Investigation the Machinability of Al/SiC Composite

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Rahiminasab, Jafar (Author) ; Kouchakzade, Mohammad Ali (Supervisor) ; Yoosafi, Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Metal matrix composites (MMCs) have received considerable attention due to their excellent engineering properties, but their poor machinability has been the main deterrent to their substitution for metal parts. The hardness and abrasive nature of reinforcement phase causes rapid tool wear during machining and, consequently, high machining costs. This paper discusses an experimental investigation on the machinability of Al-SiC particulate metal matrix composite produced by powder metallurgical process with , and %SiC. Continuous dry turning of round composite bars using titanium carbide inserts has been selected as the test method. The influence of machining parameters, e.g. cutting speed,...

An Investigation on Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of TLP Bonded Al/SiC Composite Using Powder Technique

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Khaksari Noori, Mohammad (Author) ; Ekrami, A.A (Supervisor) ; Bagheri, REZA (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this research Al6061-SiC composite bonding was done by transient liquid phase method using powder copper intermediate layer. In the first stage feasibility of making this junction in ambient condition was studied. In order to find process optimum temperature, experiments were performed in 560°C, 570°C, 580°C and 590°C for 2 hours. Optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and EDS analysis were utilized for this study. Moreover, shear strength determination test was done to assess and compare mechanical properties and also to determine the optimum bonding temperature.
In second stage, base composite and bonded specimens were homogenized in 530°C for 5 and 10 hours. Effect of...

Alteration of corrosion and nanomechanical properties of pulse electrodeposited Ni/SiC nanocomposite coatings

    , Article Journal of Alloys and Compounds ; Vol. 598 , 2014 , Pages 236-242 ; ISSN: 09258388 Zarghami, V ; Ghorbani, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Nickel/silicon carbide composite electrodeposits were prepared on a rotating disk electrode (RDE), under pulse current condition. The effect of pulse parameters, current density, SiC content in the electrolyte on the codeposition of SiC were studied. Afterwards, the effect of codeposited SiC amount was investigated on electrochemical behavior and nanomechanical properties of coatings. The coatings were analyzed with Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), linear polarization, nanoindentation and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). The Ni-SiC electrocomposites, prepared at optimum conditions, exhibited improved nanomechanical properties in comparison to pure nickel electrodeposits. With increasing...

Electrodeposition of Ni/WC nano composite in sulfate solution

    , Article Materials Chemistry and Physics ; Volume 129, Issue 3 , 2011 , Pages 746-750 ; 02540584 (ISSN) Mohajeri, S ; Dolati, A ; Rezagholibeiki, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Metal matrix composite coatings have gained great attention due to their exclusive properties. They have shown the properties of a metallic host material modified by addition of a second phase. In electrodeposition of Ni/WC nano composite, nickel was deposited on the substrates by DC electrodeposition in Watt's based bath containing nickel sulfate, nickel chloride, boric acid and sodium dodecyl sulfate. WC content in the coating was determined by different parameters such as current density, powder content and surfactant amount. Mechanism of electrodeposition was analyzed by cyclic voltammetry and was confirmed by Guglielmi model. Surface morphology was studied by scanning electron...
