    Abstract
In the last two decades, quantum dots nanomaterials have garnered a great deal of scientific interest because of their unique properties. Quantum dots (QDs) are inorganic fluorescent nanocrystals in the size range between 1 and 20 nm. Due to their structural properties, they possess distinctive properties and behave in different way from crystals in macro scale, in many branches of human life. Cadmium telluride quantum dots (CdTe QDs) were labeled with 68Ga radio nuclide for fast in vivo targeting and coincidence imaging of tumors. Using instant paper chromatography, the physicochemical properties of the Cadmium telluride quantum dots labeled with 68Ga NPs (68Ga@ CdTe QDs) were found high...

Asymptotic Analysis and Optimal Control of an Integro-Differential System Modeling Healthy and Cancer Cells Exposed to Chemotherapy

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Vosooq Nejad, Parisa (Author) ; Hesaraki, Mahmoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
We consider a system of two coupled integro-differential equations modelling populations of healthy and cancer cells under chemotherapy. Both populations are structured by a phenotypic variables, representing their level of resistance to the treatment. we analyse the asymptotic behaviour of the model under constant infusion of drugs. By designing an appropriate Lyapunov function, we prove that both cell densities converge to Dirac masses. We then define an optimal control problem, by considering all possible infusion protocols and minimising the number of cancer cells over a prescribed time frame. We provide a quasi-optimal strategy and prove that it solves this problem for large final...

Automatic skin cancer (melanoma) detection by processing dermatoscopic images

    , Article 1st International Conference on Machine Vision and Image Processing, MVIP 2020, 19 February 2020 through 20 February 2020 ; Volume 2020-February , 2020 Moazen, H ; Jamzad, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    IEEE Computer Society  2020
    Abstract
Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer if not treated early. The best way to cure melanoma is to treat it in its earliest stage of development. Since melanoma is similar to benign moles in its shape and appearance, it is often mistaken for moles and left untreated. Automatic melanoma detection is an essential way to increase the survival rate of patients by detecting melanoma in its early stages. In this paper, a new method for automatic diagnosis of melanoma using segmented dermatoscopic images is provided. Almost all related methods follow similar approaches but using different features. We have introduced several new features which could improve the accuracy of diagnosing melanoma....

    Abstract
Protein mass spectra pattern recognition is a new forum in which many machine learning algorithms have been conducted to enhance the chance of early cancer diagnosis. The high-dimensionality-small-sample (HDSS) problem of cancer proteomic datasets still requires more sophisticated approaches to improve the classification accuracy. In this study we present a simple ensemble strategy based on measuring the generalizing capability of different subsets of training data and apply it in making final decision. Using a limited number of biomarkers along with 5 classification algorithms, the proposed method achieved a promising performance over a well-known prostate cancer mass spectroscopy dataset....

Core-shell γ-Fe2O3/SiO2/PCA/Ag-NPs hybrid nanomaterials as a new candidate for future cancer therapy

    , Article International Journal of Nanoscience ; Vol. 13, issue. 1 , February , 2014 Soleyman, R ; Pourjavadi, A ; Masoud, N ; Varamesh, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In the current study, γ-Fe2O3/SiO 2/PCA/Ag-NPs hybrid nanomaterials were successfully synthesized and characterized. At first, prepared γ-Fe2O3 core nanoparticles were modified by SiO2 layer. Then they were covered by poly citric acid (PCA) via melting esterification method as well. PCA shell acts as an effective linker, and provides vacancies for conveying drugs. Moreover, this shell as an effective capping agent directs synthesis of silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) via in situ photo-reduction of silver ions by sunlight-UV irradiation. This system has several benefits as a suitable cancer therapy nanomaterial. Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) can guide Ag-NPs and drugs to cancer cells and then...

WN-based approach to melanoma diagnosis from dermoscopy images

    , Article IET Image Processing ; Volume 11, Issue 7 , 2017 , Pages 475-482 ; 17519659 (ISSN) Sadri, A. R ; Azarianpour, S ; Zekri, M ; Emre Celebi, M ; Sadri, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
A new computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) system for detecting malignant melanoma from dermoscopy images based on a fixed grid wavelet network (FGWN) is proposed. This novel approach is unique in at least three ways: (i) the FGWN is a fixed WN which does not require gradient-type algorithms for its construction, (ii) the construction of FGWN is based on a new regressor selection technique: D-optimality orthogonal matching pursuit (DOOMP), and (iii) the entire CAD system relies on the proposed FGWN. These characteristics enhance the integrity and reliability of the results obtained from different stages of automatic melanoma diagnosis. The DOOMP algorithm optimises the network model approximation...

Design of robust control strategy in drug and virus scheduling in nonlinear process of chemovirotherapy

    , Article Computers and Chemical Engineering ; Volume 150 , 2021 ; 00981354 (ISSN) Mobaraki, M ; Moradi, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2021
    Abstract
Since the injection of the oncolytic viruses in the virotherapy process reduces the toxicity and drug resistance inherent in the chemotherapy; chemovirotherapy as a novel combination therapy has become an efficient cancer treatment. The primary purpose of this paper is to design a robust optimal control strategy for the chemovirotherapy through which the tumor density decreases to its stable condition with limited drug and virus delivery. This desired treatment should be responsive in the presence of input disturbances and parametric uncertainties. In this regard, an ODE (Ordinary Differential Equation) mathematical model of the chemovirotherapy process presenting the connection between the...

    Abstract
MOFs exhibit inherent extraordinary features for diverse applications ranging from cataly-sis, storage, and optics to chemosensory and biomedical science and technology. Several procedures including solvothermal, hydrothermal, mechanochemical, electrochemical, and ultrasound techniques have been used to synthesize MOFs with tailored features. A continued attempt has also been directed towards functionalizing MOFs via “post-synthetic modification” mainly by changing linkers (by altering the type, length, functionality, and charge of the linkers) or node components within the MOF framework. Additionally, efforts are aimed towards manipulating the size and morphology of crystallite domains in...

    Abstract
A single-step green method for effective reduction and functionalization of graphene oxide (GO) by glucose was developed. Then, efficacy of the glucose-reduced GO sheets in photothermal therapy of LNCaP prostate cancer cells was investigated in vitro. The GO suspension reduced and functionalized by glucose in the presence of Fe catalyst showed a biocompatible property with an excellent near-infrared (NIR) photothermal therapy efficiency better than hydrazine-reduced GO, single-wall and multi-wall carbon nanotube suspensions which even showed some levels of toxicities. For complete destruction of the cancer cells at some time intervals of NIR irradiation (e.g., 0.5 and 12 min with a power...

    Abstract
Background and Objectives: Melanoma is a dangerous kind of skin disease with a high death rate, and its prevalence has increased rapidly in recent years. Diagnosis of melanoma in a primary phase can be helpful for its cure. Due to costs for dermatology, we need an automatic system to diagnose melanoma through lesion images. Methods: Here, we propose a sparse representation based method for segmentation and classification of lesion images. The main idea of our framework is based on a kernel sparse representation, which produces discriminative sparse codes to represent features in a high-dimensional feature space. Our novel formulation for discriminative kernel sparse coding jointly learns a...

    Abstract
Polyrotaxanes consisting of cyclodextrin rings, polyethylene glycol axes and quantum dot (QD) stoppers were synthesized and characterized. The molecular self-assembly of polyrotaxanes led to spindlelike nano-objects whose shape, size and position were dominated by QD stoppers. Due to their well-defined molecular self-assemblies, carbohydrate backbone, high functionality and several types of functional groups together with the high luminescence yield, synthesized hybrid nanostructures were recognized as promising candidates for biomedical applications. The potential applications of the molecular self-assemblies as drug-delivery systems was investigated by conjugation of doxorubicin (DOX) to...
