  7. Abstract:
  8. Superalloys are widely used in aerospace and power industries due to the good performance at high temperatures for examples gas turbines, steam turbines and aircraft components. In addition to the turbines cobalt-base superalloys are used in medical implants such as knee and hip joints. The main strengths of the superalloys are heat-resistant, retaining their high mechanical and chemical properties at high temperatures, high melting temperatures, high corrosion resistance, resistance to thermal fatigue, thermal shock, creep, and erosion. Because of difficult to machine properties of superalloys, grinding is one of the effective methods for machining superalloys. The surface integrity of the final part is crucial in machining processes. In the most usage, having the smoothest possible surface is desired, especially when the fatigue life of a machined part is important. In this research, the investigation of grinding nickel-base superalloy (Inconel 738 low carbon) and cobalt-base superalloy (X-40) has been studied. To run the test in order to general investigation of the grinding parameters, Taguchi design of experiments method is used. Input parameters including wheel speed, depth of cut, type of wheel, workpiece type and output parameters are grinding forces, surface roughness and white layer thickness .For the surface integrity analysis, surface roughness and microstructural changes have been observed in the test samples. White layer thickness is one of the most important factors in microstructural changes. In grinding with diamond the observed thickness of white layer was 3µm and with alumina grinding wheel was 7µm
