  7. Abstract:
  8. Energy constraint is the most critical problem in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). To address this issue, clustering has been introduced as an efficient way for data aggregation and routing. However, there also exist some disadvantages associated with the clustering scheme, such as additional overheads during the cluster-head election and cluster formation process. Most available clustering algorithms do not efficiently take into consideration the geographical information of nodes in the cluster-head election. This leads to uneven distribution of cluster-heads and unbalanced cluster sizes, which brings about uneven energy dissipation in clusters. In this research, an Efficient Distributed Cluster-head Election technique for Load balancing (EDCEL) is proposed. In this method, cluster-heads are evenly distributed over the sensor area. Dispersal of cluster-heads is achieved by increasing the distance between them. To do this some tokens representing the role of cluster-heads are distributed amongst sensor nodes initially, the possessing nodes of which are candidates of being cluster-heads. The tokens are considered to have repulsion forces on each other similar to electrical particles. Hence, tokens can move from one node to another through the network based on the forces exerted on them by other tokens. Increasing distance between cluster-heads avoids a situation in which all cluster-heads are placed in a part of the network. Such situation has the drawbacks of unbalanced cluster sizes and unbalanced energy dissipation. The proposed method considers energy of nodes in the cluster-head election such that cluster-heads are selected form nodes with essential residual energy to act as a cluster-head in a round
