  7. Abstract:
  8. After the heart-rending earthquake in Bam and its severe losses, the engineering community forced to pay special attention to the seismic vulnerability of traditional structures. Therefore, with the aim of reducing of such devastations to minimum, a multi-phase research project was defined at Sharif University of Technology to study the vulnerability and retrofitting of these structures which the current study is the eighth phase of that series research. In the third and fourth phases of this project, a typical adobe building with dome roof was chosen for study making use of shaking table facilities. The tests included both un-retrofitted and retrofitted states and considerable seismic performance improvement was observed in the latter. In the present study, seismic response of the aforementioned experimental specimens is numerically simulated. ABAQUS software is used for behavior modeling of adobe building and the basic theory for modeling is simplified micro. The present dissertation consists of four major chapters. The literature review of the related studies is summarized in the first chapter. The second chapter is about modeling of a previously-tested adobe wall under lateral load and calibration of the failure mode and force – displacement diagram. The wall calibrated parameters is used in following steps of this study.
In the third chapter, modeling of the aforesaid adobe buildings under earthquake excitation is performed and the results compared to the experimental results. The modeling and calibration of retrofitted adobe building with welded steel mesh and steel rods are presented in chapter four. In the fifth chapter, of the effects of retrofit pattern on the building seismic performance is evaluated
