Development of a new method for forecasting future states of NPPs parameters in transients
, Article IEEE Transactions on Nuclear Science ; Vol. 61, issue. 5 , 2014 , Pages 2636-2642 ; ISSN: 00189499 ; Ghofrani, M. B ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
This study introduces a new method for forecasting future states of nuclear power plants (NPPs) parameters in abnormal conditions (i.e. transients). The proposed method consists of two steps. First, the type of transients is recognized by the modular EBP based identifier. A hybrid network is then used to forecast the selected parameters of the identified transient. ARIMA model is used to estimate the linear component of the selected parameters. The neural network developed by EBP learning algorithm is then used to estimate the nonlinear component of the selected parameters. Finally, prediction of parameters is obtained by adding the estimated linear and nonlinear components. To analyze the...
Low-data complexity biclique cryptanalysis of block ciphers with application to piccolo and HIGHT
, Article IEEE Transactions on Information Forensics and Security ; Vol. 9, Issue. 10 , 2005 , Pages 1641-1652 ; Ahmadian, Z ; Mohajeri, J ; Aref, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
In this paper, we present a framework for biclique cryptanalysis of block ciphers which extremely requires a low amount of data. To that end, we enjoy a new representation of biclique attack based on a new concept of cutset that describes our attack more clearly. Then, an algorithm for choosing two differential characteristics is presented to simultaneously minimize the data complexity and control the computational complexity. Then, we characterize those block ciphers that are vulnerable to this technique and among them, we apply this attack on lightweight block ciphers Piccolo-80, Piccolo-128, and HIGHT. The data complexity of these attacks is only 16-plaintext-ciphertext pairs, which is...

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to experimentally investigate the interaction between a low replacement ratio of different nano-particles (SiO2, Al2O3, clay, and CaCO3) and aminosilane in the matrices of cement paste and mortar. Results showed that the optimum content of aminosilane for improving the 28-day compressive strength of cement mortar was 0.75% (by weight of the total binder). The utilization of nano-SiO2 and nano-clay particles improved the strengths of the cement mortar containing hybrid systems of nano-particles/aminosilane at early (7 days) and middle curing ages (28 and 91 days). The 28-day compressive strength enhancement of cement mortar with hybrid systems of nano-SiO...
Connectedness of users-items networks and recommender systems
, Article Applied Mathematics and Computation ; Vol. 243 , 2014 , Pages 578-584 ; ISSN: 00963003 ; Jalili, M ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
Recommender systems have become an important issue in network science. Collaborative filtering and its variants are the most widely used approaches for building recommender systems, which have received great attention in both academia and industry. In this paper, we studied the relationship between recommender systems and connectivity of users-items bipartite network. This results in a novel recommendation algorithm. In our method recommended items are selected based on the eigenvector corresponding to the algebraic connectivity of the graph - the second smallest eigenvalue of the Laplacian matrix. Since recommending an item to a user equals to adding a new link to the users-items bipartite...

Abstract
A series of biodegradable acrylic terminated polyurethanes (APUs) based on poly(ε-caprolactone) diol (PCL), aliphatic 1,6-hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) and hydroxyethyl methyl acrylate (HEMA) was synthesized as potential materials for hard tissue biomedical applications. PCLs with low molecular weights of 1000 and 2000 g/mol were employed to provide different amounts of end capped urethane acrylate in APUs. To control crosslink density, a mixture of two different reactive diluents including mono-functional HEMA and bi-functional ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) with different weight ratios was incorporated into the APUs, called here PUAs. Morphological characteristics and mechanical...

Abstract
Gold nanotubes/nanowires (GNT/NW) were synthesized by using the template-assisted electrodeposition technique and mixed with castor oil-polyethylene glycol based polyurethane (PU) to fabricate porous composite scaffolds for biomedical application. 100 and 50 ppm of GNT/NW were used to synthesize composites. The composite scaffolds were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, dynamic mechanical thermal analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, and scanning electron microscopy. Cell attachment on polyurethane-GNT/NW composites was investigated using fat-derived mesenchymal stem cells. Addition of 50 or 100 ppm GNT/NW had significant effects on thermal, mechanical, and cell...
Low voltage ride-through capability improvement of DFIG-based wind turbines under unbalanced voltage dips
, Article International Journal of Electrical Power and Energy Systems ; Vol. 60,Issue , 2014 , pp. 82-95 ; ISSN: 01420615 ; Parniani, M ; Sharif University of Technology
2014
Abstract
This paper proposes a competent and effective scheme to enhance the ride-through capability of DFIG-based wind turbines under unbalanced voltage dip conditions. The proposed method is realized through joint use of the rotor-side converter control and a three-phase stator damping resistor (SDR) placed in series with the stator windings. By means of an asymmetrical SDR idea, during the unbalanced voltage dip the SDR resistors are activated only in phase(s) experiencing low voltage. Then, the rotor current is controlled such that no unbalance voltage appears on the stator voltage. The proposed ride-through approach limits the peak values of the rotor inrush current, electromagnetic torque and...

Abstract
In the future smart grids, Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) are seen as an important means of transportation to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. One of the main issues regarding to this sort of vehicles is managing their charging time to prevent high peak loads over time. Deploying advanced metering and automatic chargers can be a practical way not only for the vehicle owners to manage their energy consumption, but also for the utilities to manage the electricity load during the day by shifting the charging loads to the off-peak periods. Additionally, an efficient charging schedule can reduce the users' electricity bill cost. In this paper we propose a new practical demand response...

Abstract
Bioinspired materials can mimic the stem cell environment and modulate stem cell differentiation and proliferation. In this study, biomimetic micro/nanoenvironments were fabricated by cell-imprinted substrates based on mature human keratinocyte morphological templates. The data obtained from atomic force microscopy and field emission scanning electron microscopy revealed that the keratinocyte-cell-imprinted poly(dimethylsiloxane) casting procedure could imitate the surface morphology of the plasma membrane, ranging from the nanoscale to the macroscale, which may provide the required topographical cell fingerprints to induce differentiation. Gene expression levels of the genes analyzed...

Abstract
Injecting low salinity brines is regarded as an enhanced oil recovery (EOR) process through IFT reduction. However, the exact mechanism behind this process is an unsettled and complex issue that has not been well understood yet, especially for heavy crude oil system. Besides, limited information is available regarding the key heavy oil/brine interfacial tension (IFT). The present study aims to investigate the sensitivity of dead heavy crude oil/brine IFT to a wide range of properties/conditions and to reveal the underlying physicochemical mechanisms involved in enhanced oil recovery and IFT reduction by low salinity water injection into heavy oil reservoir. IFT was measured as a function of...

, Article Chemical Engineering Journal ; Vol. 250 , 2014 , Pages 35-41 ; ISSN: 13858947 ; Hashemi, M. M ; Sharif University of Technology
2014
Abstract
A task-specific Brønsted acidic ionic liquid (BAIL), 1-benzyl-3-methylimidazolium hydrogensulfate ([BnMIm]HSO4), was prepared and confined onto the high surface area silica gel. The catalyst has shown extraordinary activity in comparison of homogeneous ionic liquid (IL) system for Fischer esterification of fatty acid with ethanol. The ester derivatives were synthesized in high yields and catalyst was easily separated from the reaction mixture by simple filtration. The structure of the catalyst is theoretically modelized to investigate the unusual catalytic activity. Hence, a hydroxylated cage-like nano-cluster, H6Si8O12(OH)2, was selected to mimic the surface of silica gel. The interactions...
Population balance modeling of barium sulfate nanoparticle synthesis via inverse microemulsion including coagulation effect
, Article Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Research ; Vol. 53, issue. 32 , 2014 , Pages 12705-12719 ; ISSN: 08885885 ; Shahrokhi, M ; Molaei Dehkordi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
2014
Abstract
A deterministic model based on the discrete population balance equation (PBE) is used to examine the precipitation of barium sulfate nanoparticles in nonionic inverse microemulsion systems. It is shown that coagulation can have a significant effect at low initial reactants concentration. The simulation results show that a bimodal particle size distribution (PSD) observed in experimental analysis reported in the literature cannot be predicted by neglecting the coagulation effect. A coagulation kernel is proposed that takes into account the effect of interparticle forces through the Fuchs' stability ratio. The effect of electrolyte concentration on the surfactant headgroup area is also...
Numerical modeling of surface reaction kinetics in electrokinetically actuated microfluidic devices
, Article Analytica Chimica Acta ; Vol. 838, issue , August , 2014 , pp. 64-75 ; ISSN: 00032670 ; Amini, Y ; Saidi, M. H ; Chakraborty, S ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
We outline a comprehensive numerical procedure for modeling of species transport and surface reaction kinetics in electrokinetically actuated microfluidic devices of rectangular cross section. Our results confirm the findings of previous simplified approaches that a concentration wave is created for sufficiently long microreactors. An analytical solution, developed for the wave propagation speed, shows that, when normalizing with the fluid mean velocity, it becomes a function of three parameters comprising the channel aspect ratio, the relative adsorption capacity, and the kinetic equilibrium constant. Our studies also reveal that the reactor geometry idealized as a slit, instead of a...

Abstract
Among various chemical methods, alkaline flooding has a great potential for enhancing heavy oil recovery, especially for reservoirs which contain acidic crude oil. However, fundamental understanding about microscopic displacement mechanisms and macroscopic behavior during alkaline floods at different wettabilities is not well understood, especially in five-spot shaly models. In this work several alkaline floods are performed on a glass micromodel containing randomly distributed shale streaks at different wettability conditions. Various mechanisms responsible for enhancing heavy oil recovery during alkaline flooding are investigated at different wettability conditions. These mechanisms...

Extending a hybrid finite-volume-element method to solve laminar diffusive flame
, Article Numerical Heat Transfer, Part B: Fundamentals ; Vol. 66, issue. 2 , August , 2014 , pp. 181-210 ; ISSN: 10407790 ; Ghafourizadeh, M ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
We extend a hybrid finite-volume-element (FVE) method to treat the laminar reacting flow in cylindrical coordinates considering the collocation of all chosen primitive variables. To approximate the advection fluxes at the cell faces, we use the upwind-biased physical influence scheme PIS and derive a few new extended expressions applicable in the cylindrical frame. These expressions are derived for both the Navier-Stokes and reactive flow governing equations, of which the latter expressions are considered novel in the finite-volume formulation. To validate our derived expressions, the current results are compared with the experimental data and other available numerical solutions. The results...

Abstract
Early diagnosis of any disease at a lower cost is preferable. Automatic medical diagnosis classification tools reduce financial burden on health care systems. In medical diagnosis, patterns consist of observable symptoms and the results of diagnostic tests, which have various associated costs and risks. In this paper, we have experimented and suggested an automated pattern classification method for classifying four diseases into two classes. In the literature on machine learning or data mining, regression and classification problems are typically viewed as two distinct problems differentiated by continuous or categorical dependent variables. There are endeavors to use regression methods to...

Abstract
Precipitation of strontium sulfate (or SrSO4) has already been distinguished as one of the most costly and critical problems which may occur in process industries and oilfield operations. Costs due to scaling and remedial actions that need to be taken afterward are generally high owing to low solubility of SrSO4 in aqueous solutions. Therefore, a thorough understanding of the SrSO4 thermodynamic behavior under various operating conditions is vital to predict or even avoid the overall damage caused by scaling. The primary aim of this work is to develop a model based on Least Squares Support Vector Machine (LSSVM) and Coupled Simulated Annealing (CSA) referred to as CSA-LSSVM to predict...
