  7. Abstract:
  8. The most common type of polymer based composite friction materials are usually in vehicles as the brake pads are used and must characteristics such as high wear resistance, low weight, durability, low noise and stable friction coefficient. Polymer matrix, in addition to providing other material suitable for storage, the final properties, including mechanical properties, heat, friction and wear is also effective. Thermoset resin polymer matrixes (usually phenolic resin) are used in the brake pads which used for automotive and in some cases, rubber particles as powder formulations may be entered, in order to achieve good properties of rubber and resin simultaneously. Nanofillers because of high aspect ratio and contact surface establish unique properties in polymeric matrix. In this work, nanoclay particles in two types, modified and unmodified ones, are used. For further inspection, we split project to two parts. In the first part, influence of nanofillers on properties of matrix (phenolic resin) is examined and in the second part, influence of these filler on mechanical, friction, wear and fade properties of fractional compounds are investigated. To ensure distribution of nanoclay in Phenolic resin and the suitable interaction between polymer and nanoparticle, solution mixing method was used. In the first part, various spectroscopy and analysis tests of physical and mechanical properties of two-component system based on phenolic resin-nanoclay were carried out. In the second part, using phenolic resin processed with nanoclay, and based on reference formulation for brake pad, different lab samples containing different percentage and different types of nanoparticles are prepared and its properties data were analyzed. To examine the effect of nanoparticles distributions on phenolic resin, samples also were prepared by using the method of direct mixing of particles together. In addition to tribological properties, mechanical properties of brake pads such as hardness, compressive, flexural and tensile properties in order to better assess the nanocomposites pads were evaluated. It was observed that the solution mixing method, provide the proper distribution of clay in resin and cause to improve the mechanical properties, especially in samples containing unmodified clay. Also, the drum surface temperature of the brake pads containing nanoparticles significantly decreased
