Investigation of the Membrane Characteristics on the Performance of Microbial Fuel Cell

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Nikousefat , Omid (Author) ; Torkian, Ayoub (Supervisor) ; Gobal, Freydoon (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The process of human populations growth, limited resources of fossil fuels and its environmental consequences have driven the international community to Renewable Energy. Microbial fuel cell (MFC) has ability of simultaneous wastewater treatment and electricity generation (Energy). This technology can be considered as one of the proposed solutions to reduce costs of wastewater treatment and power generation. Separators are one of the major components of the MFC that have direct impact on cell performance. On the other hand, high costs of the conventional types have caused to limiting development of the MFC in the last decade.

Preparation and Characterization of Polymeric Nanocomposite Membrane used in Li-Ion Batteries

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mohammadzad, Mohammad Khalil (Author) ; Pircheraghi, Gholamreza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In Lithium ion batteries, the separator is membrane that placed between the cathode and the anode is one of critical components. Its primary function is to effectively transport ionic charge carriers between two electrodes as an efficient ionic conductor as well as to prevent the electric contact between them as a good electric insulator. The separator does not involve directly in any cell reactions, but its structure and properties play an important role in determining the battery performance. Commercially available polyolefin separators low cost, good electric resistance, high electrochemical stability, and effectively prevent thermal runaway caused by the electrical short-circuits or...

Design, Simulation and Fabrication of a Centrifugal Microfluidic Device for Circulating Tumor Cells Separation

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Naghdloo, Amin (Author) ; Shamloo, Amir (Supervisor) ; Nouri Borujerdi, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this project, two centrifugal microfluidic platforms with the goal of separation and genetical study of circulating tumor cells have been designed, simulated and fabricated. Circulating tumor cells are the ones that are detached from the cancer tumors, entered the blood and disseminated the danger of cancer through other parts of the body. Both passive and active methods of separation are investigated in this study. The passive method is based on the inertial effects of the fluid and the active method is based on the magnetophoretic force exerted from an external magnetic field. In order to use the active method, the magnetic nanoparticles are attached to the breast cancer cells by the...

Urban Traffic Analysis Using Limited Queries from a Predicting Source

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Akbari Bibihayat, Saeed (Author) ; Abam, Mohammad Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In local transportation service companies, there is a need for estimation of arrival times (ETA) for customers. These companies not having the sufficient number of active online users, they are not able to obtain a proper estimation for ETA from that data. However, there are some overseas companies that have the established user base, and provide access to necessary data with a service fee. It is possible to solve this problem using the data which they provide. In this thesis, the problem of learning a hidden graph for the purpose of aiding local companies is explained and different aspects of it are introduced. In order to tackle this problem, first we define the idea of vertex separators,...
