    Abstract
This work employs two membrane bioreactors (with and without carrier) to evaluate the influence of carrier and hydraulic retention time (HRT) on the sludge specifications when removing organic volatile compounds (e.g. styrene and ethylbenzene) from petrochemical wastewater. This study is conducted during three various HRTs. The results indicate that the optimum HRT (e.g. 15 h.) was achieved in the reactor with carrier during biological removal and membrane fouling minimization. During the optimum HRT, the biological removal efficiency for styrene, ethylbenzene, and COD is 99.8 ± 0.1%, 99.8 ± 0.1%, and 99 ± 0.8%, respectively, and the concentration of styrene and ethylbenzene in the exit air...

Particle size distribution (PSD), soluble microbial products (SMP), and extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) for sludge were measured. In addition Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), excitation-emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence spectroscopy, gel permission chromatography (GPC), and EPS analysis were performed for characterization the properties of the formed cake. The results showed that both HZ1 and HZ2 had better function in...

    Abstract
Micro flora of the effluents from a dairy factory in Tehran(Pegah Dairy Processing Plant) were isolated and screened for their ability to reduce the organic matter content and COD of the effluents. 10 bacteria were selected due to reduction in COD content from the 4th to 6th day of incubation at 30 °C and pH =11. Highest COD reduction were obtained by two isolates, BP3 and BP4, 70.7 % and 69.5 %, respectively (The initial COD concentration was 3000 mg/l and reduced to 880 and 920 mg/l).After optimization of the condition for test organisms, big reductions in COD, carbohydrate, fat and protein content of the effluents were observed by BP3 up to 84.70 %, 98 %, 45.30 % and 53 %, respectively...

    Abstract
Since the advent of conventional activated sludge biological treatment plants, their low efficiency in nitrogen and phosphorus removal has become a significant concern. Therefore, in this study, the performance of microalgal-activated sludge membrane bioreactor (MAS-MBR) as a self-biological treatment or as a post-treatment for conventional biological treatments was investigated. A continuous MAS-MBR with two ratios of algae/sludge (only microalgae and 5:1) was used to treat raw and treated wastewater. The optimum case was achieved with the cultivation of mixed algae/sludge in raw wastewater (R2 case). In this case, the ammonium and phosphorus removal efficiencies were 94.36 ± 3.5 and 88.37...

    Abstract
The aim of this research work was to decolorize anaerobically digested (UASB) and aerobically treated distillery wastewater of a process for ethanol production. An Aspergillus species isolated from the soil was used for decolorization. A sequential Plackett-Burman design in three stages was used for optimization of decolorization conditions. Both maximum decolorization and COD reduction under optimized conditions were obtained as 84%. By implementing the optimum values in a pilot scale of an activated sludge system a continuous process for decolorization was conducted. The decolorization efficiency of this system with 48 h retention time was about 75% in a limited period of 4 days. For...

In this study, the ozonation impact on anaerobic digestion of wasted thickened activated sludge of Tehran wastewater treatment plant has been investigated. Regarding that, the thickened activated sludge, a final solid waste of treatment plants, was subjected to ozonation pretreatment to evaluate its characteristics. Three major sludge characteristics were considered for investigating ozonation effects on anaerobic digestion. A comparison of two different ozone doses, i.e., 0.05 and 0.1 gO3 g−1TS was performed for short-term (10 days) and long-term (30 days) sludge retention times. Furthermore, biogas production, sludge composition, dewaterability, and energy balancing, were studied during...

Municipal Wastewater Treatment Using Microalgal-Sludge System

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Amini, Elham (Author) ; Shaygan Salek, Jalaloddin (Supervisor) ; Mehrnia, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
If wastewater is not properly treated, then the environment and human health can be negatively impacted. These impacts can include harm to fish and wildlife populations, oxygen depletion and contamination of drinking water. In the typical wastewater treatment process, the goal of primary, secondary and tertiary effluent treatment is to reduce or remove organic matter, solids, nutrients, disease-causing organisms and other pollutants from the treated wastewater before it is discharged to a body of water. Biological methods for wastewater treatment are much preferable for being more economical and environmentally friendly. Biological treatment of wastewater using algal-bacterial culture...

    Abstract
Abstract Background: The aim of this study is to accelerate and improve aerobic granulation within a Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) by cationic polymer addition. Methods: To identify whether the polymer additive is capable of enhancing granule formation, two SBRs (R1 and R2, each 0.15 m in diameter and 2 m in height) are used by feeding synthetic wastewater. The cationic polymer with concentration of 30 to 2 ppm is added to R2, while no cationic polymer is added to R1. Results: Results show that the cationic polymer addition causes faster granule formation and consequently shorter reactor start-up period. The polymer-amended reactor contains higher concentration of biomass with better...

    Abstract
Biofiltration of Triethylamine (TEA) vapor used as a catalyst in casting operations was evaluated in this study The unit consisted of a 6-L three-stage biofilter containing a mixture of compost and wood chips (40:60 v/v) as the filter medium. Seed microbial population from municipal activated sludge was acclimated for a period of three weeks prior to the actual experimental runs. In the startup period, high pH values up to 10 was observed due to alkaline nature of TEA and inadequate formation of biofilm and low overall biodegradation. Steady increase of organic-N concentration along with gradual upward trend of pressure drop indicated sound establishment of microbial population. Operational...

    Abstract
Most sulfide oxidizing bioreactors are based on pure cultures or artificial mixes of microorganisms with strict requirements for growth, which make the system unstable and do not guarantee their long term performance. The ultimate goal of this study is to develop a natural mix of chemotrophic bacteria that may be applied anaerobically for the treatment of sour gas. Activated sludge from local municipal wastewater treatment plant that was maintained in endogenous anaerobic conditions for one year was used in this study. Total suspended solids (TSS) and volatile suspended solids (VSS) of the sludge was 22 gl-1 and 14.3 gl-1, respectively. A glass culture vessel had a volume of 0.65 L was used...

    Abstract
An upgraded integrated fixed-film activated sludge-oxic settling anoxic (IFAS-OSA) system is a new technology for reducing nutrients and excess sludge. The results showed that the average TN removal efficiency of the IFAS-OSA system was gradually increased up to 7.5%, while the PO4–3-P removal efficiency increased up-to 27%, compared with that of the IFAS system. The COD removal efficiency of the IFAS-OSA system was slightly increased up-to 5.4% and TSS removal efficiency increased up to 10.5% compared with the control system. Biomass yield coefficient (Yobs) in the IFAS and IFAS-OSA systems were 0.44 and 0.24 (gr MLSS/ gr COD). Hence, sludge production decreased by 45%. The average SVI was...
