  7. Abstract:
  8. TiO2 is one of the most frequently used photocatalyst materials. Porous TiO2 nanostructure has drawn much attention recently due to high decomposition rate of organic pollutants. In this thesis, TiO2 nanoparticles were synthesized via sol-gel method and were coated on cotton and jute fiber separately; besides, the impregnated fibers were heat treated to eliminate cellulose. Titanium tetraisopropoxide (TTIP) was used as a precursor and two solutions, acidic and alcoholic, were used as the primary solutions for synthesis. In acidic solution, the crystalline phase and size distribution of TiO2 nanoparticles were evaluated with changing pH.Then, the appropriate pH was chosen for coating. In alcoholic solution, the effects of used surfactant (CTAB) on TiO2 nanostructure were examined. The XRD pattern result of the synthesized nanoparticles from acidic solution showed rutile and anatase at low pH and pure anatase at high pH. TEM (Transmission Electron Microscopy) picture of the TiO2 nanoparticles at pH=1.85 exhibited semi-spherical particles in size of 10-15 nm. Although the nanoparticles were prepared in the room temperature, the SAD pattern showed perfect ring indicating crystalline plane. The measured surface area of these TiO2 nanoparticles was about 214 m2g-1. The XRD pattern result of the TiO2 nanostructure from alcoholic solution showed anatase phase and SiO2. The SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) pictures indicated that nanoparticles in acidic solution had been followed the initial morphology of cotton and jute and they had been adsorbed in suitable sites in fiber’s surface. After elimination of cellulose from impregnated cotton and jute, TiO2 nanofiber and layer nanostructure were obtained from cotton and jute respectively. Fibers, which were coated with nanoparticles in alcoholic solution and were heat treated for eliminating of cellulose, resulted porous nanostructure containing spherical nano TiO2 with some ashes. The degradation of gaseous formaldehyde in presence of TiO2 nanostructure, obtained from alcoholic solution and coated on jute substrate, was 26% of its initial amount
