    Study of microstructure and dielectric properties of PMN-PZT ceramics via a mixed powder method including microemulsion derived PZT powder

    Abstract
    In this research, (X)PZT-(1-X)PMN ceramics (where X is 0.25, 0.5 and 0.75) were achieved from a conventional mixed-oxide method. Lead Zirconate titanate (PZT) powders with composition near the morphotropic phase boundary have been synthesized via a microemulsion processing route. Modified mixed oxides method was used for obtaining single phase Lead Magnesium niobate (PMN) powder with high relative density (98% of T.D.) and good electrical properties (dielectric constant of ≈10 4 at room temperature).     Porous PZT-PCN ceramics were fabricated with this formula, “0.8 Pb(Zr1/2Ti1/2)O3-0.2 Pb(Co1/3Nb2/3)O3”, abbreviated as “PZTPCN” by introducing Polyvinyl chloride(PVC) and stearic acid (SA) as pore forming agents (PFA) with varied percentages (5, 10 and 15 wt%). The optimum sintering procedure was designed according to the thermogravimetric analysis of pore formers. XRD and FESEM were applied to study the formed phase and the microstructure of the system.     Vibration control is an essential problem in different structure. Smart material can make a structure smart, adaptive and self-controlling so they are effective in active vibration control. Piezoelectric elements can be used as sensors and actuators in flexible structures for sensing and actuating purposes.     Abstract
    An attempt to synthesize pyrochlore free (x)PMN-(1 - x)PZT ceramics (where x is 0, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, 0.9, and 1) by a mixed powder method was made. In this work, a sol-gel prepared PZT powder was mixed with the mixture of milled PbO, MgO and Nb2O5, and sintered in a two step sintering process. The produced samples with high PZT content showed low densities due to the low compaction ratio of PZT powder. The dielectric properties of PZT-rich and PMN-rich materials were high (with dielectric constant of about 19,000 and 33,000 for PZT-rich and PMN-rich ceramics, respectively) while the other samples exhibited low dielectric properties.     Synthesis of PZT Nanotubes by Sol-gel Method Aided by Carbon Nanotubes

    In this project, synthesis of sol-gel derived Pb(Zr0.52Ti0.48)O3 nanotubes in the form of PZT-CNT hybrid, was accomplished by using multi-walled carbon nanotubes as sacrificial template. Simultaneous thermal analyses proved that the as-derived amorphous material crystallized at a significantly low temperature by a considerably low activation energy.     Synthesis of PZT-CNT Hybrid Nanotubes by Sol-gel Method

    Abstract
    In this research, the surface of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs), as template, were coated by Lead zirconate titanate (PZT) with composition of Pb(Zr0.52Ti0.48)O3 via sol-gel process. The final product is called PZT-CNT hybrid material. For functionalizing of CNTs, benzyl alcohol was used. Simultaneous thermal analysis (STA) proved that the as-derived amorphous material crystallized at 520 ˚C. Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) images verified the deposition of a uniform coating of PZT on the surface of CNTs and proved that the functionalizing treatment was done successfully.     Pb(Zr 0.52Ti 0.48)O 3 (PZT) nanotubes with diameters of 80-100 nm and a wall thickness of 15-20 nm were prepared by sol-gel template technique and using multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) as sacrificial templates. The coating process of MWCNT with PZT precursor sol and removal of the carbon nanotubes by an interrupt heat treatment were discussed and studied by Raman spectroscopy.     In the first part of the thesis, we introduce the structure of a Nano-Newton CMOS-MEMS capacitive force sensor. This force sensor has been utilized out-of-plane sensing mechanism with high accuracy and reliability. Also, we discuss about sensitivity analysis of this force sensor. The largest change of capacitance (increased capacitance + decreased capacitance) occurs in ℓ=2/3. Sensitivity for increased capacitance grows by 8.33% and for decreased capacitance grows by 2.27%.
