    Abstract
Steel Plate Shear Walls (SPSWs) have high stiffness, strength, and considerable energy absorption capability, which have persuaded engineers to utilize the system in their practical projects. Some significant characteristic SPSWs have remained unknown despite worthwhile experimental and numerical studies. One of these unknown aspects is the effect of cracks on SPSWs behavior. Various experimental studies have reported the fracture of SPSWs during testing due to crack growth, but none of the experimental tests have studied the crack effect. In this respect, the behavior of SPSWs strengthened with diagonal stiffeners is studied in this paper. To study this, cracks located at the intersection...

Effects of using low yield point steel in steel plate shear walls

    , Article IES Journal Part A: Civil and Structural Engineering ; Vol. 7, Issue. 1 , 2014 , pp. 51-56 Jebelli, H ; Mofid, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Steel plate shear walls are lateral load resisting systems, especially against earthquake excitation. They are constructed with or without stiffeners. Stiffened walls are more ductile than those without stiffeners. In this research a numerical study using finite element analysis via a finite element program is conducted. Nine thin steel plate shear wall models were considered in three groups of 5-storey, 10-storey and 15-storey walls. In each group different yield point steel for the infill plate was used. The yield points of infill plates were assumed to be 160, 200 and 240 MPa. The results showed that using low yield point (LYP) steel will increase energy dissipation of models by up to...

    , Article Journal of Constructional Steel Research ; Volume 114 , 2015 , Pages 258-268 ; 0143974X (ISSN) Farzampour, A ; Laman, J. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2015
    Abstract
Corrugated steel plate and simple steel plate shear wall construction is a widely accepted and efficient lateral force resisting construction. The widespread use is motivated by the large initial stiffness, high level of energy absorption, and ability to accommodate openings. There is a dearth of information regarding the detailed nonlinear, inelastic behavior of corrugated steel plate shear walls, particularly walls with openings. Presented here are the results of a detailed, numerical parametric study comparing corrugated steel plate and simple steel plate shear walls, with and without openings. Parameters studied are plate thickness, angle of corrugation, opening size, and opening...

Steel plate shear walls having door openings with different arrangements of stiffeners

    , Article Advances in Structural Engineering ; Volume 22, Issue 10 , 2019 , Pages 2222-2235 ; 13694332 (ISSN) Rostami, P ; Mofid, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    SAGE Publications Inc  2019
    Abstract
As steel plate shear walls are typically used in the building central cores around the elevators and stairs, introduction of an opening as door seems to be inevitable in steel plate shear wall spans. Due to the weakening of the steel plate shear walls’ performance caused by this particular type of opening, the use of stiffeners around the opening is necessary. Nevertheless, introduction of stiffeners around all sides of the opening, which does continue to boundary elements, is very expensive and inefficient. Therefore, the study on the effect of different arrangements of stiffeners on the behavior of steel plate shear walls is significant. In this research, a number of steel plate shear...

Numerical and Experimental Investigation of Double Corrugated Steel Plate Shear Walls

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Ghodratian Kashan, Mohyeddin (Author) ; Maleki, Shervin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Recently, corrugated steel plate shear walls (CSPSWs) have been shown to be an efficient lateral force resisting system for building structures. Corrugated plates have higher out-of-plane stiffness and improved buckling stability in comparison with flat plates which result in improved hysteretic behavior. The application of CSPSWs in tall buildings requires a wide range of thicknesses for the infill plates. Yet, the available range of thicknesses of corrugated plates is limited because of the restrictions associated with the process of cold forming. One solution to this problem is to use two corrugated plates as an infill plate. In this research, the cyclic performance of double corrugated...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hosseinkhani, Ali (Author) ; Mofid, Massoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The Steel shear wall is one of resisting lateral load system which has been used since 1970.with respect to design we can apply this system with or without stiffeners .here our investigation is about steel shear wall without stiffeners. Also this system is called SSW. Since using this system is new fashion, there is no specific code for it in Iranian 2800 code .also there is no code for using this system in reinforced concrete frames in any code which makes this investigation much harder. Need to obtain R which is one of the most important seismic parameters, encouraged us to consider R for SSW in 3 to 7 storey structures .we obtained static pushover curves with nonlinear static analysis...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Eghbali Farkoush, Vahid (Author) ; Khalu, Alireza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis different steel plate shear walls have been investigated using ABAQUS software. These investigations have been focused on various topics, including both boundary frame elements and also the in-fill plate. The main results have been gathered by utilizing different steel plate thicknesses and different boundary frame elements. In order to achieve a better understanding of the effects of both of these elements, various aspect ratios have also been investigated. Moment of inertia has been noted as the main property of both beams and columns used in SPSW. Comparison of the gained results is noteworthy. They show a variety of changes in the load-displacement diagrams, due to changes...

Performance Analysis and Consideration of Steel Shear Walls and Bracing in Irregular Plans of Mid-rise and High-rise Structures

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Fathi, Morvarid (Author) ; Mofid, Masoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Plan irregularities of structures due to the governing regional and environmental conditions are a pretty important issue from the architectural as well as structural design point of view. Most of the time, especially in mid-rise and/or high-rise buildings with plan irregularities, dual system of Moment Resisting Frames (MRF), accompanied with shear walls are strongly suggested. Considering the previous works and investigations of researchers, reveals not too many studies and researches in this regards; specially, when it comes into new area and application of the Steel Shear Walls (SSW). In the present work, at first it is proposed to model and analyze a MRF steel structure with plan...

Numerical Modeling of the Behavior of an Innovative Steel Shear Wall

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Valikhani, Alireza (Author) ; Khonsari, Vahid (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The behavior of a new steel shear wall, already devised by the supervisor of this project, and tested by other students, was modeled numerically. Such numerical simulation was carried out using the Finite Element Methods of analysis. Hexagonal solid elements were employed in order to discretize the tested specimens and those parts of the test assembly which had to be included in the models. Both, Monotonic and Cyclic tests were simulated numerically. Comparison of the tests results with those of the numerical models showed fair correlation between them. Percentages of error in the dissipated energy for the three monotonic tests were 6.9%, 6.4% and 11.2%, respectively, whereas that of the...

A Study of Steel Frames with Steel Plate Shear Wall Resisting System Subjected to Blast Loading

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Shabanlou, Mohammad (Author) ; Aligani Moghaddam, Hassan (Supervisor) ; Saedi Darian, Amir (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
Over the last years, terrorist attacks and accidental explosions have brought on a need for research in the field of structural engineering to study the response of a building subjected to blast loading conditions. An explosion within or surrounding a building, not only can have disastrous effects causing both structural damage or failure, but may also lead to the death of human beings. In order to prevent these catastrophes and gain a better understanding of responses of the buildings and lateral resisting systems with different characteristics, the study of the behavior of the lateral resisting systems under blast loading conditions is essential. This research will also aid in the...

Study of the Effect of Strip Opening on the Sides of the Steel Plate Shear Wall

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Kavei, Sina (Author) ; Khaloo, Alireza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
One of the lateral-load bearing systems that has been recommended since almost 40 years ago is the steel plate shear wall (SPSW) system, which consists of a steel plate surrounded by beams and columns in each story. As for the performance of SPSWs, it is assumed that the boundary members of the wall’s plate, i.e. beams and columns, have sufficient stiffness and strength, so that they would not yield by the tensile stresses exerted due to the post-buckling behavior of the plate (tension field); and the global stability of the structure is still maintained. This assumption leads to significantly increased dimensions of the sections applied in the wall’s boundary members, particularly its...

Structural Performance Assessment of Large Unstiffened Openings in Steel Plate Shear Walls and Introduction of Plate-Frame Interaction in Steel Plate Shear Walls with Perforated Infill Plates

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Darvishi, Hadi (Author) ; Mofid, Masood (Supervisor)
    Abstract
One of the advantages of Steel Plate Shear Walls (SPSWs) is the possibility of using openings with varying sizes in the infill plates depending on a need basis. Openings are used for various reasons, such as the possibility of installing utilities and for architectural reasons. However, the latest research studies suggest that the use of large-sized openings in infill plates calls for the use of heavy stiffeners or special measures for ensuring system stability. The seismic behavior of two SPSWs with large unstiffened opening (one with a rectangular opening in the middle of the plate and the other with two oval openings on the sides of the infill plate) was studied experimentally and...

    Abstract
This paper presents a comparison of analytical and experimental results of an investigation on the diagonally stiffened steel plate shear walls (SPWs). Experimental studies were carried out on three 1/3-scaled, one story single bay shear walls. The first specimen was a control specimen which was unstiffened and the other two specimens were diagonally stiffened using different stiffener configurations. Finite-element models of full SPWs are developed using finite element model. The results are compared with experimental results to investigate the influence of stiffeners on the behavior of the specimens. Good agreement between analytical and experimental models is found in point of failure...

    Abstract
In spite of existing comprehensive studies on the behavior of steel plate shear wall (SPSW), some aspects of the SPSW have remained unknown, yet. One of the important aspects that is unknown is the crack effect on the SPSW behavior in linear and nonlinear zones. Some experimental studies have been reported that SPSWs were fractured due to crack propagation. Therefore, the crack effect on the behavior of SPSW should be accounted in considering of SPSW behavior. Although the effect of crack on the thin SPSW has been investigated to a limited extent numerically, stiffened SPSPW, especially diagonally stiffened SPSW, has not been studied. In doing so, in this paper, the effect of crack effect on...

Analysis on Characteristics and Behavior of Steel Structures with Steel Plate Shear Walls

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Sadati, Mohammad (Author) ; Mofid, Masood (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Steel plate shear walls (SPSWs) are popular lateral force resisting systems whose practical applications range from high seismic regions to medium and low seismic areas and wind load applications. The factors which make SPSW attractive include its energy dissipation capacity, excellent ductility, constructability, speed of construction compared to concrete shear walls, reduced architectural footprint compared to concrete shear walls, and increased inelastic deformation capacity as compared to braced frames and concrete shear walls.
In this research, characteristics and behavior of un-stiffened perforated SPSWs using non-linear finite elements software has been investigated. In order to...

Optimized design procedure for coupling panels in steel plate shear walls

    , Article Structural Design of Tall and Special Buildings ; Volume 26, Issue 1 , 2017 ; 15417794 (ISSN) Sadeghi Eshkevari, S ; Dolatshahi, K. M ; Mofid, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Coupling beams have had a widespread application as performance enhancing devices within concrete structures and more recently also in steel structures. However, the conventional coupling beams are not so efficient in coupling distant walls. In this paper, a novel form of coupling members, namely, coupling panels is proposed and, then, the application for a nine-story building is investigated. Coupling panels are steel plates which are exerted in the intermediate spans between adjacent shear walls and act as a mega-coupling beam. First, a verified finite element model is constructed to demonstrate coupling panel behavior along with its global structural mechanism. Subsequently, a nine story...

    Abstract
Steel plate shear walls (SPSWs) have shown a desirable performance in experimental studies and past earthquakes. The advantages of the SPSW and its good performance against lateral loads persuade designers to utilize the system in their practical projects. Some important aspects of the SPSW have remained unknown in spite of valuable experimental and numerical studies. One of these unknown characteristics is the effect of cracks on the SPSW behavior. Several experimental studies have reported fracture in SPSW due to crack propagation during testing, but the experimental studies have not investigated the crack effect. Due to low thickness of steel plate and inherence of crack, the crack...
