    Shortcut design of reactive distillation columns

    Abstract
    Shortcut design methods can be valuable tools for rapid screening of different separation process alternatives to assess feasibility and determine minimum energy demand. This work presents a variant of the feed angle method (Kraemer et al., 2011), which applies to single- and double-feed reactive distillation columns. The proposed method relies on pinch point analysis and determines the minimum energy demand from the calculation of a tray at the feed pinch. It is fully algorithmic and insensitive to impurities in product specifications.     Abstract
    The paper presents an inventory, perhaps the most comprehensive till date, of the major process-industry accidents involving 'domino effect'. The inventory includes, among other relevant information, the sequence of accidents that had occurred in each domino episode. The information has been analyzed to identify several patterns which may be useful in further work on understanding domino effect and reducing the probability of its occurrence in future.     Abstract
    A dynamical hybrid observer is proposed for online reconstruction of the active mode and continuous states of Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) processes as an integral part of a hybrid control system. A mode observer is designed for estimation of the active mode, and the continuous spatial profiles are estimated by a Distributed and Decentralized Switching Kalman Filter. The proposed hybrid observer has been applied, in silico, for a two-bed, six-step PSA process. The active mode of the process along with the continuous spatial profiles of its adsorption beds have been estimated quite accurately based on very limited number of noise corrupted temperature and pressure measurements. © 2017

    An efficient dye decolorization platform was developed through one-step hydrothermally route based on magnetic polymeric resin and employed in aqueous crystal violet (CV) adsorption. The polymer nanohybrid composed of ZnFe2O4 and hydroxybenzoic acid–resorcinol resin as metal and organic fragment, respectively. Several techniques such as X-ray diffraction, N2 – adsorption desorption, vibration sample magnetometer, field emission scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy were employed for characterization of as-prepared nanohybrid.     Two different approaches of the dynamic optimization for chemical process control engineering applications are presented. The first approach is based on discretizing both the control region and the time interval. This method, known as the Region Reduction Strategy (RRS), employs the previous solution in its next iteration to obtain more accurate results. Moreover, the procedure will continue unless the control region becomes smaller than a prescribed value.     The usual key assumptions in designing quality control charts are the normality and independency of serial samples. While the normality assumption holds in most cases, in many continuous-flow processes such as the chemical processes, serial samples have some degrees of autocorrelation associated with them. Ignoring the autocorrelation structure in constructing control charts, results in decreasing the in-control run length, and so increasing the false alarms.     Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), a mixture of positional and geometrical isomers of linoleic acid with conjugated double bonds, has gained considerable attention because of its anticarcinogenic and obesity treatment properties.     In this paper, a new approach is presented for optimal control of large-scale chemical processes. In this approach, the chemical process is decomposed into smaller sub-systems at the first level, and a coordinator at the second level, for which a two-level hierarchical control strategy is designed.     Lanthanum hydroxide (La(OH)3) nanostructures, including elliptical nanoparticles, octahedral rods and irregular nanoparticles were prepared chemically in NaOH and KOH solutions with 10 M concentration. The obtained powders were characterized with XRD, SEM, TEM and DTA. Crystallinities, morphologies and thermal behavior of the obtained nanostructure powders were investigated under the influence of above mentioned solvents. The effect of chemical's temperature was also determined in one of the solvents (i.e. NaOH).     Abstract
    A new methodology is presented with which the likely impact of accident in one process unit of an industry on other process units can be forecast and assessed. The methodology is based on Monte Carlo Simulation and overcomes the limitations of analytical methods, used hitherto, which were inherently limited in their ability to handle the uncertainty and the complexity associated with domino effect phenomena. This work aims to address these challenges by developing an innovative low temperature synthesis pathway for preparation of carbonate-free perovskite nanocrystals. The method is based on an ultrasound-Assisted wet chemical processing method.     Abstract Inorganic NiTiO3 nano-pigments have received recent attentions as possible candidates for cool pigment materials to be used in building roofs and facades. In this paper, we have attempted to develop an innovative low temperature (50 °C) synthesis pathway for obtaining NiTiO3 nanocrystals based on an ultrasound-assisted wet chemical processing method. The crystallite size, average particle size and band gap are found to be 11 nm, in the range of 10-20 nm and 3.72 eV, respectively. Ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) reflectance spectra show that NiTiO3 nanoparticles have a high reflection peak at ∼580 nm, which is associated with the brilliant yellow color...

    Fuzzy sliding mode control (FSMC) as a robust and intelligent nonlinear control technique is proposed to control processes with severe nonlinearity and unknown models. The performance of the proposed method has been evaluated for both single input single output (SISO) and MIMO nonlinear systems through its application in three severely nonlinear processes that are frequently used as benchmarks of nonlinear process control strategies.
