  7. Abstract:
  8. Within the past few years, soil and groundwater resources contamination by petroleum-based products has become of great concern in the environmental engineering literature as a serious environmental problem throughout the world. Amongst petroleum hydrocarbons, groundwater contamination by Non-Aqueous Phase Liquids (NAPLs) is one of the most important environmental problems. In order to effectively remediate contaminated sites, knowledge of the distribution of the NAPLs is essential. The success of the remedial design will be dependent on the ability to predict the subsurface distribution of the NAPLs. Release of these compounds from spills and leaky underground storage tanks into subsurface is anticipated, and therefore having tools to predict their fate and transport in groundwater is a matter of great importance to preserve the world limited groundwater resources. For this purpose, in this thesis numerical simulation is used. Another purpose of this thesis can be named as using a complicated numerical model in order to simulate simultaneous distribution of NAPLs and pollutant plume caused by partial dissolved petroleum-based contaminant in groundwater. Extensive sensitivity analysis conducted and the results have shown considerable degree of sensitivity of non-aqueous and petroleum transport to changes in factors such as hydraulic conductivity, hydraulic gradient, porosity and the width of unsaturated layer in the contaminated site. As a result, in order to have an accurate modeling, it is imperative to conduct detailed site characterization tests.
