increasing of SiC content. The sample with 15 wt% SiC had shielding effectiveness values of up to 150 dB

Effective point kinetic parameters calculation in Tehran research reactor using deterministic and probabilistic methods

    , Article Nuclear Science and Techniques ; Volume 28, Issue 12 , 2017 ; 10018042 (ISSN) Kheradmand Saadi, M ; Abbaspour, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2017
    Abstract
The exact calculation of point kinetic parameters is very important in nuclear reactor safety assessment, and most sophisticated safety codes such as RELAP5, PARCS, DYN3D, and PARET are using these parameters in their dynamic models. These parameters include effective delayed neutron fractions as well as mean generation time. These parameters are adjoint-weighted, and adjoint flux is employed as a weighting function in their evaluation. Adjoint flux calculation is an easy task for most of deterministic codes, but its evaluation is cumbersome for Monte Carlo codes. However, in recent years, some sophisticated techniques have been proposed for Monte Carlo-based point kinetic parameters...

Startup of "cANDLE" burnup in a Gas-cooled Fast Reactor using Monte Carlo method

    , Article Annals of Nuclear Energy ; Volume 50 , December , 2012 , Pages 44-49 ; 03064549 (ISSN) Kheradmand Saadi, M ; Abbaspour, A ; Pazirandeh, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
During the past decade, the CANDLE burnup strategy has been proposed as an innovative fuel cycle and reactor design for complete utilization of uranium resources. In this strategy the shapes of neutron flux, nuclide densities and power density distribution remain constant but the burning region moves in axial direction. The feasibility of this strategy has been demonstrated widely by using the diffusion technique in conjunction with nuclide transmutation equations. On the other hand since the Monte Carlo method provides the exact solution to the neutron transport, the Monte Carlo technique is becoming more widely used in routine burnup calculations. The main objective of this work is startup...

Validation of a new MCNP-ORIGEN linkage program for burnup analysis

    , Article Progress in Nuclear Energy ; Volume 63 , 2013 , Pages 27-33 ; 01491970 (ISSN) Kheradmand Saadi, M ; Abbaspour, A ; Pazirandeh, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The analysis of core composition changes is complicated by the fact that the time and spatial variation in isotopic composition depend on the neutron flux distribution and vice versa. Fortunately, changes in core composition occur relatively slowly and hence the burnup analysis can be performed by dividing the burnup period into some burnup spans and assuming that the averaged flux and cross sections are constant during each step. The burnup span sensitivity analysis attempts to find that how much the burnup spans could be increased without any significant deviation in results. This goal has been achieved by developing a new MCNP-ORIGEN linkage program named as MOBC (MCNP-ORIGEN Burnup...

    Abstract
The graphene-based Ziegler-Natta catalyst has been used to prepare ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene/graphene oxide (UHMWPE/GO) nanocomposite via in situ polymerization. The morphological investigations have been conducted using X-ray diffraction patterns and scanning electron microscopy method. The obtained results indicated that no diffraction peak is detected in a GO pattern, which could be due to the exfoliation of graphene nanosheets in the UHMWPE matrix. Morphological investigations indicated that GO nanosheets are dispersed almost uniformly in polymeric matrix, and that there should exist a good interaction between nanofillers and matrix. The mechanical properties of the...

    Abstract
In this study, reinforcement of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) was investigated using the sol-gel surface modified diamond nanoparticles (NDs). Nanocomposite samples were synthesized via in-situ polymerization using bi-supported Ziegler-Natta catalyst. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and contact angle measurements proved the proper silanization (∼1.9%) of NDs. Characterization of the catalysts revealed decrease in the activity of catalysts in presence of NDs which were responsible for the lower average molecular weight of the samples. Field emission scanning electron microscopy revealed an improved dispersion of the modified NDs in...

    Abstract
Calibrating the inverse kinematics of complex robots is often a challenging task. Finding analytical solutions is not always possible and the convergence of numerical methods is not guaranteed. The model-free approaches, based on machine learning and artificial intelligence, are fast and easy to work, however, they need a huge amount of experimental training data to provide acceptable results. In this article, we proposed a hybrid method to benefit the advantage of both model-based and model-free approaches. The forward kinematics of the robot is calibrated using a model-based approach, and its inverse kinematics using a neural network. Hence, while there is no need to solve the nonlinear...

The fuzzy logic rules are extracted based on Sugeno inference engine. The inverse mapping model is based on an artificial neural network...

Performance and exhaust emission characteristics of a spark ignition engine operated with gasoline and CNG blend

    , Article Proceedings of the Spring Technical Conference of the ASME Internal Combustion Engine Division ; 2012 , Pages 179-187 ; 15296598 (ISSN) ; 9780791844663 (ISBN) Dashti, M ; Hamidi, A. A ; Mozafari, A. A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Using CNG as an additive for gasoline is a proper choice due to higher octane number of CNG enriched gasoline with respect to that of gasoline. As a result, it is possible to use gasoline with lower octane number in the engine. This would also mean the increase of compression ratio in SI engines resulting in higher performance and lower gasoline consumption. Over the years, the use of simulation codes to model the thermodynamic cycle of an internal combustion engine have developed tools for more efficient engine designs and fuel combustion. In this study, a thermodynamic cycle simulation of a conventional four-stroke spark-ignition engine has been developed. The model is used to study the...

    Abstract
With the declining energy resources and increase of pollutant emissions, a great deal of efforts has been focused on the development of alternatives for fossil fuels. One of the promising alternative fuels to gasoline in the internal combustion engine is natural gas [1-5]. The application of natural gas in current internal combustion engines is realistic due to its many benefits. The higher thermal efficiency due to the higher octane value and lower exhaust emissions including CO2 as a result of the lower carbon to hydrogen ratio of the fuel are the two important feature of using CNG as an alternative fuel. It is well known that computer simulation codes are valuable economically as a cost...

    Abstract
Gaining insight into possible vibratory responses of dynamical systems around their stable equilibria is an essential step, which must be taken before their design and application. The results of such a study can significantly help prevent instability in closed-loop stabilized systems by avoiding the excitation of the system in the neighborhood of its resonance. This paper investigates nonlinear oscillations of a rotary inverted pendulum (RIP) with a full-state feedback controller. Lagrange’s equations are employed to derive an accurate 2-DoF mathematical model, whose parameter values are extracted by both the measurement and 3D modeling of the real system components. Although the governing...

    Abstract
We introduce a new smooth, non-toxic, biocompatible method for cross-linking of gum tragacanth (GT), a polysaccharide of natural origin, in order to serve as a new supporting matrix for immobilization systems. The modified gum is used as a matrix for the catalysis of the conversion of benzyl penicillin to 6-aminopenicillanic acid (6-APA) by means of Escherichia coli ATCC11105 with penicillin G acylase (PGA) activity. The results show that GT beads can not only serve as a proper matrix for immobilization, but show enhanced hydrolysis rate and stability compared to other immobilization systems used for this reaction. This signifies the potential of GT as a biocompatible matrix for...

    Abstract
The Class-E power amplifier has been widely studied and formulated in the literature. Although the majority of reported inductive coupling wireless power transfer (WPT) systems use a class-E power amplifier for driving the primary coil, still there is a lack of a comprehensive study on class-E circuit dedicated to WPT, providing a set of closed form design equations for proper class-E operation. This paper presents the required design equations needed to design a 'true' class-E circuit for WPT applications. Equations for the series-tuned secondary coil WPT system are presented, as well as two different design procedures for the parallel-tuned secondary coil. The derived equations have been...
