- Abstract:
- In this research numerical and experimental study of a twin entry radial inflow gas turbine is performed. At first, various models of energy losses are investigated and compared and the most comprehensive combination of these models are selected. Using conservation equations, gas dynamics relations and energy loss models, the one dimensional model of radial inflow turbine is developed.One-dimensional modeling has lower computing cost in compare with two and three- dimensional models, while gives reliable results, Hence it would be the preferred option for turbine preliminary performance prediction. In this study the one dimensional model based on a step by step procedure, for each turbine component from entrance to exit is developed.Due to importance and effect of incidence energy loss in turbine performance;three incidence loss models;NASA incidence energy loss model, Jonsen ncidence energy loss model and modified constant pressure incidence loss model are used in one dimensional modeling and results of them are compared. Comparison shows that using NASA incidence loss model, turbine efficiency and pressure ratio corresponding to maximum efficiency are predicted more than two models and using modified constant pressure incidence loss model, efficiency is predicted lower than two models.Using one dimensional model, turbine performance curves as well as energy losses are predicted. The model results show that, the incidence and blade passage(friction and secondary flow) losses have utmost share in turbine energy losses.Experimental study is performed to determine the performance characteristics of the turbine and measuring energy losses, in the turbocharger laboratory of Sharif University of Technology. For this study a new turbocharger is prepared and installed on the test rig. Three pitot tubes are installed in three different circumferential positions of the turbine volute outlet in order to measure the total pressures and flow angles. The numerical results are verified through the experimental results which show the maximum differences are about 5.3% and 4.8 % for efficiency and mass parameter respectively. The differences could be due to modeling simplifications, uncertainty in the measured quantities and errors of energy loss models which are used in the modeling
