    Abstract
Magnetic nanoparticles of CuFe2O4 were applied as catalyst system for one-pot thiophosphate synthesis via the reaction of aryl sulfonyl chlorides with H-phosphonates under conventional heating conditions. This is an extremely efficient and green method for thiophosphate synthesis under base- and solvent-free conditions. Various thiophosphates were obtained in good to excellent yields under the optimized reaction conditions in a short time. The catalyst can be easily recycled from the reaction by an external magnetic field and reused for the next run. In this study, TD-DFT B3LYP/6-31 + G(d) calculations are in good accord with the experimental results. A comparison between experimental and...

    Abstract
Electrical properties and electronic structure of Bi1-xCa xFe1-yMnyO3-δ grown by pulsed-laser deposition on BaTiO3/SiO2/Si substrate were investigated. Results showed that Ca has drastic effect on symmetry of crystal and electrical poperties of BiFeO3. On the other hand, Mn revealed to have more radical effect on optical properties and energy gap of the compound. XPS results represented that although Ca tend to decrease Fe valence state, Mn tends to stabilize it at 3+ (at least in this concentrations). UV-visible study yielded bandgap of 2.51-2.81 eV (at 300 K) for different concentrations of Ca and Mn. UV-visible spectra also revealed sub-bandgap defect transitions at 2.2 and 2.4 eV....

    Abstract
A readout box prototype for the CMS Hadron Forward calorimeter upgrade was built and tested in the CERN H2 beamline. The prototype was designed to enable simultaneous tests of different readout options for the four anode upgrade PMTs, new front-end electronics design and new cabling. The response of the PMTs with different readout options was uniform and the background response was minimal. Multi-channel readout options further enhanced the background elimination. Passing all the electronic, mechanical and physics tests, the readout box proved to be capable of providing the forward hadron calorimeter operational requirements in the upgrade era

    Abstract
This study describes the synthesis of TiO2/WO3 composite systems with a varying concentration of WO3 by a glucose-template assisted method and demonstrates their round-the-clock photoactivity performance towards the degradation of methanol (MeOH) under illumination and dark conditions. XRD results indicated a biphasic anatase-rutile nature of TiO2, with tunable concentrations with respect to the WO3 loading. WO3 incorporation extended the light absorption of the system towards visible light, increasing the observed photoactivity. The obtained results were further validated using photo-electrochemical investigations such as photocurrent measurements and the impedance response of the systems....

Comparative study on the effect of nitrogen-donor groups versus macro-ring size in O2Nx-azacrowns on the complexation with [60]fullerene

    , Article Fullerenes Nanotubes and Carbon Nanostructures ; Vol. 22, issue. 4 , 2014 , pp. 322-331 ; ISSN: 1536383X Ghanbari, B ; Mahloojy, N ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The interaction of [60]fullerene with a newly synthesized series of 17-to 21-membered macrocyclic ligands containing an O2N3-donor set has been investigated. The formation constants (K) arising from their complexation with [60]fullerene macrocycles, having various ring size, were measured in CHCl3 media by UV-visible spectroscopy applying Benesi-Hildebrand (BH) equation and their stoichiometries were also determined by the Job method. The best K value was measured for 20-membered ring macrocycle in which a 1:1 complexation stoichiometry with [60]fullerene was dominant. Furthermore, 1H NMR spectroscopy data reveled that the macrocylic ligand coordinates [60]fullerene via the nitrogen-donor...

    , Article Transactions of the Indian Ceramic Society ; Volume 70, Issue 4 , Jan , 2011 , Pages 227-232 ; 0371750X (ISSN) Karbassi, M ; Nemati, A ; Zari, M. H ; Ahadi, K ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
The microemulsion method was successfully used to prepare a series of TiO2, Fe oxide and SiO2 doped TiO2 nanoparticles at Fe/Ti atomic ratio of 10% and Si/Ti atomic ratio of 15%. The molar ratio of water to surfactant (W0) was 2. The samples were calcinated at 350°C. The structural features of TiO2, Fe oxide and SiO 2-TiO2 were investigated by XRD, UV-Visible spectroscopy, SEM and TEM. XRD data verified the formation of typical characteristic anatase form in all the prepared Fe and SiO2-doped TiO2 samples. In comparison with the pure TiO2, Fe oxide and SiO 2-TiO2 samples were relatively large in particle size, indicating that doping with Fe oxide and SiO2 can help in increasing the particle...

    Abstract
In this study, titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanotube array (TNA) films are fabricated via anodization of titanium (Ti) sheet. After annealing, the films consisted of well ordered, vertically oriented TNAs of 125±6nm diameter, 38±3nm wall thickness, and 2.9±0.3μm in length. Cadmium sulfide (CdS) nanoparticles are deposited on the synthesized TNAs by sequential-chemical bath deposition (S-CBD) method with different immersion cycle (n) to produce heterogeneous TNA/CdS-n (n=10, 20 and 30) nanostructures. UV-visible absorption spectra of the samples revealed that the absorption edge of CdS modified TNAs was shifted to a higher wavelength with respect to the pure TNAs indicating band gap reduction of...

    Abstract
Branched hierarchical zinc oxide nanowires (BH-ZnO NWs) were fabricated successfully by a facile and rapid synthesis using two-step growth process. Initially, ZnO NWs have been prepared by anodizing zinc foil at room temperature and followed by annealing treatment. Then, the BH- ZnO NWs were grown on the ZnO NWs by a solution based method at very low temperature (31 oC). The BH- ZnO NWs with different aspect ratio were obtained by varying reaction time (0.5, 2, 5, 10 h). Photocatalytic activity of the samples was studied under both UV and visible light. The results indicated that the optimized BH-ZnO NWs (5 h) as a photocatalyst exhibited the highest photoactivity with about 3 times higher...

    Abstract
The electronic conductor-insulator transition in Ca-doped BiFeO 3 films grown by pulsed-laser deposition technique has been investigated. Nature of the transition is resolved to be Mott type through the control of band-filling. Calcium resolved to have colossal effect on enhancing the electrical conductivity of BiFeO 3, but it did not affect band gap of the mother phase perceptibly. UV-visible study yielded band gap of 2.72-2.81 eV (at 300 K) for different concentrations of calcium. Both UV-visible and photoluminescence spectra revealed sub-band gap transitions at 2.17 and 2.38 eV, of which the latter might be ascribed to the oxygen vacancies

Formation of the effective carbonaceous bonds between the ZnO and the MWCNTs was also investigated through photoinactivation of Escherichia coli bacteria on surface of the both unfunctionalized and functionalized MWCNT-ZnO nanocomposites. The functionalized MWCNT-ZnO nanocomposites showed significantly stronger photoinactivation of the bacteria than the...

Interstitial sulfur photoluminescence in thermochemically synthesized CdS nanocrystals (NCs)

    , Article EPJ Applied Physics ; Volume 56, Issue 1 , 2011 ; 12860042 (ISSN) Molaei, M ; Saievar Iranizad, E ; Marandi, M ; Taghavinia, N ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
We have synthesized CdS NCs (NCs) by a thermochemical approach. CdSO 4 and Na2S2O3 were used as the precursors and thioglycolic acid (TGA) was used as capping agent molecule. The structure and optical property of the NCs were characterized by means of XRD, TEM, UV-visible optical spectroscopy and photoluminescence (PL). XRD and TEM analyses demonstrated hexagonal phase CdS NCs with an average size of around 2 nm. Synthesized NCs exhibited a band gap of about 3.21 eV and showed a broad band emission from 400 to 750 nm centered at 503 nm. This broad band emission is related to surface states of CdS and our results showed that the emission peak can be attributed to the interstitial sulfur. The...

Morphology transition control of polyaniline from nanotubes to nanospheres in a soft template method

    , Article Polymer International ; Volume 64, Issue 1 , June , 2015 , Pages 88-95 ; 09598103 (ISSN) Pirhady Tavandashti, N ; Ghorbani, M ; Shojaei, A ; Sharif University of Technology
John Wiley and Sons Ltd  2015
    Abstract
A soft template route is reported for the fabrication of polyaniline nanospheres via the oxidative polymerization of aniline in the presence of β-naphthalenesulfonic acid (β-NSA) as both surfactqant and dopant, and ammonium persulfate as oxidant at 2-5°C. Control over the morphology and size of the nanoparticles was achieved by changing the reaction medium via addition of an organic cosolvent (i.e. ethanol or ethylene glycol) and by controlling the concentrations of aniline and β-NSA and the molar ratio of β-NSA to aniline. By this means the size of the β-NSA-aniline micelles and the way that aniline monomer interacts with the micelles were controlled. In fact the lower dielectric constant...

Acid blue 92 photocatalytic degradation in the presence of scavengers by two types photocatalyst

    , Article Environmental Progress and Sustainable Energy ; Volume 31, Issue 3 , 2012 , Pages 371-378 ; 19447442 (ISSN) Elahifard, M. R ; Gholami, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Two types of nanosized photocatalyst, TiO 2 P-25 and ap/Ag/AgBr/TiO 2, were used for decolorization of Acid Blue 92 (AB92) in dark, visible light (V-L), and UV media. Under UV and V-L, the effect of three possible photodegradation processes of AB92 including photocatalytic degradation, self-photosensitization, and direct photolysis were studied. Results showed that in UV/photocatalysts, photocatalytic degradation is the major process for photodecolorization. However, in the presence of TiO 2, self-photosensitization has the major role under V-L. Because of the presence of AgBr as photoactive center in ap/Ag/AgBr/TiO 2, the main process is the photocatalytic degradation in V-L. By using...
