Fabrication and Characterization of Phenolic Resin/Glass Fiber/Organoclay Nanocomposites

  8. In this research the effects of addition of clay in phenolic glass fiber reinforced composite has been investigated. Layered clay/phenolic nanocomposite resin systems were first prepared with 0.5, 1.5 and 2.5 wt% of Cloisite Na+ (CN) and Cloisite 30B (CB). After that the suspension was hold in an ultrasonic bath for 30 min in order to enhance nanodispersion of the clay platelet within the resin. The phenolic/clay solution was used to impregnate the glass fabric using the solvent impregnation method. After suspension for 2 days in the room with natural condition, the impregnated fabrics were pre-cured at 135 ˚C in an oven for 3.5 min to obtain B-stage prepregs. Seven layers of prepregs (150 mm × 100 mm) were stacked together inside the mold and composites were compression molded under the pressure of 50 bar and at 150 ˚C for 30 min. A post curing cycle (6 h at 150 ˚C, 2 h at 160 ˚C and 3 h at 180 ˚C) was applied in an oven following curing stage in mold. In order to study the effect of environments, samples (with dimension of 100mm × 15mm × 1mm) were immersed in 4 different solution including distilled water, brine (30gr/100cc NaCl solution), acidic (1 molar HCl) and alkaline (3 molar NaOH). The use of nanoparticle of two types of clay in the phenolic matrix system for fiber reinforced composite were studied. XRD pattern of samples reveals the intercalation structure of clay and good dispersion in phenolic matrix that makes its interlayer spacing increases upon the fabrication. SEM analysis suggest strong matrix-fiber interface. On the other hand, aging in water for 75 days seems to be a harsh condition that mostly attacks to the interface. Adding nanoclay in such system can substantially improve the tensile properties of material above, but has not a specific trend with flexural properties. The Dynamic mechanical properties also improve with adding clay too. The aging effects on both static and dynamic mechanical properties are improving for neat glass fiber composite, but lowering to clay containing samples due to absorbing more moisture by clay in the aging period. Phenolic resin resists well to wet, acidic and saline conditions, but is weak when exposes to alkaline condition
