    Abstract
Malaysian secondary schools are facing a shortage of male teachers. Almost 70% of the teaching profession is dominated by female teachers. There is an obvious gap in the reason why teaching is not preferred by the male gender. This study intends to find the determinants of career success among male teachers with the hope of revealing the career success factors that are associated with male teachers. A survey was done among 140 male teachers in secondary schools in the state of Malacca, Malaysia. Results showed that 4out of 5 of the determinants factors are significantly explaining career success among the teachers (Emotional Intelligence, Person-Job-Fit, Career Adaptability & Work-Life...

The rate of return to education in Iran

    , Article Journal of the Knowledge Economy ; 2021 ; 18687865 (ISSN) Oryoie, A. R ; Vahidmanesh, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Springer  2021
    Abstract
There is no doubt that education is the key to development. An important step in evaluating the condition of education in a society is to estimate the rate of return to education in that society. This paper estimates the private rate of return to schooling for men born in 1951–1983 in Iran using a pseudo-panel fixed-effect model. This is the first study that measures unbiasedly the rate of return to schooling in Iran. We construct the pseudo-panel data using six repeated cross sections of Household Expenditures and Income Surveys between 2008 and 2013. Our estimates show that the overall rate of return is around 9% based on the pseudo-panel fixed-effect approach. The estimates reveal a...

Escort patterns in dual-worker households with students

    Pouyan Press  2021
    Abstract
Individuals have been regarded as independent decision makers in majority of transportation analysis. However, agents’ behaviors are usually affected by the interactions among the members in a group; and therefore, individual decision-making paradigms may result in unrealistic outcomes and erroneous interpretations of the results. In light of this, the present study develops discrete choice models in individual and group levels and compares their prediction power in predicting the choice of escort pattern in dual-worker households with at least one under-18-year-old student. The main purpose is to reveal the efficiency of each approach in analyzing parent-child joint activities and highlight...

How are children accompanied to school?

    , Article Journal of Urban Planning and Development ; Volume 142, Issue 3 , 2016 ; 07339488 (ISSN) Ermagun, A ; Samimi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE)
    Abstract
A growing number of parents accompany their children to and from school, to make sure they travel with the best care and minimum stress. Policies that aim at promoting nonmotorized modes of transportation or at least discouraging auto driving solely for the purpose of picking up or dropping off the kids may not be successful in practice unless primary concerns of parents are treated appropriately. School escorting decisions need to be investigated, as a decreasing trend in students' travel freedom also decreases the tendency toward the use of active modes of travel, complicates intrahousehold activities that need to be considered in travel demand models, and increases externalities (e.g.,...

Effect of School Type on Students’ performance at the National University Entrance Examination and High School Diploma Score

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Khonveh, Navid (Author) ; Vesal, Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The government in special schools tries to offer a higher quality of education than public schools, and get less tuition than private schools. If the achievements of these schools are positive, it can be expanded as a supportive policy for low-income families in order to raise the educational skills of deprived students. This study conducted on the basis of data from an internet-based survey, in which 130,000 volunteers, which were enrolled in the National university entrance examinations in 1389, answered the questionnaire. By using the propensity score matching method, assumed that the unobservable variables for the two groups, one is enrolled in a special school and the other is enrolled...

Mode choice and travel distance joint models in school trips

    , Article Transportation ; 2017 , Pages 1-27 ; 00494488 (ISSN) Ermagun, A ; Samimi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Springer New York LLC  2017
    Abstract
We test a copula-based joint discrete–continuous model to unravel mode choice and travel distance decisions in a joint framework for school trips. This framework explicitly accounts for common unobserved factors that may affect both the mode choice and travel distance. Joint estimation of the models makes a significant difference in the effect of travel distance on willingness to walk to school. The absolute value of the travel distance coefficient in the mode choice model increases by 22% when a joint formulation is adopted instead of the conventional single estimations. We find a significant decrease of 19% in the coefficient of travel safety perception in the joint mode choice model...

On the dissemination of the discourse of going: The case of Iranian for-profit study abroad institution's chronotopic representation of ideal life there

    , Article Language and Communication ; Volume 80 , September , 2021 , Pages 11-24 ; 02715309 (ISSN) Jamshidi, S ; Rezaei, S ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
This research addresses the escalation of the ‘discourse of going’ among Iranian educated people in recent years through highlighting the influential role played by for-profit study abroad institutions. Utilizing a discourse-analytic approach, we engage the theoretical concept of chronotope, caliberation, and commodification to investigate the ways through which for-profit study abroad institutions represent the images of ‘life beyond’. The data were obtained in interview sessions with ten certified Iranian study-abroad institutions. The results of the data analysis revealed two main themes, namely, hypothetical utopia there and dystopia here as well as success here-and-now and...

Impact of temporal correlations on high risk outbreaks of independent and cooperative SIR dynamics

    , Article PLoS ONE ; Volume 16, Issue 7 July , 2021 ; 19326203 (ISSN) Sajjadi, S ; Ejtehadi, M. R ; Ghanbarnejad, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    Public Library of Science  2021
    Abstract
We first propose a quantitative approach to detect high risk outbreaks of independent and coinfective SIR dynamics on three empirical networks: A school, a conference and a hospital contact network. This measurement is based on the k-means clustering method and identifies proper samples for calculating the mean outbreak size and the outbreak probability. Then we systematically study the impact of different temporal correlations on high risk outbreaks over the original and differently shuffled counterparts of each network. We observe that, on the one hand, in the coinfection process, randomization of the sequence of the events increases the mean outbreak size of high-risk cases. On the other...

A Study of Frameworks Leading to Organizational Learning in High Schools of Mofid Educational Center in the last Decade

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Afsah Noodeh, Tooraj (Author) ; Mashayekhi, Alinaghi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The purpose of this research is to determine and measure the mechanisms which cause an increase in pace, scope and intensity of organizational learning at schoolsand four levels are defined in it for learning concept at a high school: beginner, struggling, developed and learning. Having learning capacity increased, the school upgrades to another level. The features of organizational learning are different at each one of the above cited levels. At the beginner level, learning takes place little by little and at a very low pace, and its effect is observable as professional transformation of the organization members. At higher levels, it occurs at a higher rate and enjoys a wider scope and...

The “Context of Discovery” of Scientific Theories: A Study of the Logic Behind it By Focusing on the Marburg School

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Taskhiri, Mohammad Hossein (Author) ; Akbari Takhtameshlou, Javad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
All the main knowledge currents —from the humanities to the experimental sciences— consider themselves explicitly or implicitly indebted to Neo-Kantianism, an approach that, by removing the sensory-material component from the production of reality, prevented the entry of all accidental and unexpected elements into the various fields of human knowledge and gave a not very productive peace to the European world: the peace that came to Europe not only in experimental sciences but also in politics and economy, but it made the existence of Europe weak and sterile. This is the judgment that I have tried to make as far as I can to show what fate the acceptance of Neo-Kantianism brings to man. The...

A joint model for mode choice and escort decisions of school trips

    , Article Transportmetrica A: Transport Science ; Volume 11, Issue 3 , Nov , 2015 , Pages 270-289 ; 23249935 (ISSN) Ermagun, A ; Hossein Rashidi, T ; Samimi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Taylor and Francis Ltd  2015
    Abstract
A considerable shift has occurred in mode choice behaviour and escort pattern of students for their school trips around the world during the last few decades. This shift towards using more non-active modes has undesirable consequences, including physical inactivity among students, traffic jams during peak hours, and adverse environmental impacts. Hence, understanding the behaviour of decision-makers with regard to the mode choice and escorting pattern selection is crucial for controlling the trend of the shift and promoting active modes. This study is the first effort to mathematically model the mode choice and accompaniment pattern selection by parents for the school trip of students, in a...

How far is too far? Providing safe and comfortable walking environments

    , Article Transportation Research Record ; Volume 2586 , 2016 , Pages 72-82 ; 03611981 (ISSN) Ermagun, A ; Samimi, A ; Rashidi, T. H ; Sharif University of Technology
    National Research Council  2016
    Abstract
The use of active modes of travel in school trips has sharply declined for a number of reasons, some of which are rooted in urban design, location of schools, and parental reservations. Thus, policy makers are keen to find practical ways to promote active modes of travel, particularly walking. This study was an effort to determine a tolerable walking distance for school trips and identify factors that made walking trips more reasonable for students. In the vein of understanding the tolerable walking distance, a two-step framework encompassing a random utility method and a hazard-based model was introduced. This framework was applied to a set of data that were collected from middle and high...

Recognition of persian online handwriting using elastic fuzzy pattern recognition

    , Article International Journal of Pattern Recognition and Artificial Intelligence ; Volume 21, Issue 3 , 2007 , Pages 491-513 ; 02180014 (ISSN) Halavati, R ; Bagheri Shouraki, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    2007
    Abstract
Persian is a fully cursive handwriting in which each character may take different forms in different parts of the word, characters overlap and there is a wide range of possible styles. These complexities make automatic recognition of Persian a very hard task. This paper presents a novel approach on recognition of such writings systems which is based on the description of input stream by a sequence of fuzzy linguistic terms; representation of character patterns with the same descriptive language; and comparison of inputs with character patterns using a novel elastic pattern matching approach. As there is no general benchmark for recognition of Persian handwriting, the approach has been tested...

Over Education and Its Wage Consequences in the Labor Market of Iran

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Javaheri, Mohammad Amin (Author) ; Keshavarz Haddad, Gholamreza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
An increasing important issue faced by Iranian labor market at the current decade is the job positions which have been occupying by workers who are not match for them. Over the recent past years the supply of college educated labor has experienced a significant increase, while the demand side of the market has shrunk because of low economic growth. This study intends to examine intensity of the over-education on the individuals’ wage By making two alternative definitions for overeducaion namely; realized match and job analysis. To this end we use households’ income and expenditure survey for 2001, 2005, 2009 and 2012 in rural and urban areas. Theoretical background is based on the Duncan and...

A Study of The Effect of After School Tutoring on Students' National
    University Entrance Exam Performance

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Tavakoli Jaghargh, Reza (Author) ; Vesal, Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
After school tutoring education is a concept that varies widely between countries. Evidence suggests that one of the factors explaining this difference is the existence of competitive tests. There is also evidence for Iran that, because of the existence of competitive test of the national entrance exam, a large percentage of Iranian families use after school tutoring to their children get a successful result in this exam. But the question is how much after school tutoring is effective? The answer to this question is important because if after school tutoring is effective, low-income families are expected to be unable to provide such training, and the national entrance exam will prevent...
