  7. Abstract:
  8. Considering ever expanding applications of embedded systems in all aspects of human life, reliability and fault tolerance of these systems have become vital. To increase the reliability in a microprocessor as the most critical component of an embedded system, one may notice the essential role that is offered by its register bank. In fact the register bank is the most critical subcomponent of an embedded system, greatly affecting the reliability of the overall system. The operation of the embedded system is further critically affected through optimal and efficient usage of power as most systems relay on battery. In this project, to evaluate the availability of register banks various benchmarks within MIBENCH package were applied. The results indicated that registers in the first half of register bank were utilized most often and thereby were more prone to faults. Hence it was decided to implement effective fault tolerant methods in order to not only achieve a more robust register bank but also one that uses less power and less area of occupancy. In the next step, the register bank was divided into three groups and based on their availability, "TMR", "Hamming code" and "parity per byte and word" fault tolerant methods were applied. Furthermore to evaluate the power consumption, the Synopsys Power Compiler utility was utilized. The results indicate that our proposed approach produced a power consumption overhead of 27.6%, positively affected by two-part clock gating approach. Furthermore the area of occupancy overhead was measured at 58%. In conclusion, our results produced a suitable fault tolerant register bank
