Development of an Integrated Model of Electricity & Methanol Co Production Through Solar Energy and CO2 Capture

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mahmoodi Azar, Karwan (Author) ; Saboohi, Yadollah (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Emission of CO2 and its diffusion into atmosphere is associated with negative effects on the environmental such as Green House Gases effect. Various techniques of CO2 Capture in energy conversion and processing plant are investigated. A method of CO2 Capture could be based on utilization of solar energy for producing methanol. Basic design of such a system and feasibility analysis of developing that system has been considered on the subject of the present research work. Basic design and commercial feasibility of the system producing methanol through capturing CO2 from exhaust gases of a power plant and hydrogen produced by using solar energy have done such an integrated system. The main...

The Effect of Solvent Type on the Characteristic of TiO2 Nanometric Coatings Produced by Electrophoretic Method

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Farrokhi Rad, Morteza (Author) ; Ghorbani, Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Titania is semiconductor material and have many applications including photocatalysis, photochromic, air and water purification, sensors, and solar cell. In electrophoretic deposition, charged particles dispersed in a stable suspension move towards an oppositely charged electrode, and form dense layer of deposit on it. In this investigation electrophoretic deposition of titania nano-particles in suspensions prepared by different solvents (methanol, ethanol and butanol) with and without dispersant (triethanolamine and polyethylenimine), was studied. Well stabilized suspensions, prepared for electrophoretic deposition. The effects of solvent type, additive concentration, mechanism of particles...

Application of Enzymatic Method for Production of Biofuel from Domestic Oily Seed Resources

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Fayyaz, Mohammad Reza (Author) ; Kariminia, Hamid Reza (Supervisor) ; Shayegan, Jalaleddin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The enzymatic transesterification of castor oil with methanol in a solvent free media is carried out using lipase catalyst. The influence of several operation conditions on the production of biodiesel was analyzed i.e. the amount of enzyme, molar ratio of methanol to castor oil, reaction temperature and reaction time. It is observed that with increase in molar ratio, reaction time and enzyme amount, the amount of product (biodiesel) increased. When reaction temperature increased, the amount of biodiesel increased firstly and then decreased. The optimum conditions for the reaction were as follows: enzyme amount 300 mg, molar ratio of methanol to oil 9:1 and temperature 55°C. The maximum...

Synthesis and Evaluation of a Nano-Catalyst for Dehydration of Methanol to Dimethyl Ether

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Zaherian, Amir Ali (Author) ; Kazemeini, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Aghaziarati, Mahmoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Dimethyl ether (DME) as a clean fuel is a suitable alternative for diesel fuel. It has a high cetane number and does not contain any sulfur or metal compounds. Furthermore, DME does not form any soot and has a potential to reduce NOx emissions. In addition, it is not corrosive to any metal and not harmful to the human body. Two approaches are currently used for the production of DME from synthesis gas. The first is an indirect two-step process involving methanol synthesis followed by catalytic dehydration of methanol to DME over solid-acid catalysts, while the second method enables direct synthesis of DME using a bifunctional catalyst. At present, indirect synthesis of DME is a more...

Kinetics Study and Determining an Optimum Reactor Condition for Dimethyl-ether Synthesis by Dehydration of Methanol over Nano-Crystalline γ-Al2O3

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Alamolhoda, Sarah (Author) ; Kazemeini , Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Khorashe, Farhad (Supervisor) ; Khandan, Nahid (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Dimethyl Ether (DME) is a pure and economic fuel which can be used as a suitable alternative for diesel fuels. Two processes are traditionally used for DME synthesis: producing methanol from synthesis gas and then dehydrating it to DME (direct process), and converting methanol into DME in a catalytic dehydration reactor over a solid-acid catalyst (indirect process), in which the indirect process seems to have economical advantage. In this research, the γ-Al2O3 catalyst was synthesized through precipitation process and then characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) and porosimetry analysis. Afterwards this catalyst was utilized in methanol dehydration reaction in a slurry reactor. Next,...

Green Design For Methanol Plant Process Integration

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Taghdisian, Hosein (Author) ; Farhadi, Fathollah (Supervisor) ; Pishvaie, Mahmoud Reza (Supervisor) ; Bozorgmehri, Ramin (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
The main objective of the present work is to achieve green design of a methanol plant by using life cycle process design (LCPD) and multi-objective optimization. As a starting point, simulation of Lurgi’s combined reforming process as a conventional reference methanol case (RMC) was performed in order to obtain its operational and kinetic parameters as well as its environmental impacts. The environmental concerns were calculated using one of the modern environmental impact assessment methods, i.e. life cycle assessment (LCA). To perform life cycle assessment of RMC, methanol production plant as well as its auxiliary units should be considered. The auxiliary units in the RMC include cryogenic...

Economic Analysis of Producing Methanol from Kish Gas Field

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mardani Boldaji, Somaye (Author) ; Mostafavi, Mostafa (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Iran with the second largest gas reserves in the world makes the importance of Kish Island more vital. Kish gas field, with a capacity of 67 trillion cubic meters gas, is one of the main hubs of Iran gas production. One of the uses of natural gas is to produce petrochemical goods such as Methanol. In this thesis the focus is on economical evaluation of producing Methanol for amount of 5,000 tons per day from Kish gas field. As a result, the required feed has been estimated about 150 million cubic feet per day and the net capital investment calculated to be 941 million US dollars. The initial estimate of Direct Permanent Investment (DPI) was calculated to be $590.8 million. Having considered...

Experimental Investigation of Using Phase Change Material Effect on Heat Transfer in Pool Boiling Process

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Behzadi, Mohammad Matin (Author) ; Shafii, Mohammad Behshad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
One of the different methods of heat transfer, is pool boiling process. In this method, the operating fluid starts to boil on a hot surface whose temperature is more than boiling point of the fluid. Based on difference between between surface temperature and fluid boiling point, amount of heat flux from hot surface to fluid and fluid behavior will be different. In recent years, many researchers have tried to improve the amount of heat transfer in the boiling process by using various methods such as nanoparticle addition or using magnetic field.Latent heat is thermal energy released or absorbed, by a body or a thermodynamic system, during a constant-temperature process, usually a first-order...
