    Abstract
In this paper, focusing on the frequency domain, we write the constitutive relation and the Helmholtz equation for linear, dispersive, and inhomogeneous time-varying media. Next, by assuming spatial homogeneity, we simplify the equations and explain how to calculate dispersion curves (the angular frequency with respect to the wave vector) for propagating waves. Furthermore, we show that under the simplifying assumption of instantaneous response, the developed general approach provides the same dispersion curves as reported earlier for the dispersion-less model of time-varying dielectric media. We believe that this study is important for investigations of wave phenomena in time-varying media,...

    Abstract
We propose a time-varying dual accelerated gradient method for minimizing the average of n strongly convex and smooth functions over a time-varying network with n nodes. We prove that the time-varying dual accelerated gradient ascent method converges at an R-linear rate with the time to reach an ϵ-neighborhood of the solution being of O([Formula presented]ln⁡[Formula presented]), where c is a constant depending on the graph and objective function parameters and M is a constant depending on the initial values. We test the proposed method on two classes of problems: L2-regularized least squares and logistic classification problems. For each class, we generate 1000 problems and use the...

Fault-tolerant control considering time-varying bounds on faults

    , Article Transactions of the Institute of Measurement and Control ; Volume 40, Issue 10 , 2018 , Pages 2982-2990 ; 01423312 (ISSN) Khatibi, M ; Haeri, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
This paper presents a novel fault-tolerant control strategy to compensate the time-varying loss of actuators’ effectiveness. It considers intermediate situations where the fault is not determined precisely (unlike active approaches) but overall estimations about its rate and final value are available through the previous experiences and/or experiments. Based on the estimations, two upper and lower time-varying bounds on the actuators’ effectiveness are established to be exploited in the procedure of controller design. In a special case, where these bounds are constant, the method will be reduced to the conventional passive approach. Also, actuator saturation and the effects of (Formula...

    Abstract
A general and closed form solution of wave propagation in a metallic slab waveguide undergoing any arbitrary, time-varying function of permittivity is presented. The formulation is general and accurate to account for all temporal variations of permittivity. Parametric amplification and frequency conversion is demonstrated using this closed form formulation. Moreover, all results are validated and confirmed using full wave FDTD simulation. The in-house FDTD MATLAB code takes into account time variations of the permittivity

Strong structural controllability of networks under time-invariant and time-varying topological perturbations

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control ; Volume 66, Issue 3 , 2021 , Pages 1375-1382 ; 00189286 (ISSN) Mousavi, S. S ; Haeri, M ; Mesbahi, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
This article investigates the robustness of strong structural controllability for linear time-invariant and linear time-varying directed networks with respect to structural perturbations, including edge deletions and additions. In this direction, we introduce a new construct referred to as a perfect graph associated with a network with a given set of control nodes. The tight upper bounds on the number of edges that can be added to, or removed from a network, while ensuring strong structural controllability, are then derived. Moreover, we obtain a characterization of critical edge sets, the maximal sets of edges whose any subset can be respectively added to or removed from a network while...

    Abstract
A method for real-time extraction and measurement of individual harmonic components of a power signal with time-varying characteristics is presented. The proposed method, which is based on the concept of adaptive notch filter (ANF), adaptively decomposes the measured power signal into its constituting components. The structural simplicity of the algorithm renders it desirable from the standpoint of practical, analog and hardware implementations. Simulation studies confirm the desirable transient and steady-state performances of the proposed method. © 2006 IEEE

Importance analysis considering time-varying parameters and different perturbation occurrence times

    , Article Quality and Reliability Engineering International ; Volume 35, Issue 8 , 2019 , Pages 2558-2578 ; 07488017 (ISSN) Noroozian, A ; Baradaran Kazemzadeh, R ; Zio, E ; Akhavan Niaki, S. T ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Importance measures are integral parts of risk assessment for risk-informed decision making. Because the parameters of a risk model, such as the component failure rates, are functions of time and a perturbation (change) in their values can occur during the mission time, time dependence must be considered in the evaluation of the importance measures. In this paper, it is shown that the change in system performance at time t, and consequently the importance of the parameters at time t, depends on the parameters perturbation time and their value functions during the system mission time. We consider a nonhomogeneous continuous time Markov model of a series-parallel system to propose the...

    , Article Wec 05: Fourth World Enformatika Conference, Istanbul, 24 June 2005 through 26 June 2005 ; Volume 6 , 2005 , Pages 156-158 ; 9759845857 (ISBN); 9789759845858 (ISBN) Yaghobi, M ; Haeri, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this paper, we show that the stability can not be achieved with current stabilizing MPC methods for some unstable processes. Hence we present a new method for stabilizing these processes. The main idea is to use a new time varying weighted cost function for traditional GPC. This stabilizes the closed loop system without adding soft or hard constraint in optimization problem. By studying different examples it is shown that using the proposed method, the closed-loop stability of unstable nonminimum phase process is achieved. COPYRIGHT © ENFORMATIKA

Impacts of time-varying electricity rates on forward contract scheduling of DisCos

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery ; Vol. 29, issue. 2 , 2014 , p. 733-741 ; ISSN: 8858977 Safdarian, A ; Fotuhi-Firuzabad, M ; Lehtonen, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Time-varying electricity rates enable demand-side potentials, which provide an opportunity for distribution companies (DisCos) to hedge against the financial risk imposed by volatile spot market prices and uncertain customers' load. In particular, time-varying rates can be effective alternatives for at least a portion of costly forward contracts. This paper establishes a stochastic framework to determine optimal forward market purchases under time-varying rates. Various electricity rating strategies with different time intervals covering flat, time-of-use, and real-time pricing schemes are considered. The objective of the framework is to maximize DisCo's expected profit while the exposure...

Enhanced strategy to sample newborn targets within nonthresholded measurements

    , Article 2013 21st Iranian Conference on Electrical Engineering ; May , 2013 , Page(s): 1 - 5 ; 9781467356343 (ISBN) Danaee, M. R ; Behnia, F ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Recently, Random finite set theory has attracted researchers' interest in the field of multitarget tracking time varying number of targets. Its main drawback is it is not essentially formulated for nonthresholded measurements. This paper examines the problem of multitarget tracking with time varying number of targets dealing with raw and nonthresholded measurements. Recursive equations for updating the joint multi target state posterior density are approximated by a new enhanced particle filter that includes effective strategies to tackle the challenges of effective track initialization and deletion with limited resources, as well as doing the data association step implicitly. Simulations...

    Blind two-dimensional super-resolution in multiple-input single-output linear systems

    , Article IEEE Signal Processing Letters ; 2020 Sayyari, S ; Daei, S ; Haddadi, F ; Sharif University of Technology
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc  2020
    Abstract
In this paper, we consider a multiple-input single-output (MISO) linear time-varying system whose output is a superposition of scaled and time-frequency shifted versions of inputs. The goal of this paper is to determine system characteristics and input signals from the single output signal. More precisely, we want to recover the continuous time-frequency shift pairs, the corresponding (complex-valued) amplitudes and the input signals from only one output vector. This problem arises in a variety of applications such as radar imaging, microscopy, channel estimation and localization problems. While this problem is naturally ill-posed, by constraining the unknown input waveforms to lie in...

Frequency conversion and parametric amplification using a virtually rotating metasurface

    Abstract
We analyze the scattering of circularly polarized electromagnetic waves from a time-varying metasurface having a time-dependent surface susceptibility that locally mimics a rotating, anisotropic surface. Such virtually rotating metasurfaces (VRM) can be realized by means of electronically tunable surface elements and reach microwave-range rotation frequencies. It is shown that the scattered field contains the incident tone, as well as a single up-or down converted tone which differs by twice the rotation frequency of the surface. A simple full frequency converter is then proposed by augmenting the VRM with a metal screen separated by a proper distance. It is shown that after reflection from...

    Abstract
In this article, a novel cooperative secondary voltage/frequency control considering time-varying delays and noises in fading channels is presented for an autonomous alternating current (AC) voltage sourced-based converter (VSC)-based microgrid (MG), including inverter-interfaced distributed generations (DGs). Fading phenomenon makes complex random fluctuations on the voltage and frequency of every DG received from its neighbor DGs. In multi-agent cooperative systems, in addition to the total additive noise and time-variant delay, a multiplicative complex random variable is considered to model the main received signal and its replicas due to multipath propagation. The proposed...

Finite-time stabilisation of a class of time-varying nonlinear systems by a mixed event-based and continuous-time strategy

    Abstract
In this paper, a mixed event-triggered and continuous-time control method is proposed, which can guarantee finite-time stabilisation of the fixed point in a class of time-varying nonlinear systems. Benefiting from an event-triggered framework, which is constructed based on the indefinite Lyapunov theory, the communication/computation costs in the transient time can be reduced by using the proposed method. In a special case, this method is converted to a fully event-triggered control strategy for asymptotic stabilisation of the fixed point in the considered class of time-varying nonlinear systems. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by numerical simulations. © 2021 Informa UK...

Prescribed-time control for perturbed euler-lagrange systems with obstacle avoidance

Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc  2021
    Abstract
This paper introduces a class of time-varying controllers for Euler-Lagrange systems such that the convergence occurs at an arbitrary finite time, independently of initial conditions, and free of chattering. The proposed controller is based on a mapping technique and is designed in two steps: First, a conventional (obstacle avoidance) asymptotically stable controller is specified for the nominal system; then, by a simple substitution, a prescribed-time (obstacle avoidance) controller is achievable for the perturbed system. It is proved that the proposed scheme is uniformly prescribed-time stable for unperturbed systems and prescribed-time attractive for perturbed systems as it rejects...

Analysis and Design of Metagratings for Controlling Electromagnetic Waves

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Rahmanzadeh, Mahdi (Author) ; Khavasi, Amin (Supervisor) ; Rejaei, Behzad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Metagrating is a new concept for wavefront manipulation that, unlike phase gradient metasurfaces, does not suffer from low efficiency and also has a less complicated fabrication process. However, they have some drawbacks, which we are trying to resolve in this thesis. First, a compound metallic grating is proposed for anomalous reflection. We propose an analytical method for analyzing the electromagnetic response of this grating and show that the structure can have unprecedented near-to-unitary efficiency. Next, two-dimensional (2D) metagratings are proposed for diffraction pattern control. We first present an analytical method for diffraction analysis of 2D compound metallic grating. As a...

    Abstract
In this paper, we propose a class of second-order continuous-time consensus protocols in networks with bounded communication delay and switching interaction topologies. We present a sufficient condition under which the information states of all agents approach common values. The convergence analysis relies on properties of nonnegative matrices and graph theory and requires that the union of communication graphs has a spanning tree over a bounded period of time. In addition, convergence in leader-following consensus is proved for switching topology and time-varying agents' awareness. Also the appropriate feedback gains are computed via given mathematical relations

Time-varying assessment of heart rate variability parameters using respiratory information

    , Article Computers in Biology and Medicine ; Volume 89 , 2017 , Pages 355-367 ; 00104825 (ISSN) Goldoozian, L. S ; Zahedi, E ; Zarzoso, V ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Analysis of heart rate variability (HRV) is commonly used for characterization of autonomic nervous system. As high frequency (HF, known as the respiratory-related) component of HR, overlaps with the typical low frequency (LF) band when the respiratory rate is low, a reference signal for HF variations would help in better discriminating the LF and HF components of HR. The present study proposes a model for time-varying separation of HRV components as well as estimation of HRV parameters using respiration information. An autoregressive moving average with exogenous input (ARMAX) model of HRV is considered with a parametrically modeled respiration signal as the input. The model parameters are...

Adaptive synchronization of two different chaotic systems with time varying unknown parameters

    Abstract
In this paper a nonlinear control method based on Lyapunov stability theorem is proposed to design an adaptive controller for synchronizing two different chaotic systems. It is assumed that the unknown parameters of the drive and the response chaotic systems are time varying. It is shown that the proposed scheme can identify the system parameters if the system parameters are time invariant and the richness conditions is satisfied. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed technique it has been applied to Lorenz-Chen dynamic systems, as drive-response systems. Simulation results indicate that the proposed adaptive controller has a high performance in synchronizing two chaotic systems....
