  7. Abstract:
  8. Recently nanodiamond has drawn a vast attention of researchers due to exceptional mechanical properties. However, nanodiamond tendency to aggregation in polymer matrix restricts its reinforcement properties. In this research, novolac phenolic resin nanocomposites reinforced by nanodiamond were prepared by solution blending method and their mechanical properties were investigated. In order to prevent nanodiamond aggregation, ultrasonic treatment was used and nanodiamond surface was modified with acid and amine functional groups. FTIR and TGA were performed in order to investigate nanodiamond surface and confirmation of existence of acid carboxylic and oleylamine (OLA) groups. Produced nanocomposites were investigated by FESEM, tensile and flexural tests and DMA analysis. The results illustrated that mechanical properties of nanocomposites reinforced by carboxylic nanodiamond were significantly improved in comparison with amine nanodiamond and original nanodiamond samples. Tensile modulus and strength in these samples with 1.25% wt of nanodiamond were improved 124.68% and 63.86% respectively. Uniform distribution of modified acid nanodiamond in novolac resin, formation of hydrogen bonds between nanodiamond modified by carboxylic acid and hydroxyl group of novaloc resin and finally existence of a wide interphase around nanoparticles are one of the most important factors in improvement of mechanical properties
